Heteropneustes fossilis, the stinging catfish, is one of South Asia's most tenacious freshwater predators — a scaleless, air-breathing catfish that carries a pair of long, sac-like accessory breathing organs extending back through its body, allowing it to gulp surface air and survive in water so oxygen-depleted and stagnant that most other fish cannot. Native to the floodplains, ponds, rice paddies and sluggish rivers of Bangladesh, India, Myanmar and neighbouring countries, it reaches 23.5 in in nature and brings stiff, venomous-capable pectoral spines to the aquarium — a fish demanding respect and a tank sized for an adult predator, not the small juveniles typically sold.

Taxonomy & naming

Heteropneustes fossilis was originally described by the German naturalist Marcus Elieser Bloch in 1794, initially placed in the broad catch-all genus Silurus alongside European and Asian catfishes of the era. Subsequent revisions removed it to its own monotypic or near-monotypic family, Heteropneustidae, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as distinct from the superficially similar walking catfishes of Clariidae. The genus Heteropneustes is sometimes listed with a second species, H. microps, from peninsular India, though sources disagree on whether that form merits full species rank. The valid combination Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch, 1794) is consistently applied by the Catalog of Fishes.

The species has attracted a long list of junior synonyms accumulated over nearly two and a half centuries of redescription under different genus placements — among them Silurus singio Hamilton, 1822 and Saccobranchus fossilis of many nineteenth-century accounts. The family and genus name alike refer to the distinctive air-sac anatomy: Heteropneustes derives from the Greek hetero- (different) and pneus (breathing), while the epithet fossilis is Latin meaning 'dug from the earth' or 'pertaining to digging', a reference to its burrowing habits in mud during dry periods. The name Heteropneustes microps is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

The stinging catfish has a long, laterally compressed body with a broad, depressed head and a wide mouth equipped with four pairs of barbels — one long maxillary pair and three shorter mandibular pairs. The skin is completely scaleless and smooth, an important consideration for medication. Colour is a dark olive-brown to grey-black dorsally, fading to a paler yellowish or cream underside; a faint pale lateral stripe is sometimes visible along the flanks.

The most distinctive anatomical feature is the pair of accessory respiratory organs — elongated, sac-like outgrowths of the gill chambers that extend back beneath the skin along the body sides, packed with vascular tissue for extracting oxygen from swallowed air. These allow the fish to survive in hypoxic conditions and to travel short distances overland. Maximum reported size is 23.5 in standard length (SL), though most aquarium specimens are considerably smaller; wild adults of 12–15.5 in are common.

The pectoral fin spines are stiff, serrated, and locking — they can be erected and held firm when the fish is threatened. Reports of venom glands associated with these spines exist in the literature, and stings from captive fish are painful and reportedly carry venom, earning the species its most widely used common name, the stinging catfish.

Habitat

Heteropneustes fossilis ranges across much of South Asia from India and Bangladesh through Myanmar and into parts of Sri Lanka, Thailand and neighbouring countries. It is a fish of low-altitude, lowland wetlands: rice paddies, irrigation ditches, sluggish rivers, ponds, marshes and seasonal floodplain pools that regularly experience severe oxygen depletion, turbidity and drying. Its accessory air-breathing organ is an adaptation to precisely these conditions.

Water chemistry in its native range is broadly neutral to slightly acidic — pH roughly 6.5–7.5 — and temperatures range from approximately 72–82 °F across the tropical and subtropical zones it occupies. It is notably tolerant of elevated turbidity and organic loading but is not a blackwater species; the floodplain ponds and rice-paddy systems it inhabits tend toward soft to moderately hard water rather than the mineral-rich alkalinity of rift lakes. During severe dry seasons it can burrow into soft mud and aestivate briefly, surfacing through this ability to endure conditions that eliminate competitors.

Feeding

Heteropneustes fossilis is a nocturnal benthic omnivore and opportunistic predator. In nature it forages after dark along the bottom, consuming aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans — along with detritus, plant material and any small fish or amphibians within reach. At 23.5 in maximum size it is capable of taking prey of significant size, and in South Asia it is an important food fish harvested for human consumption.

In the aquarium it accepts sinking pellets readily and will take frozen bloodworm, earthworms and other meaty foods. Because it is strongly nocturnal, feeding after lights-out prevents competition from more active daytime tankmates and ensures the catfish finds food. Juveniles and subadults eat well on high-protein sinking catfish pellets and frozen or live invertebrates; larger adults should be offered appropriately sized meaty food and their capacity to eat tankmates of swallowable size should be taken seriously when choosing companions.

Mating

Mating in Heteropneustes fossilis is not well documented in the aquarium hobby, and most information on reproduction comes from aquaculture operations in South and Southeast Asia, where the species is commercially important as a food fish and farmed at scale. In the wild, breeding is associated with the monsoon season — rising water levels and warming temperatures appear to trigger spawning activity, a pattern common to many South Asian floodplain fishes.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle; mature females are generally heavier-bodied and have a more rounded abdomen than males. Hormone-induced spawning is the standard commercial technique, using pituitary extract or synthetic hormones to induce ovulation and milt release in fish held in aquaculture ponds. Wild fish likely spawn in shallow, sheltered areas with vegetation, though the precise mechanics of courtship and egg deposition in nature are not thoroughly recorded in the accessible literature.

Breeding

Heteropneustes fossilis is not routinely bred in home aquaria. Commercial production relies on hormone-induced spawning — fish are injected with pituitary extract or synthetic hormones in aquaculture facilities, then allowed to spawn naturally in ponds or stripped for artificial fertilisation. This method works at scale but is not practical for the average aquarist.

Spontaneous breeding in home aquaria is occasionally reported in online accounts but is not a well-established or reliable outcome. When breeding does occur, the species is reported to deposit adhesive eggs in sheltered areas, with the male providing some guarding of the nest site, though this is not comprehensively documented. Keepers hoping to breed the species are better directed toward specialist aquaculture references or institutions with hormone-injection capability. The honest assessment is that home-aquarium breeding is essentially uncharted territory for this species and should not be expected as a routine outcome.

In the aquarium

The stinging catfish is a specialist fish that demands honesty about adult size from the outset. Juveniles are inexpensive and commonly available, but at a maximum of 23.5 in SL this is a fish that grows into predator territory — a tank of at least 105 US gal (around 6 ft long) should be considered a minimum for a well-grown adult. Most aquarium specimens remain smaller, but keepers must plan for the worst case; undersizing is the number-one care failure with this species. Choose tankmates too large to be eaten and robust enough to coexist with a large nocturnal predator.

The skin is entirely scaleless, making Heteropneustes fossilis highly sensitive to copper and to many medications that are tolerated by scaled fish. Treat at half the stated dose (or less) and remove the fish to a bare hospital tank whenever possible — the same precaution applied to loaches, puffers and freshwater eels. The locking pectoral spines can tangle fatally in a fine-mesh net; always move this fish in a container rather than a net. The spines are reported to carry venom and produce painful stings — handle with care.

The fish is a facultative air-breather and gulps surface air regularly; keep the water surface accessible and ensure no tight-fitting lid prevents this behaviour. Provide caves, clay pipes or large pieces of driftwood as daytime refuges — it is strongly nocturnal and will spend daylight hours in cover. Water should be maintained at 72–82 °F and pH 6.5–7.5; it is tolerant of suboptimal conditions but performs best in clean, well-filtered water despite its natural resilience. Feed after lights-out.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Heteropneustes fossilis as Least Concern.

The species has a broad native range across lowland South Asia and is heavily harvested as a food fish, farmed at commercial scale in Bangladesh, India and Vietnam. While farming reduces pressure on wild populations for the food trade, the wild fish faces habitat loss as floodplain ponds, rice paddies and seasonal wetlands are drained or degraded by agricultural intensification, and sustained habitat loss across the Indo-Gangetic Plain and Irrawaddy basin remains a long-term consideration for the species regionally.
