Synodontis njassae is a small, nocturnal mochokid catfish endemic to Lake Malawi, one of the great East African rift lakes. Reaching around 4.5–5 in standard length, it occupies the rocky and sandy littoral margins of Malawi as a benthic forager, keeping company with the lake's celebrated mbuna cichlids without sharing their brood-parasitic trick. Relatively uncommon in the hobby compared to better-known rift-lake squeakers, it is a modest but appealing find for the dedicated Malawi aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Synodontis njassae was described by the German zoologist L. Keilhack in 1908, based on material from Lake Nyasa — the colonial-era name for what is now Lake Malawi. The species belongs to the family Mochokidae, the African squeakers, and to the large genus Synodontis, which encompasses well over a hundred species distributed across tropical Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Synodontis njassae as the valid binomial under the combination first established by Keilhack.

The species epithet njassae is a latinised genitive of Nyasa, the former English name of Lake Malawi derived from the Yao word for "lake" or "large water." The name therefore means "of Nyasa" — of the lake — anchoring the species firmly to its sole known range. Lake Malawi holds a small suite of Synodontis, of which njassae is the most frequently encountered in the literature, though the lake's squeaker fauna remains less thoroughly studied than that of Lake Tanganyika.

Morphology

Synodontis njassae shows the typical mochokid body plan: a broad, depressed head, stout forebody, and three pairs of barbels — one long maxillary pair and two shorter, branched mandibular pairs. The dorsal and pectoral fins are each armed with a stiff, serrated, locking spine. Like all Synodontis, the skin is entirely scaleless (naked), a trait with direct implications for medication sensitivity.

Adult size is approximately 4.5–5 in standard length (SL), placing it in the small-to-medium range for the genus. The body colouration is reported as a pale to brownish grey with darker markings, though detailed pattern descriptions in the available literature are sparse. The caudal fin is forked, the adipose fin is prominent, and the overall profile is compact and muscular — typical of a fish that wedges into rocky crevices by day and forages over the substrate at night.

Habitat

Synodontis njassae is an endemic of Lake Malawi, the southernmost of the three great East African rift lakes and one of the most species-rich bodies of freshwater in the world. The lake straddles Malawi, Tanzania, and Mozambique, and supports hundreds of endemic cichlid species. S. njassae occupies the littoral zone — the rocky and sandy shallows along the lake margins — where it shelters in crevices and rubble during daylight hours.

Despite being a rift-lake fish, the water chemistry of Lake Malawi differs from Tanganyika: it is warm (roughly 72–79 °F), moderately hard, and circumneutral to slightly alkaline, with pH values generally in the range of about 6.5–7.5 near the margins depending on the site and season. This is softer and less alkaline than Lake Tanganyika, and aquarists should not conflate the two lakes' chemistry when setting up a Malawi aquarium.

Feeding

Synodontis njassae is a benthic omnivore in the mochokid mould, foraging after dark over rocky and sandy substrates for aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and any organic matter it encounters. Some algal and plant material is likely taken opportunistically. It is a scavenger and opportunist rather than a specialist predator.

In the aquarium it is undemanding and accepts sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and prepared catfish wafers without difficulty. Because it is primarily nocturnal, feeding after lights-out ensures it competes effectively in a community tank. Live or frozen invertebrate foods are relished but not required.

Mating

Detailed observations of mating in Synodontis njassae in either the wild or captivity are sparse in the available literature. Like the majority of Synodontis outside the famous cuckoo-catfish S. multipunctatus, njassae is not a brood parasite: it does not deposit its eggs in the mouths of mouthbrooding cichlids. Instead, reproductive behaviour is consistent with the typical squeaker pattern of adhesive eggs scattered in rocky crevices or over the substrate.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Mature females are likely somewhat fuller-bodied than males during the breeding season, as is common across the genus, but no reliable external characters are described in the available sources for this species. A well-conditioned group kept under appropriate conditions is the practical starting point for anyone hoping to observe spawning.

Breeding

Synodontis njassae is rarely if ever bred in the home aquarium. Like most squeakers outside S. multipunctatus and a handful of related brood-parasites, it has no strong captive-breeding record, and no dedicated account of successful home reproduction could be found in the available sources. Commercial supply, where it exists, is derived from wild collection.

The inferred breeding mode — adhesive eggs scattered in crevices with little or no parental care — is consistent with other non-cuckoo Synodontis, but this has not been documented in detail for njassae specifically. Aquarists with a group and suitable rocky habitat who observe spawning behaviour should note that the fry, if produced, would need fine live foods (infusoria, micro-worm) in the early stages. Data on this species' reproduction remain sparse.

In the aquarium

Synodontis njassae suits an aquarium designed around Lake Malawi's biotope: warm water at 72–79 °F, moderate hardness, and a pH of roughly 6.5–7.5, with plenty of rockwork and caves where the fish can retreat during the day. It is naturally a companion of Malawi cichlids and fits a mixed mbuna or haplochromine tank without difficulty, provided tankmates are not so small as to be eaten at night.

As a scaleless mochokid, S. njassae shares the medication sensitivity common to all naked-skinned catfishes — copper-based treatments and many standard remedies should be used at half the normal dose or avoided entirely, as the unprotected skin absorbs them more readily than scaled fish. The locking pectoral and dorsal spines are stiff and serrated; they tangle dangerously in a net and can puncture the hand of an unwary keeper. Always move this fish in a container rather than a net.

The adult size of around 4.5–5 in SL is manageable, making S. njassae suitable for medium-sized Malawi set-ups. It is nocturnal and shy by day, so adequate hiding places are essential for the fish's comfort and to reduce stress. A group of three or more is preferable to a singleton, and the species is peaceful toward fish too large to be swallowed.

Conservation

Synodontis njassae has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and currently holds a status of Not Evaluated (NE). As an endemic restricted entirely to Lake Malawi, its long-term fate is tied to the health of the lake itself. Lake Malawi faces growing pressures from overfishing, sedimentation from deforestation of its catchment, agricultural run-off, and the cascading effects of climate-driven changes to the lake's thermal and chemical stratification.

The species is not prominent in the international aquarium trade and is described as relatively uncommon in the hobby, which limits both collection pressure and the data available on wild population trends. Any future IUCN assessment would need to account for the species' apparent restriction to the littoral zone — a habitat that, while extensive across Malawi's shoreline, is among the most directly affected by nearshore human activity.
