Taxonomy & naming
Batasio batasio was described by Francis Hamilton (later Hamilton-Buchanan) in 1822 in his monumental account of the fishes of the Ganges, under the original combination Pimelodus batasio. It was subsequently moved through several genera before the name Batasio was established as the valid genus for this group of small South Asian bagrids; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Batasio batasio as the valid combination.
The family Bagridae is a large, largely Asian assemblage of catfishes whose higher classification has been revised repeatedly; Batasio is placed within Bagridae and is closely related to Mystus and allied genera but is consistently separated on the basis of its smaller adult size and cranial characters. The genus holds roughly a dozen recognised species, all confined to the river systems of the Indian subcontinent and adjacent drainages. No subspecies of B. batasio are currently recognised.
Morphology
Batasio batasio has the typical bagrid form: a moderately compressed body, a broad, somewhat flattened head, and a moderately forked tail. Three pairs of barbels are present — one long maxillary pair reaching well past the pectoral fin base and two shorter mandibular pairs. The adipose fin is long and low, a family characteristic. Colouration is generally a pale brownish or yellowish-grey, sometimes with faint darker mottling; the fins are plain or lightly dusky.
Adult size is reported at up to 6–8 in standard length, though captive specimens often level off at 4.5–7 in; buyers should be aware that this is not a permanently small fish and plan accordingly. Like all bagrids the skin is entirely scaleless — smooth and naked — which carries direct implications for medication sensitivity. The dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff, serrated, locking spines that can lock in the erect position; these spines tangle readily in nets and can deliver a painful jab.
Habitat
The type locality is the Ganges and Brahmaputra river systems of India; the species may also occur in Bangladesh where these drainages reach the sea. It inhabits rivers and their larger tributaries, preferring areas with moderate current, a sand or gravel substrate and abundant submerged structure — undercut banks, woody debris and larger stones — where it can shelter during the day.
Water conditions in these fast-flowing foothill and plains rivers are cool to warm (roughly 72–79 °F), soft to moderately hard and near-neutral in pH (approximately 6.0–7.5). This is not a warm, soft, blackwater fish from the Amazonian or Bornean mould — it comes from the open, seasonally variable rivers of the Indian subcontinent and tolerates a modest range of conditions, but it should not be pushed into persistently warm or highly alkaline water.
Feeding
Batasio batasio is a nocturnal benthic omnivore. In its native rivers it forages along the bottom after dark for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — supplemented by plant and detrital material. Larger individuals may take small fish or fry.
In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of sinking foods readily: quality catfish pellets and wafers, frozen bloodworm, tubifex and brine shrimp, and pieces of prawn. Because it is effectively inactive and hidden during daylight hours, feeding after the tank lights go off ensures it gets adequate nutrition without being out-competed by diurnal tankmates. A varied diet maintains condition and colour.
Mating
The mating biology of Batasio batasio has not been documented in the scientific literature, and hobbyist accounts of captive spawning are absent from the available record. In the broader Bagridae context, many species of similar size are believed to be substrate-spawners or cavity-guarders — the male defending eggs deposited in a sheltered site — rather than open-water egg-scatterers, but this has not been confirmed for Batasio.
Sexual dimorphism, if present, has not been formally described; in related small bagrids, ripe females are typically fuller-bodied than males of comparable length. Conditioning a group on a varied live and frozen diet while providing caves and hiding spots is the standard starting point for keepers interested in attempting a spawn.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Batasio batasio has not been reliably documented in the aquarium hobby. No hormone-farming or commercial breeding operation is recorded for this species, and it is not among the small bagrids that have been successfully bred at home with any regularity. Whether it is a cavity-spawner with paternal guarding, a substrate-scatterer with no parental care, or employs some other mode remains unconfirmed from available sources.
Keepers should approach this species as one that is unlikely to breed in a standard home aquarium without specific research into its reproductive requirements. If a spawn is eventually achieved, the safest assumption based on small-bagrid analogues is that eggs are deposited in a sheltered site and may benefit from removing other fish from the tank; but the details await documentation.
In the aquarium
A tank of at least 20–25 US gal suits an adult Batasio batasio; 30 US gal or more is preferable given the potential adult size of 6–8 in SL. The substrate should be fine sand or smooth gravel — the fish rests on and forages through the bottom constantly. Provide caves, sections of PVC pipe, or clusters of smooth rocks for daytime refuge; without cover the fish remains stressed and hidden in corners rather than confidently exploring.
Water should be kept at 72–79 °F with a pH of 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard. A moderate, well-oxygenated current suits the species, reflecting its river origins. Because the skin is entirely scaleless, Batasio batasio is more sensitive to copper-based medications and many other treatments than scaled fish — halve the standard dose and observe carefully, as with loaches and other naked-skinned species. The locking pectoral and dorsal spines mean the fish should never be netted; move it using a container to avoid tangled spines and injury to both fish and keeper. It is generally peaceful toward tankmates too large to swallow, though very small fish and shrimp fry are at risk. Feed after lights-out.
Conservation
Batasio batasio is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. As a Ganges–Brahmaputra endemic, it is subject to the range of pressures affecting these heavily-used river systems: agricultural runoff, sedimentation, water abstraction, and habitat alteration in the floodplain and foothill zones.
The aquarium trade impact on this species appears low; it is rarely seen in the hobby and does not appear to be the subject of significant commercial collection.
