Taxonomy & naming
Amphilius kivuensis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1933, with syntypes deposited at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris. It belongs to the family Amphiliidae, the African loach catfishes, in the subfamily Amphiliinae. Genus Amphilius is large, with dozens of small stream-dwelling species scattered across tropical Africa.
More recent taxonomic work (Skelton & Page, 2025) has proposed moving this species into a new genus as Anoplopterus kivuensis; this article retains the traditional combination Amphilius kivuensis, under which the species is still widely catalogued, including by FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes. The species epithet kivuensis refers to the type locality west of Lake Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, though — as noted below — confirmed records place most of the species' range in different river systems some distance from the lake itself.
Morphology
Amphilius kivuensis is a small, elongate catfish reaching only about 4 in total length, typical of the loach-like body plan shared across the genus: a flattened head and belly, a slender rounded body, and a broad mouth fringed with barbels for feeling over rock surfaces. Like all amphiliids it is naked-skinned — it has no scales at all, only bare skin — which makes it, like loaches and many other scaleless catfishes, notably sensitive to copper-based medications and should be dosed conservatively if treatment is ever needed.
The paired fins are enlarged and the body is adapted for gripping rock in fast current rather than for open swimming, a hallmark of the family. Amphiliids typically carry small spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins; keepers handling any Amphilius should still move the fish in a container rather than a net to avoid snagging fins or spines.
Habitat
The species is known from streams and small rivers with rocky bottoms in central Africa, within the upper Congo (Lualaba) drainage and the Rusizi River system near Lake Tanganyika. The type locality lies west of Lake Kivu at roughly 2,0 ft elevation, but confirmed occurrence records cluster in Lualaba tributaries and the Rusizi/Tanganyika catchment; reports of the species actually within the Kivu basin itself are considered unconfirmed.
Like other rheophilic Amphiliidae, it lives clinging to stone and rubble substrate in flowing, well-oxygenated water rather than in still pools — a fast-water specialist rather than a generalist. Specific water chemistry data (temperature and pH) has not been documented for this species; as an upland-to-mid-elevation African stream fish it likely experiences cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated running water, but this should not be assumed without confirmation.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study is available for Amphilius kivuensis. Based on the well-documented biology of the genus, it is almost certainly a nocturnal benthic micro-predator and omnivore, grazing rock surfaces and foraging in current for aquatic invertebrate larvae, small crustaceans and detritus after dark, in the same manner as other stream-dwelling Amphiliidae.
There is no aquarium-feeding record for this species, since it is not established in the hobby. Any captive individual would be expected to need sinking foods offered after lights-out, given the nocturnal, current-adapted foraging behaviour typical of the genus.
Mating
No description of courtship or spawning behaviour has been published for Amphilius kivuensis. The genus is not known for elaborate courtship displays, and — unlike the bubble-nesting callichthyids or internally fertilising driftwood catfishes — nothing about Amphiliidae reproduction suggests a comparably specialised mating system. Data here is simply sparse.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in the aquarium or, as far as available sources show, closely studied in the wild for this species. Amphilius kivuensis is not part of the aquarium trade, and no husbandry or spawning accounts exist to draw on. It would be inaccurate to assign a specific breeding mode without evidence; this is a case where the honest answer is that reproduction remains unrecorded rather than assumed to follow any particular pattern.
In the aquarium
Amphilius kivuensis is not a hobby fish — it is not traded, and no aquarium-care literature exists for it. Its real facts are worth stating plainly for anyone who might encounter one via scientific collection or a specialist importer: it tops out at a modest 4 in, so it is not subject to the outgrowing-the-tank size trap that catches many larger catfish, but its scaleless skin makes it, like loaches and other naked-skinned catfish, sensitive to copper and many medications — any treatment should be dosed conservatively.
As a rheophilic species adapted to gripping rock in flowing water, it would need strong current, an oxygen-rich setup and a rocky substrate to have any chance of thriving, conditions closer to a hillstream-loach tank than a standard community aquarium. Given the total absence of husbandry data, anyone attempting to keep this species would essentially be starting from the genus-level knowledge of Amphiliidae rather than any species-specific guidance.
Conservation
Amphilius kivuensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). As a narrow-range stream specialist restricted to specific river systems in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania, it shares the vulnerability typical of small-range African stream fishes — sensitive to siltation, deforestation and changes in water flow within its home catchments — but no formal assessment has quantified the threat level.
Because it is not collected for the aquarium trade, its main conservation exposure would come from habitat pressure in the upper Congo and Rusizi/Tanganyika catchments rather than from over-collection.
