Taxonomy & naming
Ompok pabda was described by the Scottish physician and naturalist Francis Hamilton in 1822 in his survey of the fishes of the Ganges and its tributaries, originally under the genus Silurus. It was later transferred to Ompok — a genus erected to accommodate the Asian sheatfishes, members of the family Siluridae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Ompok pabda (Hamilton, 1822) as the valid name.
The family Siluridae is a widespread Old World catfish family encompassing the giant wels catfish (Silurus glanis) of Europe, the glass catfish (Kryptopterus) of Southeast Asia, and the sheatfishes (Ompok, Wallago) of South and Southeast Asia. Siluridae underwent considerable reclassification through the twentieth century, and earlier literature may place pabda in Callichrous or under the original Silurus combination. The common name "pabda" is the Bengali vernacular for this fish and is widely used in both market and scientific contexts.
Morphology
Ompok pabda has the slender, compressed body and broad, depressed head typical of sheatfishes. It is scaleless — the skin is entirely naked — and the lateral line is prominent. The body colour is generally a pale silvery or yellowish olive, often with faint iridescence, sometimes with a diffuse lateral stripe. Two pairs of barbels are present: a long maxillary pair extending well past the dorsal origin, and a much shorter mental pair on the chin.
Reported maximum size from FishBase is 12 in total length, though many references in aquarium literature cite a more conservative 10 in. The dorsal fin is short and placed far forward; the anal fin is very long, running most of the body length to the tail — a characteristic siluriform shape shared with relatives. The pectoral spine is serrated on its inner edge and can be locked in an erect position. The complete absence of scales, combined with a locking spine, are the two most important care points for aquarists handling this species.
Habitat
The pabda catfish is a freshwater species of the lowland river systems, tributary streams, ponds, beels (oxbow lakes), seasonal pools and inundated fields of South Asia. Its native range spans Bangladesh, India (particularly the Ganges and Brahmaputra drainages), Myanmar, and extends west into Pakistan and Afghanistan. The type locality is Bengal.
In the wild it occupies a broad range of standing and flowing freshwater habitats, showing considerable tolerance for turbid, lowland conditions typical of floodplain environments. Water parameters from Scotcat and BdFISH records indicate temperatures of 70–81 °F and pH from 6.0 to 7.0 — soft to neutral, warm, lowland river water typical of the northern Indian subcontinent. It is not a blackwater specialist and is naturally found in productive, nutrient-rich floodplain habitats.
Feeding
Ompok pabda is an omnivorous predator. BdFISH records report a broad diet including algae, plant roots, protozoa, crustaceans, mud and sand ingested while foraging, and small fish. In practice it functions as an opportunistic predator: any live food it can capture and fit into its mouth will be taken, and small fish are a regular prey item in adults.
In the aquarium and in culture, it accepts high-protein sinking foods — earthworms, prawn, mussel flesh, frozen bloodworm, and quality sinking pellets are all reported to be taken well. As a nocturnal and crepuscular feeder it is most active after dark, and food offered in the evening will be found more readily than food added under full lighting. Any tankmate small enough to be swallowed whole is at risk.
Mating
In the wild, Ompok pabda is a seasonal river spawner, with breeding activity concentrated in the monsoon period from May to July when river levels rise and floodplain habitats become available. This seasonal pattern is tied to temperature cues, water level changes and increased food availability that accompany the South Asian monsoon.
The species is not known to form long-term pair bonds or to show territorial nest-building behaviour. Sexing outside of the breeding season is difficult; ripe females become visibly fuller in the abdomen. In aquaculture settings in Bangladesh (notably the hatcheries at Mymensingh and Jessore), induced hormonal spawning using pituitary extracts or synthetic hormone analogues has been practised successfully, enabling large-scale seed production for food fish culture.
Breeding
Home aquarium breeding of Ompok pabda is essentially not documented. The species is a river spawner triggered by the environmental conditions of the monsoon, and replicating those cues — large temperature and water-level shifts, extended conditioning periods — is not practical in a domestic aquarium. There is no record of natural reproduction occurring in hobbyist tanks.
In Bangladesh it is an important aquaculture species, successfully farm-bred through hormonal induction and reared in managed ponds for the food fish market. Aquarists should assume that captive breeding in a home setting is not achievable with current methods; the trade relies on wild-caught juveniles or, increasingly, on hatchery-produced fish from South Asian aquaculture operations.
In the aquarium
Ompok pabda presents two critical challenges that potential keepers must understand before purchase. First, the size trap: juveniles are commonly sold at 3–4.5 in and look manageable, but adults reach 10–12 in total length — a large, active predatory fish that requires a tank of at least 59–78.5 in in length to move and turn comfortably. The majority of home aquaria cannot adequately house an adult pabda catfish long-term.
Second, the species is entirely scaleless — its naked skin is significantly more sensitive to copper-based treatments, organophosphate-based medications and many proprietary parasite remedies than scaled fish. If treatment is necessary, use a half-dose as a starting point and monitor closely; the general rule for scaleless catfish is to proceed conservatively. The serrated, locking pectoral spine can tangle in a fine-mesh net and deliver a painful jab: always move this fish in a solid container, never in a net.
Given the right conditions, pabda can adapt well to captivity. It is shy for its size, strongly nocturnal, and needs adequate cover — caves, broad-leaved plants, driftwood or PVC tubes — to feel secure during daylight hours. Water should be clean, soft to neutral (pH 6.0–7.0), and warm (70–81 °F). Any tankmate small enough to fit in the fish's mouth is a potential meal; robust companions of similar or larger size are appropriate. It is not aggressive toward fish it cannot swallow, but care is required when combining it with smaller species in a community setting.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Ompok pabda as Near Threatened in 2009. The species has experienced significant population declines across its South Asian range, primarily due to overexploitation as a highly prized food fish and the degradation and loss of floodplain habitats through water control projects, floodplain enclosure for agriculture and urban development, and sedimentation from deforestation.
In Bangladesh specifically, pabda is considered endangered at a national level, having become scarce in rivers and beels where it was once common. Successful aquaculture production of the species offers some hope for reducing fishing pressure on wild stocks, but the wild populations in lowland river systems remain at risk. Aquarists sourcing this species should seek out hatchery-reared fish where possible, as these are now available from South Asian suppliers and represent a more sustainable alternative to wild-caught individuals.
