Auchenipterus brevior is a small driftwood catfish known only from the Potaro River basin of Guyana, a naked-skinned, big-eyed midwater hunter that spends its nights foraging over the water column rather than hugging the bottom like most catfish. It belongs to the Auchenipteridae, a South American family famous for a reproductive trick almost unheard of among catfish: internal fertilisation, with males passing sperm to females who store it and lay fertile eggs later on their own schedule.

Taxonomy & naming

Auchenipterus brevior was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912. It sits in the genus Auchenipterus, within the family Auchenipteridae — the driftwood catfishes — a South American group historically confused with, and sometimes classified alongside, other naked catfish lineages before modern revisions separated it out. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Auchenipterus brevior as the valid combination, and it should not be shuffled into an older genus.

The genus name Auchenipterus derives from Greek roots referring to the neck/nape region and a fin, alluding to the position of the dorsal fin on these slender-bodied catfish. The epithet brevior is Latin for "shorter", a comparative term the describer likely applied relative to a similar congener, reflecting this species' comparatively short or compact body proportions. Because Auchenipteridae taxonomy has been revised repeatedly, hobbyist and older literature sources occasionally misattribute driftwood cats to neighbouring genera; the genus used here, Auchenipterus, is the currently accepted one.

Morphology

Auchenipterus brevior is a small catfish, reaching only about 3.5 in standard length, well within the modest size range typical of the genus. Like other driftwood cats it has an elongated, laterally compact body, a forked tail, and relatively large eyes suited to low-light and midwater foraging rather than the eyes of a strict bottom-grubber. As in virtually all catfishes its skin is scaleless (naked), which matters directly for medication dosing (see "In the aquarium").

Driftwood catfishes typically carry stiff, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines that can lock erect — a defence against predators that also poses a real hazard to keepers, since the spines readily snag in aquarium nets and can jab bare skin. Sexually mature males of this family additionally show a modified anal fin used in mating (see "Mating"), a feature that can help distinguish the sexes in breeding-condition fish.

Habitat

This species is known from the Potaro River basin in Guyana, part of the Essequibo drainage in the Guiana Shield region of northern South America. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical lowland rivers, meaning it ranges through the water column rather than staying pinned to the substrate, consistent with the open-water, schooling habits typical of driftwood catfishes.

Detailed water-chemistry data for this specific population is sparse in the available literature. Guiana Shield rivers such as the Potaro are broadly characterised by warm, tropical conditions, and aquarists should default to soft, slightly acidic to neutral water typical of the region unless more specific data becomes available, rather than assuming any particular extreme.

Feeding

Auchenipterus brevior has a trophic level around 3.3 on FishBase, indicating an omnivorous micro-predator diet rather than a specialised herbivore or piscivore. In the wild it most likely forages after dark over open water and near cover for small invertebrates, insect larvae, and other suitably sized prey items, in keeping with the largely nocturnal, benthic-to-midwater foraging pattern typical of driftwood cats.

In the aquarium, catfish of this type generally accept sinking pellets along with frozen and prepared foods once acclimated. Because natural foraging peaks after dark, offering food after lights-out helps ensure a shy, nocturnal species like this is not out-competed by more assertive, day-active tankmates.

Mating

Auchenipteridae — the driftwood catfish family that includes Auchenipterus — is one of the very few catfish groups with internal fertilisation, and this is the defining fact of its reproduction. In mature males the first ray of the anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ used to transfer sperm directly to the female during mating, rather than releasing milt over a scattered clutch of eggs as most catfish do.

Following copulation, the female stores the sperm internally, in some cases for months, before using it to fertilise and lay eggs on her own timetable — decoupling mating from spawning in a way that is rare among catfishes generally. Documented eggs in the family are relatively large, on the order of 0.5 in in diameter, and the female deposits them in a hiding place some days after fertilisation rather than broadcasting them into open water.

Breeding

Reflecting the family's internal-fertilisation strategy, breeding in Auchenipterus brevior does not follow the open-water egg-scattering pattern common to many other catfish. After internal mating and a period of sperm storage, the female lays her fertilised eggs in a sheltered spot; in related, better-studied Auchenipteridae the female then guards the eggs for several days until they hatch, though continuous care after that point is generally limited.

This reproductive mode makes driftwood catfishes an interesting exception among the family Siluriformes, but it also means they are rarely bred deliberately in home aquaria — successful captive spawns depend on unpredictable internal fertilisation events that are difficult for a keeper to engineer or observe. Data on captive breeding specifically for Auchenipterus brevior is sparse; assume it is not a species reliably bred in the hobby.

In the aquarium

At a modest maximum size of about 3.5 in SL, Auchenipterus brevior is one of the smaller driftwood catfishes and can be housed in a moderately sized aquarium, but as with any catfish it should be given secure cover and not treated as an afterthought scavenger. It is a naked-skinned (scaleless) fish, so it is more sensitive than scaled species to copper-based medications and many other treatments; dose conservatively, often at reduced strength, and remove copper-based medication before it becomes necessary to treat other tankmates aggressively.

Like most catfish it likely carries locking, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines that can snag in a net and jab bare skin — move it in a container rather than netting it directly. Being nocturnal and midwater-oriented, it appreciates driftwood, plant cover, or shaded areas to retreat to during the day, and is best fed after lights-out. Specific husbandry records for this exact species are limited, so err toward stable, soft-to-neutral tropical water and gentle, community-safe tankmates sized appropriately for an 3–3.5 in fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Auchenipterus brevior as Least Concern, with an assessment dated September 2020. This reflects its status within its known Guiana Shield range rather than necessarily indicating detailed population monitoring; many Guiana Shield freshwater fishes benefit from comparatively intact, sparsely developed river systems relative to more heavily impacted parts of South America.

As with many small, range-restricted tropical catfishes, ongoing habitat pressures in Guyana such as mining, deforestation and water-quality changes in the Potaro basin are the kind of long-term risk factors relevant to a species like this, even where the current formal assessment is not elevated. There is no indication in available sources that the aquarium trade drives meaningful collection pressure on this species.
