One of the smallest loricariids known from the Amazon basin, Parotocinclus aripuanensis barely exceeds 1 in standard length yet carries the full armoured architecture of its family — a reminder that the Hypoptopomatinae diversified largely into the miniature niche, colonising swift-water microhabitats that larger plecos cannot exploit.

Taxonomy & naming

Parotocinclus aripuanensis was described by Garavello in 1988 from specimens collected in the Rio Aripuanã drainage, a right-bank tributary of the Madeira River within the greater Amazon basin, Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and FishBase recognise Parotocinclus aripuanensis as the accepted name.

A significant complication arises from Roxo et al. (2020), who erected the genus Rhinotocinclus and transferred a group of Parotocinclus species into it. PlanetCatfish has adopted this revision and treats P. aripuanensis as a junior synonym of Rhinotocinclus britskii (Boeseman, 1974) — a species whose type locality is a left tributary of the Coppename River in Suriname. If that synonymy is upheld, the valid combination would become Rhinotocinclus britskii and the Aripuanã population would fall within that species concept. The Catalog of Fishes, however, continued to list Parotocinclus aripuanensis as an accepted species at the time of caching; we follow CoF here and note that this name should be monitored closely as the Roxo et al. (2020) revision is assessed by the broader community.

The genus name Parotocinclus combines the Greek para (beside, near) with Otocinclus — the closely related genus from which Parotocinclus is distinguished primarily by the presence of an adipose fin. The species epithet aripuanensis is a toponym honouring the Rio Aripuanã, the drainage from which the type series was collected.

Morphology

Adults of Parotocinclus aripuanensis reach a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in (male/unsexed), placing this species among the smallest loricariids in the Amazon. The body plan follows the typical hypoptopomatine layout: a dorsoventrally flattened profile, fully armoured flanks covered in bony odontode-bearing scutes, a ventrally positioned subterminal mouth with fine teeth adapted for scraping biofilm and periphyton, and a small but present adipose fin — the character that separates Parotocinclus from Otocinclus.

Detailed colouration data for this species specifically are sparse in published sources. As with other small Parotocinclus, a generally cryptic brownish pattern with fine spotting or reticulation across the scutes is probable, providing camouflage against sand, gravel, and algae-covered rock.

Sexual dimorphism in Parotocinclus is generally subtle at these small sizes. PlanetCatfish notes that in related Rhinotocinclus species (under the revised generic assignment), males bear a urogenital papilla posterior to the anus, a deep skin fold on the first pelvic-fin ray, a markedly enlarged nostril that elevates the snout profile in front of the eyes, and proportionally longer pelvic fins compared to females. Whether all these characters apply identically to P. aripuanensis sensu CoF has not been confirmed in published literature.

Habitat

The known distribution of Parotocinclus aripuanensis is the Aripuanã River basin in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The Rio Aripuanã is a blackwater to clearwater river descending from the Brazilian shield and joining the Madeira — itself one of the largest Amazon tributaries — in the western Amazon lowlands.

FishBase categorises this species as freshwater, demersal, and tropical, consistent with a riverbed or hard-substrate microhabitat within the Aripuanã drainage. Specific physico-chemical data for the collection locality have not been published in accessible sources; Aripuanã basin waters are broadly characterised by warm temperatures typical of lowland Amazonia and moderately soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral chemistry where shielded from agricultural influence.

Like other Hypoptopomatinae, P. aripuanensis is presumed to occupy shallow, high-oxygen zones — rocky riffles, root mats, or algae-covered substrate where periphyton growth is sufficient to support a grazing lifestyle. The genus Parotocinclus is also noted as having a capacity for facultative air-breathing, which may allow temporary use of environments with variable dissolved oxygen.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Parotocinclus aripuanensis a trophic level of 2.8, consistent with a herbivore or periphytivore — an organism that feeds primarily on the biofilm community (algae, cyanobacteria, diatoms, associated bacteria, and fine organic detritus) adhering to submerged surfaces. The ventrally placed mouth with fine teeth is well-suited to this aufwuchs grazing strategy.

As with other micro-suckermouth loricariids in the Hypoptopomatinae, individuals are presumed to spend most of their time moving methodically across hard substrate — rock, wood, or root — rasping the periphyton layer. Specific diet records for P. aripuanensis in the wild are not available in the sources consulted.

Mating

No published mating observations are available for Parotocinclus aripuanensis. Based on the reproductive biology of related small Hypoptopomatinae, courtship is likely brief and substrate-associated, with males competing for or defending spawning sites and displaying to females through fin posturing and lateral presentation.

In the revised genus Rhinotocinclus (if the synonymy with R. britskii is accepted), males are distinguished from females by elongated pelvic fins that may reach or nearly reach the anal-fin origin — these proportional differences likely factor into mate assessment, though this remains undocumented for the Aripuanã population specifically.

Breeding

No breeding reports for Parotocinclus aripuanensis have been recorded in the hobby literature or scientific sources consulted. The species is rare in the aquarium trade and has no registered keepers or breeding accounts on PlanetCatfish.

By analogy with better-studied Parotocinclus and Otocinclus species, egg deposition on hard substrates — plant leaves, glass, or smooth rock — is the most probable mode, with eggs adhering individually rather than being deposited in a nest or protected cavity. Parental care is presumed absent or minimal, as is typical for small Hypoptopomatinae. Actual confirmation of these traits for P. aripuanensis awaits either field study or aquarium breeding attempts.

In the aquarium

Parotocinclus aripuanensis is essentially absent from the hobby at the time of writing. Its tiny adult size — under 1 in SL — would make it one of the smallest plecos a keeper could maintain, and its biology implies requirements similar to those for Otocinclus species: clean, well-oxygenated water, stable parameters, mature biofilm-rich surfaces, and the company of conspecifics or other peaceful small fish.

Any keeper who obtains this species should prioritise water quality above all else. Small Hypoptopomatinae are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes, and the Amazonian origin suggests soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at tropical temperatures. A tank with established algae growth on glass and décor, supplemented with algae wafers and fresh vegetables (blanched courgette, cucumber), would best replicate the periphyton-grazing lifestyle. Keeping a small shoal rather than a solitary individual is advisable, as gregarious behaviour is typical for micro-suckermouth loricariids.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Parotocinclus aripuanensis as Least Concern, with the assessment completed on 30 November 2020. The species' range is centred on the Rio Aripuanã basin in Mato Grosso, a region that has experienced significant deforestation and agricultural expansion, particularly associated with soy cultivation and cattle ranching. While the LC status indicates no immediate threat to species survival at the time of assessment, the underlying habitat pressures across the Madeira basin are real and ongoing.

Deforestation adjacent to river channels increases sediment load and alters the biofilm communities that small grazers like P. aripuanensis depend on. The taxonomic uncertainty around this species — specifically whether it represents a distinct taxon or falls within Rhinotocinclus britskii — also affects the precision of any conservation assessment, since a synonymy would alter the perceived range and population size of the species under evaluation.
