Taxonomy & naming
Channallabes longicaudatus was described by the German ichthyologist Max Pappenheim in 1911. Like many older African catfish descriptions, the species has at times been shuffled between clariid genera in the literature, but the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Channallabes longicaudatus as the valid combination, and that is the name used here.
The genus Channallabes sits within Clariidae, the airbreathing or walking catfishes, a family built around an accessory air-breathing organ that lets its members tolerate stagnant, oxygen-poor water. The genus name combines Greek roots referencing the channel-like body form typical of the group, and the species epithet longicaudatus is Latin for "long-tailed," a fair description of this catfish's markedly elongate, eel-like rear half.
Morphology
Channallabes longicaudatus reaches roughly 8.5 in standard length, with a maximum recorded total length of about 12.5 in (12.5 in) — a genuinely substantial fish, not a nano species, and keepers should plan tank size around that real adult length rather than the smaller juveniles usually seen in the trade. The body is elongated and eel-like, tapering into a long tail that gives the species its name, a shape shared with several other Channallabes that use body undulation to move across wet mud and vegetation outside open water.
As in all clariids the skin is naked — there are no scales — which means the fish is more sensitive than a scaled species to copper-based medications and many general treatments; conservative, half-strength dosing is the safer default. The pectoral fins carry stiff, serrated spines that can lock erect, a feature typical of catfishes generally and one that tangles readily in an aquarium net, so this species is best moved in a container rather than netted.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Ivindo River drainage in Gabon and the Mbini River system (a tributary complex) in Equatorial Guinea — a narrow range within the forested river systems of west-central Africa. It is described as a freshwater, benthopelagic species, living near the bottom of its river habitat rather than in open water.
Detailed water chemistry data specific to this species has not been published, but Clariidae as a family are characteristic of warm, often low-oxygen freshwater — swamps, floodplain channels, and slow river margins — and typically tolerate a broad range of temperature and pH. Data on this species' exact preferences is sparse; treat it as a warm-water, mineral-modest tropical African river fish rather than assuming soft blackwater conditions without direct evidence.
Feeding
Channallabes longicaudatus is assigned a trophic level around 3.4 by FishBase, consistent with a mid-level carnivore rather than a specialist. That places it with the general clariid pattern: a nocturnal, benthic forager that takes invertebrates and other prey encountered on or near the substrate.
In the aquarium, catfish of this type generally accept sinking pellets, frozen foods (bloodworm, prawn, mussel), and other prepared carnivore diets, with feeding best offered after lights-out since the species is presumed nocturnal like its relatives. Given how little is published specifically on this species' captive diet, keepers should follow the safer, well-documented pattern for airbreathing catfish generally rather than assume its exact wild diet is known in detail.
Mating
No published account of courtship or spawning behaviour for Channallabes longicaudatus was found in the sources consulted. Data is sparse to the point that even the basic reproductive biology of this species has not been documented in the literature available.
Breeding
There is no confirmed record of Channallabes longicaudatus being bred in the aquarium, and no description of its natural spawning mode is available from the sources used here. Prospective keepers should not expect to breed this fish and should treat any claim of home breeding with caution until documented.
In the aquarium
This is not a small fish — with a documented total length of roughly 12.5 in, Channallabes longicaudatus needs a large, secure tank as an adult, and the size trap of buying a small juvenile without planning for that eventual length is the single biggest care mistake with this species. As a facultative air-breather, it benefits from easy access to the surface and will not thrive in a tightly sealed, gas-tight setup; like other clariids it can also tolerate lower dissolved oxygen than most community fish.
Because its skin is scaleless, dose medications — copper treatments especially — conservatively. Its pectoral spines lock and can snag a net or jab a careless hand, so scoop it in a container instead. Provide secure cover, since it is presumably nocturnal like most of its family, and keep the lid tight: elongate, air-breathing clariid catfishes are accomplished escape artists. As with all Clariidae, never release surplus stock into local waterways — relatives in this family are notorious invasive species elsewhere in the world.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List lists Channallabes longicaudatus as Data Deficient. With a known range restricted to the Ivindo River in Gabon and the Mbini tributary system in Equatorial Guinea, and with no numeric IUCN assessment identifier located, there simply is not enough published survey data to assign a threat category one way or the other.
A narrow-range river endemic like this is worth watching as forestry, agriculture, and development pressure on Gabonese and Equatoguinean river systems increases, but no species-specific conservation data or targeted assessment is currently available to say more.
