Taxonomy & naming
Anadoras grypus was described by the American palaeontologist and naturalist Edward Drinker Cope in 1872, from material collected in the upper Amazon basin. Like many South American catfishes described in the nineteenth century, it has travelled through several genus placements over the decades as the family Doradidae — the thorny or talking catfishes — was progressively revised; older literature and some aquarium references may still turn up the species under an earlier combination. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the currently valid combination, Anadoras grypus, within the family Doradidae.
The genus name Anadoras is built on Doras, the old "thorny catfish" genus name that gave the family Doradidae its name, with the prefix likely signalling a related but distinct lineage. The species epithet grypus is Latin/Greek for "hook-nosed" or "curved", almost certainly a reference to the shape of the head or snout in the type material.
Morphology
Anadoras grypus has the unmistakable build of a doradid: a heavy, laterally compressed body clad not in true scales but in a row of bony, keeled plates (scutes) running along the flanks, giving the fish a genuinely armoured, thorny profile rather than a smooth one. The dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a stout, serrated spine that the fish can lock rigidly erect, a defence that makes it awkward prey for a predator and equally awkward for an aquarist reaching in with a net.
Colouration is a subdued grey-brown to olive, typical of a fish that relies on camouflage and nocturnal habits rather than display. Reported maximum size is 5.5–6 in (standard length), which is small for the thorny catfish family as a whole — many of its relatives grow far larger — but it is still a full-grown adult fish, not a permanently miniature one, and should be planned for accordingly.
Habitat
The species is native to the upper Amazon basin, with records from Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Bolivia; the type locality is given as small streams tributary to the Ambyiacu River, near Pebas in the eastern Amazon lowlands. It inhabits slow-flowing forest streams and river-margin habitats typical of the region, generally staying low in the water column and close to cover during the day.
Water in these habitats is warm and only mildly acidic to near-neutral rather than the extreme blackwater conditions associated with some other Amazonian fish. FishBase and hobby sources give a temperature range of roughly 72–79 °F and a pH around 6.2–7.2, which should be treated as the working target range for the aquarium rather than assumed to be a soft blackwater extreme.
Feeding
Anadoras grypus is a nocturnal benthic omnivore. In the wild it forages over the bottom after dark for aquatic invertebrates, detritus and small prey, and hobby accounts note that it will take small fish and snails opportunistically, especially at night.
In the aquarium it accepts sinking tablet and pellet foods along with frozen and live foods such as bloodworm and other worms, and it readily eats snails, which makes it a useful (if unpredictable) addition where snail populations need thinning. Because it feeds mainly after lights-out, food is best offered in the evening or after the tank has darkened so this retiring fish is not out-competed by more active, diurnal tankmates.
Mating
Detailed accounts of courtship in Anadoras grypus are sparse, but the species is reported to be a bubble-nester, a breeding strategy shared with a number of other doradid and callichthyid catfishes. In this mode a male constructs a raft of mucus-bound bubbles at the surface, typically anchored under a floating leaf or other cover, and pairing/spawning behaviour leads to eggs being deposited into the nest rather than scattered freely over open substrate.
Specific triggers and pairing behaviour for this species are not well documented in the available literature, and aquarists should treat any attempt as exploratory: soft, slightly acidic to neutral, warm water and dense surface cover (floating plants or leaf litter) are the conditions most likely to encourage nesting behaviour based on what is known of bubble-nesting catfishes generally.
Breeding
Because Anadoras grypus is reported as a bubble-nest builder rather than an open-water egg-scatterer, it stands out among thorny catfishes as one of the more plausible home-breeding prospects in a family where captive breeding is otherwise rare or essentially unrecorded. As in other bubble-nesting catfishes, the male is expected to take the guarding role around the nest once eggs are laid, though detailed observations of parental behaviour in this particular species have not been documented in the sources available here.
Aquarium breeding reports for this species are limited, and data on spawning frequency, fry-rearing and grow-out are sparse. Prospective breeders should treat this as an underdocumented but promising species rather than a routine, reliably reproducible one, and record and share any successful spawns given how little is published.
In the aquarium
Adult Anadoras grypus reaches about 6 in, a manageable size, but it should still be housed in a tank scaled to a full-grown armoured catfish rather than the smaller sizes sometimes reported from young aquarium stock — a common size trap with catfish is assuming a juvenile's dimensions are the adult's. A tank of 25 US gal or more, per hobby guidance, with a soft sand or fine gravel bottom, plenty of cover (wood, caves, dense planting) and subdued lighting suits its retiring, nocturnal habits well.
Because it lacks true scales and is armoured instead with bony plates, it is medication-sensitive in the same way as other scaleless and plated catfishes — dose copper-based and other treatments conservatively. It carries stiff, locking dorsal and pectoral spines that can snag in aquarium nets and jab an unwary hand, so it is safer to coax it into a container than to net it directly. Keep water in the 72–79 °F, pH 6.2–7.2 range reported for the species, provide daytime hiding places, and expect this catfish to become most active only after the lights go out.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Anadoras grypus as Least Concern. FishBase and the IUCN assessment both describe it as widely distributed across the upper Amazon basin (Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Bolivia), locally abundant, without major identified threats, and occurring within protected areas across parts of its range.
As with many Amazon basin fishes, ongoing habitat pressures across the region — deforestation, water-quality changes and localised collection for the aquarium trade — are the long-term factors worth watching even though the species is not currently considered at risk.
