Taxonomy & naming
Auchenipterus demerarae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912. It belongs to the family Auchenipteridae — the driftwood catfishes — within the order Siluriformes, and to the genus Auchenipterus, one of the family's namesake genera. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the governing authority for valid fish names, recognises Auchenipterus demerarae in this combination.
The species epithet demerarae refers to the Demerara River in Guyana, part of the type locality from which Eigenmann's specimens were collected. Auchenipteridae has been heavily revised over the past century, with many species shuffled between genera such as Auchenipterus, Trachelyopterus and Tatia as relationships were reworked; demerarae has remained in Auchenipterus through these revisions.
Morphology
Auchenipterus demerarae is a slim, laterally compressed catfish with a small head, an upturned mouth and short barbels — a build shared across the genus and suited to feeding in midwater and at the surface as well as on the bottom. Like all catfishes in this family it is scaleless, with naked, smooth skin rather than the bony plating seen in armoured groups like the corydoradine cories or plecos.
Adults reach about 5 in standard length, a modest size for the family but still a fish that needs real swimming room, not a nano tank. The dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff spines that can be locked erect; as with most catfishes these can snag in a net, so the fish is best moved in a container rather than netted. Its scaleless skin also means it is more sensitive than scaled fishes to copper-based medications and should be dosed conservatively.
Habitat
The species is native to South America, recorded from the Demerara, Essequibo, Rupununi and Cuyuni river basins of Guyana and the wider Guiana Shield drainages. These are warm, tropical freshwater systems typical of the region's lowland rivers and their tributaries.
Specific published water chemistry for this species is sparse, but as a Guiana Shield river fish it can be kept in the warm, soft-to-neutral water typical of the region rather than the harder, alkaline conditions of African rift lakes or the brackish tolerances of some other catfish groups. A well-filtered river-style setup with moderate flow and driftwood or submerged wood for cover suits its natural habitat and its family's common name.
Feeding
Auchenipterus demerarae is a nocturnal benthic omnivore, foraging mainly after dark for aquatic invertebrates, small crustaceans and organic detritus, with some opportunistic feeding on smaller prey. This matches the general pattern for driftwood cats, which forage low in the water column and near cover once light fades.
In the aquarium it takes sinking pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, and other prepared foods readily once settled. Because it is most active at night, offering food after the lights go out helps ensure it feeds properly rather than being out-competed by diurnal tankmates.
Mating
Auchenipterus demerarae shares the defining reproductive trait of its family: internal fertilisation, one of the few genuinely unusual breeding strategies among catfishes. In male Auchenipteridae the anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ used to transfer sperm directly to the female during mating, rather than the male fertilising eggs externally after the female releases them.
Following mating, the female is able to store sperm and does not necessarily spawn immediately — she can lay a fertile clutch of eggs some time after pairing. This is documented for the family in phylogenetic studies of Auchenipteridae reproductive anatomy and is treated as characteristic of the group as a whole, including Auchenipterus.
Breeding
Because fertilisation is internal and sperm storage lets a female spawn well after mating, driftwood cats like Auchenipterus demerarae do not fit the open-water egg-scattering pattern seen in many other catfishes, and there is no evidence of nest-building or parental guarding of eggs or fry in this species.
Detailed accounts of captive breeding for Auchenipterus demerarae specifically are not established in the available literature — data sparse. As with many wild-collected South American driftwood cats, most individuals in the trade are not bred in home aquaria, and hobbyists should not expect to reproduce this species reliably without further documented technique.
In the aquarium
Auchenipterus demerarae reaches about 5 in SL, a fish that needs a properly sized aquarium with open swimming space rather than a small tank — the size trap of assuming a driftwood cat stays tiny should be avoided. Its scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and many general treatments, so dose conservatively, often at half the labelled rate, and remove it before treating tankmates with copper.
It carries locking dorsal and pectoral spines that can tangle in aquarium nets and jab the handler, so move it by container rather than netting it directly. As a nocturnal species it appreciates driftwood, dim cover and subdued lighting during the day, becoming more active once lights go down; feeding after dark ensures it gets its share. It is a peaceful community fish for tankmates too large to be eaten, in keeping with river-community setups from the Guiana Shield.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Auchenipterus demerarae as Least Concern. It occupies a reasonably wide range of river basins across Guyana's Guiana Shield drainages, and there is no indication of significant population decline.
As with many lesser-known South American catfishes, formal population monitoring is limited, and its conservation status should be understood as reflecting broad range and lack of known threats rather than intensive study. General pressures on Guiana Shield rivers — habitat disturbance, mining runoff and deforestation in parts of the region — are the broader concerns for the river systems it inhabits, even though the species itself is not currently flagged as threatened.
