Channallabes apus, the eel catfish, is one of the most unusually shaped members of the family Clariidae — a scaleless, elongated Central African catfish so reduced in body plan that it lacks functional pectoral fins entirely and moves through dense swamp vegetation and leaf litter in an almost serpentine fashion. A facultative air-breather like its clariid relatives, it can venture briefly onto land to forage, a trait that makes it as fascinating as it is demanding to keep: it is an escape artist, a burrower, a nocturnal micro-predator, and an uncommon aquarium subject that rewards careful attention to its needs.

Taxonomy & naming

Channallabes apus was originally described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1873, initially under the combination Gymnallabes apus before being placed in the monotypic genus Channallabes. The species belongs to the family Clariidae (the airbreathing catfishes), a group of scaleless, obligate-to-facultative air-breathers distributed across Africa and South and Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Channallabes apus as the valid name and Channallabes as the accepted genus.

The epithet apus is derived from the Greek apous, meaning 'without feet' or 'footless' — a reference to the absence of functional pectoral fins, which distinguishes this genus from most other clariids. The genus name Channallabes combines elements meaning 'eel-like clariid', reflecting the snake-like body that has been taken to an extreme in this lineage. The species is sometimes confused with other elongated African clariids (such as Gymnallabes or Dolichallabes), but the complete absence of pectoral fins and the slender, uniform body are characteristic of Channallabes.

Morphology

Channallabes apus is an exceptionally elongated catfish with a nearly cylindrical body tapering toward the tail — the overall effect is more eel-like than fish-like. The dorsal and anal fins run as long, low ribbons along most of the body length, and the caudal fin is small and rounded. Most strikingly, the pectoral fins are absent or so severely reduced as to be non-functional, a unique feature among clariids.

Maximum reported size is around 16.5 in total length (FishBase), though most specimens encountered in the trade are considerably smaller, typically in the 12–13 in range. The skin is entirely scaleless and naked — smooth, slightly mucus-coated, and without the bony plates that protect many other catfishes. The eyes are small and poorly developed, consistent with a life spent in turbid, densely vegetated swamp environments. The mouth bears three pairs of barbels for sensing prey in low-visibility conditions.

Habitat

This species inhabits a broad swath of Central and West-Central Africa: the Kouilou basin in the Republic of the Congo south through much of the Congo River basin (including lower, middle, and upper reaches) to the Loge River basin in northern Angola. It is a fish of muddy swamps, sluggish forest streams, and densely vegetated margins — environments choked with tree roots, submerged leaf litter, and soft, organic-rich substrate.

Water conditions in these habitats are soft to mildly hard and slightly acid to neutral. FishBase records temperatures of 72–81 °F and a pH range of 5.8–7.8, reflecting the variable chemistry of shallow Central African swamps. The substrate is typically fine silt or mud, and the species burrows extensively when not actively foraging. As an airbreathing clariid it can survive in poorly oxygenated water by rising to the surface or even venturing onto damp substrate.

Feeding

Channallabes apus is a nocturnal omnivore and opportunistic micro-predator. In the wild it forages through root masses and leaf litter for invertebrates — beetles, worms, and small crustaceans (shrimp) are documented prey items. The ability to move across damp substrate means it can forage on land for terrestrial invertebrates, a rare feeding strategy among catfishes.

In the aquarium it readily accepts a variety of foods: sinking tablet or wafer foods, live or frozen earthworms, bloodworms (chironomid larvae), and frozen shrimp are all reported as accepted. Like other nocturnal catfishes it is best fed after lights-out, when it becomes active and is not out-competed by diurnal tankmates. It does not require live food to thrive, but relishes it.

Mating

Virtually nothing is documented about the mating behaviour of Channallabes apus in the wild or in aquaria. ScotCat references suggest that wild fish nest in exposed tree-root masses near stream banks, which would be consistent with the cavity-shelter spawning behaviour seen in other clariids, but confirmed courtship and spawning observations for this species are essentially absent from the published record.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle: females are reported to be noticeably larger than males at maturity (ScotCat), which may assist in sexing conditioned adults. No pair-bonding or territorial pre-spawning behaviour has been described for the species.

Breeding

Channallabes apus is not bred in home aquaria in any documented, repeatable way. The cache records limited aquarium breeding information, noting only that wild fish nest near tree-root masses. Large clariids in general are farm-bred commercially through hormone induction, and there is no evidence that Channallabes apus has been bred by hobbyists under controlled conditions.

Given its clariid affinity, it would be reasonable to expect spawning in a sheltered cavity (roots, hollow, or dense cover) if breeding were achieved, potentially with some degree of egg guarding by the male, consistent with behaviour in related species — but this is speculative. Keepers should not expect home breeding and should treat any aquarium specimens as likely wild-collected.

In the aquarium

Channallabes apus is an uncommon, specialist aquarium fish suited to experienced keepers. At up to roughly 16.5 in it is a substantial animal and needs a tank of at least 47 in (four feet) in length to provide adequate swimming room and shelter. A close-fitting, weighted lid is essential — this species is a confirmed escape artist, and its ability to move across damp surfaces means even small gaps are a risk. Keep the aquarium dimly lit; it is a low-light, heavily vegetated swamp species.

Soft substrate — fine sand or smooth, rounded small gravel — is important. The species burrows actively, and sharp-edged gravel or bare glass can abrade its scaleless skin. The skin is entirely unprotected (scaleless), which makes it significantly more sensitive to copper-based medications and many other treatments than a scaled fish; dose conservatively (half-dose is commonly advised) and avoid prolonged copper exposure. It lacks functional pectoral fins and is best moved in a smooth container rather than a net, which would in any case be difficult given its eel-like body shape.

The species is a facultative air-breather; it rises to the surface to gulp air and must always have unobstructed access to the surface. Water temperature of 72–81 °F and pH 5.8–7.8, on the softer side, suits it well. Small groups (three to four individuals) are reported to coexist without conflict. It is peaceful toward tankmates it cannot swallow, but will take very small fish or invertebrates; choose robust tankmates of comparable size.

Conservation

Channallabes apus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The species occurs across a large geographic range in Central Africa — from the Republic of the Congo through much of the Congo basin to northern Angola — and inhabits a variety of swamp and forest-stream habitats that are widespread if not always pristine.

Conservation data are sparse. Pressures across its range include wetland drainage, deforestation of riparian forest, agricultural expansion, and water pollution, all of which degrade the shallow swamp and forest-stream microhabitats this species depends on. Aquarium specimens are almost certainly wild-collected given the lack of any captive breeding programme, and the species is uncommon enough in the trade that collection pressure is unlikely to be significant. A formal IUCN assessment would require better field survey data.
