Taxonomy & naming
Batrochoglanis castaneus was described by Oswaldo Shibatta in 2019 as a new species from the Aripuanã River basin, a Madeira/Amazon tributary system in Mato Grosso, Brazil. It sits in the genus Batrochoglanis within the family Pseudopimelodidae — the bumblebee and dwarf pimelodid catfishes — a group that has been repeatedly reshuffled among Pimelodidae and its own family as Siluriformes taxonomy has been revised; the Catalog of Fishes currently places the genus in Pseudopimelodidae, and that placement is followed here.
The species epithet castaneus is Latin for "chestnut-brown", referring to the fish's brownish body colour; the type locality, Igarapé do Castanhal ("Brazil-nut-tree stream"), points at the same chestnut/Brazil-nut association. Batrochoglanis castaneus is known only from its type locality and appears to be a narrow-range endemic of the Aripuanã basin; published data on the species beyond the original description are sparse.
Morphology
As in other Batrochoglanis, expect a broad, flattened, frog-like head (the genus name itself nods to this — see Etymology), a stout body tapering to the tail, and long, prominent barbels used to feel out prey and obstacles in the dark. The body is scaleless, with smooth, naked skin rather than the bony plates of an armoured catfish.
The holotype's precise length was not accessible in the open-access description, so size here is estimated from close congeners: Batrochoglanis raninus reaches about 8 in SL and B. transmontanus about 8.5 in, giving a plausible adult size for B. castaneus of roughly 7–8.5 in. Treat this as an estimate, not a confirmed figure, and always plan a tank around the larger end of that range rather than assuming the fish will stay small.
Habitat
The type locality, Igarapé do Castanhal, is a small stream within the Aripuanã River basin, an Amazon-drainage system in Mato Grosso, Brazil that supports a diverse catfish fauna (the wider Aripuanã basin alone is reported to hold around 25 catfish species). Basins like this mix tropical blackwater and whitewater characteristics, with structure from fallen wood, leaf litter and marginal roots providing cover.
No site-specific water chemistry has been published for B. castaneus itself. Congeners from similar Amazonian/Orinoco habitats are kept and presumably occur in soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral, warm water — for example B. raninus is reported around pH 6.0–7.0 and 70–77 °F, and B. transmontanus around pH 6.0–7.5 and 75–82 °F. These figures are offered as a reasonable proxy, not a confirmed reading for this species.
Feeding
Pseudopimelodids of this build are nocturnal benthic omnivore-predators: they forage the bottom mostly after dark for invertebrates, detritus and small prey, and larger individuals take small fish. Congeners such as B. raninus and B. transmontanus are documented taking small fish and shrimp in the wild and adapting readily to sinking pellets, frozen foods and other prepared foods in the aquarium.
There is no species-specific feeding account for B. castaneus, but the genus's pattern is consistent enough to apply with confidence: offer meaty sinking foods after lights-out so a naturally nocturnal fish is not out-competed by more active, day-active tankmates.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Batrochoglanis castaneus. Data on reproduction in the genus generally are thin; congener accounts (e.g. B. transmontanus) explicitly note that wild breeding has not been documented. Nothing here should be assumed beyond what the source material states — this is an honest gap in current knowledge rather than an oversight.
Breeding
There is no confirmed breeding record for Batrochoglanis castaneus in the wild or in the aquarium. Congeners point the same way: B. raninus has unconfirmed captive spawning and is produced commercially only through hormone induction, and B. transmontanus has no documented wild breeding either. On present evidence Batrochoglanis should be treated as a genus that is essentially not bred by hobbyists — any aquarium stock is wild-collected rather than farm-raised, and no aquarium spawning method can be recommended in good faith.
In the aquarium
This species is not established in the hobby, and stock, if it ever appears in trade, would be wild-collected and scarce. Anyone keeping it should size the tank to the estimated adult length of 7–8.5 in rather than to a juvenile's size at purchase — the size trap is the most common way catfish like this end up outgrowing their home before their keeper expects it.
Like its relatives, B. castaneus has naked, scaleless skin, which makes it more sensitive than scaled fish to copper and many medications; treat conservatively and consider half-dosing where a treatment allows it. Pseudopimelodids also carry stiff, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines that lock erect and readily snag a net, so move the fish in a container rather than netting it directly. Provide dense cover — wood, roots and leaf litter — for daytime hiding, since the fish is expected to be nocturnal like its relatives, and keep tankmates too large to be eaten given its predatory habits.
Conservation
Batrochoglanis castaneus has not yet been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (Not Evaluated). It is known only from its Aripuanã basin type locality in Mato Grosso, Brazil, which suggests a narrow range typical of many recently described Amazonian stream fishes, though no formal range-wide survey or threat assessment has been published.
As with many single-basin, recently described catfish, the main conservation-relevant facts are simply that the species is poorly known and its range appears restricted — a status that argues for caution rather than confidence about its wild population, and for treating any wild-collected trade specimens as coming from an undocumented, potentially vulnerable population.
