Jupiaba asymmetrica was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908 as Astyanax asymmetricus, with its type locality in the Tabatinga area of the upper Amazon in what is now north-western Brazil. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Jupiaba, where Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises it as a valid species under the combination Jupiaba asymmetrica (Eigenmann, 1908), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the genus change.
The genus Jupiaba is a member of the family Acestrorhamphidae in the broad sense, a clade of characiform fishes. Jupiaba itself takes its name from an indigenous Brazilian word, grounding the genus in the Amazonian cultures of its range. The species name asymmetrica — or in its original form, asymmetricus — is a direct Latinate reference to the asymmetrically positioned caudal spot that distinguishes the species at a glance; this mark is triangular in form and sits off-centre at the base of the caudal fin.
Morphology
Jupiaba asymmetrica is a slender, small-bodied characid reaching a maximum of around 2 in standard length (approximately 3 in total length), making it one of the smaller members of its genus. The species tolerates warm tropical temperatures across its broad range. Its small size — under 2 in SL — and the typical tetra body plan make it compatible with other small, peaceful community fish, and it would do well in a biotope aquarium representing the upper Amazon or its Peruvian and Colombian tributaries.
A tank of 15–20 US gal suits a small group; like most tetras it is a shoaling fish and does best kept in groups of six or more rather than in pairs or trios. Soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water at tropical temperatures (75–82 °F) in line with its upper Amazonian origin would be appropriate, with subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and the addition of dried leaf litter or floating plants to recreate the tannin-stained microhabitat of Amazonian stream margins. Tankmates of similar size and temperament — small rasboras, other small tetras, pygmy corydoras — are suitable companions.

The Least Concern designation reflects the species' broad range across the upper Amazon basin in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru — a large, largely intact, and still-forested watershed — and the absence of documented population-level threats sufficient to trigger a threatened category.
The upper Amazon basin, while under increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development in parts, retains large areas of primary and secondary forest across the four countries in which this species occurs. The species' small size and suspected ability to utilise a range of stream microhabitats likely contribute to its resilience.
