Taxonomy & naming
Bagrus meridionalis was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1894. It belongs to the family Bagridae, the Old World bagrid catfishes, a family that spans both Africa (Bagrus, Chrysichthys, Auchenoglanis) and Asia (Mystus, Hemibagrus, Sperata) and has been repeatedly reshuffled as the Catalog of Fishes revises Siluriformes. Bagrus meridionalis remains the currently valid combination and the genus Bagrus is not in question for this species.
The genus name Bagrus derives from an old vernacular name for large African catfishes; the specific epithet meridionalis is Latin for "southern", reflecting the species' range at the southern end of the East African Rift lake system relative to its northern Bagrus relatives. The vernacular "kampango" is the name used around Lake Malawi and is widely adopted in the aquarium trade and fisheries literature alike.
Morphology
The kampango has the classic bagrid silhouette: a broad, flattened head, a long, cylindrical body, an adipose fin, and long, whisker-like barbels used to feel out prey and obstacles in low light. Like nearly all catfishes it is scaleless, with a naked, mucus-covered skin rather than scaled armour — a detail that matters directly for medication dosing (see "In the aquarium").
Maximum recorded size is about 59 in SL, though common adults run closer to 16.5 in TL with maturity reached around 17.5 in — still a very large fish by any aquarium standard, and one that keeps growing well past typical juvenile trade size. The dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff, serrated spines that lock erect; these can jam in a net and jab a careless handler, so large individuals are best moved in a container rather than netted.
Habitat
Bagrus meridionalis is endemic to Lake Malawi, Lake Malombe and the upper Shire River in southern-central Africa (roughly 9°S–15°S), a range it does not share with any other Bagrus species. It is a demersal fish of the lake floor and rocky littoral, recorded from the surface down to about 197 ft, and by day it typically shelters in burrows or rock crevices rather than roaming in the open.
Lake Malawi water is warm and mildly alkaline: FishBase gives a temperature range of roughly 73–82 °F and pH 7.5–8.2, consistent with the hard, mineral-buffered water typical of the African Rift lakes. This is not a soft, acidic blackwater species — it belongs to the same mineral-rich water chemistry that suits Malawi's mbuna and haplochromine cichlids.
Feeding
The kampango is a large nocturnal piscivore. Its primary prey in the wild is the small demersal cichlids that crowd Lake Malawi's rocky shoreline, which it hunts mainly at dusk and after dark using its barbels to locate prey in low light; it will take essentially any fish or invertebrate small enough to swallow. Juveniles supplement this diet with trophic (unfertilized) eggs from the guarding mother and with invertebrates brought to the nest by the male (see "Breeding").
In the aquarium or pond setting it is an easy feeder, accepting large meaty foods such as whole fish, prawn and sinking pellets without hesitation. The practical consequence is unavoidable: any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth will eventually be eaten, so companions must be robust, large-bodied fish that the kampango cannot swallow.
Mating
Kampango spawn on a sandy bottom near rocky cover, building a shallow nest rather than scattering eggs into open water. Spawning is seasonal, concentrated in the January–March wet season, when a female lays several thousand eggs into the prepared nest.
Unusually for a large predatory catfish, Bagrus meridionalis shows genuine bi-parental care: both the female and male stay with the nest and brood rather than abandoning the eggs, a behaviour documented in the academic literature on the species' reproductive biology. This sets it apart from most large commercial catfish, which typically show little or no guarding once eggs are laid.
Breeding
In the wild, kampango pairs guard their nest and young closely: after hatching, fry feed on unfertilized trophic eggs produced by the mother and on invertebrates delivered by the father, an investment of parental care that is well above average for a bagrid catfish. This is a genuinely interesting breeding biology — but it is not something the home aquarist will ever see.
Because this species grows to roughly 59 in SL and lives for many years, it is not bred in home aquaria under any circumstances. Where it is propagated at all — for fisheries restocking or aquaculture — it is through hormone-induced commercial spawning of large broodstock in ponds or tanks, not natural pairing in a display aquarium. Anyone encountering kampango fry in the trade should assume they originate from wild collection or commercial hatchery production, never a hobbyist breeding project.
In the aquarium
The kampango is a size-trap species in the fullest sense: it is often sold as an inexpensive, attractive juvenile a few centimetres long, but it is capable of reaching around 59 in SL, with even ordinary adults settling in the 40+ cm range. ScotCat's factsheet puts a realistic minimum tank at roughly 1,35 US gal — a size well beyond almost every home setup — and the fish keeps growing for years after that. This is fundamentally a public-aquarium, large-pond, or dedicated giant-fish-keeper species, not a community or even a typical large-cichlid tank resident.
For anyone equipped to house it, husbandry follows directly from its biology. Provide caves, burrows, or rockwork for daytime shelter, since it rests by day and hunts mainly at dusk and after dark; feed accordingly with large meaty items, and expect it to eat anything smaller than itself. As a scaleless catfish it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many standard treatments, so dose conservatively. The stiff, locking dorsal and pectoral spines catch in nets and can injure a handler, so always move a kampango in a container rather than a net. In the wild it is reported to live in a cleaning symbiosis with the small mbuna Pseudotropheus crabro, which picks fish lice and other parasites from its skin — a detail worth knowing but not something to expect from an unrelated tankmate in captivity.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bagrus meridionalis as Critically Endangered. The assessment cites a population decline of more than 90% between 2006 and 2016, based on fishery catch rate data from southern Lake Malawi — a collapse driven by heavy fishing pressure on a large, slow-growing, long-lived predator that was historically an important commercial and subsistence catch around the lake.
Because the species is restricted to Lake Malawi, Lake Malombe and the upper Shire River, its entire global population is exposed to the same regional fishing pressure with no other refuge population to buffer the decline. Any kampango encountered in the aquarium trade should be assumed to be wild-collected from an already severely depleted population, which is a further reason this is not a species to take on casually.
