Taxonomy & naming
Channallabes ogooensis was formally described by Sam Devaere, Dominique Adriaens and Walter Verraes in 2007, in a survey of the anguilliform (eel-shaped) Clariidae of Gabon and the Republic of Congo published in the Belgian Journal of Zoology (137: 99–109). The description covered two new species and provided a key to the African clariid catfishes, placing ogooensis firmly within the airbreathing walking-catfish family Clariidae and the genus Channallabes.
The species has at times circulated under the older, catch-all genus name Chrysichthys in secondary databases — a mismatch from the pre-molecular era of African catfish taxonomy, since Chrysichthys is in fact a bagrid genus, not a clariid one. The Catalog of Fishes and the original 2007 description are the authorities followed here, and the valid combination is Channallabes ogooensis. The genus Channallabes itself groups a handful of highly elongated, reduced-eyed African clariids best known through the more widely kept Channallabes apus.
Morphology
Channallabes ogooensis shares the anguilliform (eel-like) body plan that defines its genus: a long, slender, laterally compressed trunk, a low, continuous dorsal fin running much of the body's length, and correspondingly reduced or vestigial paired fins compared to more typically shaped clariids. The holotype measured 6 in (6 in) standard length, and reported maximum size for the species reaches about 9.5 in SL.
As in all Clariidae the skin is completely scaleless — smooth and naked rather than plated — which has direct implications for medication sensitivity (see "In the aquarium"). The head is broad and somewhat flattened, with barbels typical of the family for locating food by touch in murky or leaf-littered water. Like other Channallabes it is built for pushing through mud, root tangles and flooded leaf litter rather than open-water swimming.
Habitat
The species is known from the Ogowe (Ogooué) River drainage of Gabon, with the type locality near Franceville; other sources extend its range to the Rembo Nkomi and Nyanga River systems of Gabon as well. These are warm, lowland Central African river systems draining rainforest terrain, the same general region that has produced several other elongate, litter-dwelling clariids described in the same survey.
Within these rivers, anguilliform clariids like Channallabes typically live in soft substrates, flooded margins and leaf litter, using their air-breathing capacity to tolerate the low-oxygen conditions that come with dense vegetation and slow-moving or seasonally stagnant water. Specific water chemistry data for this species was not captured in available sources; treat any precise pH or hardness figures as unconfirmed rather than assume typical soft-blackwater conditions.
Feeding
No species-specific feeding studies were located for Channallabes ogooensis, but its family and genus place it firmly as a nocturnal benthic omnivore/micro-predator: an opportunistic forager working the bottom and leaf litter mostly after dark for invertebrates, detritus and small prey, in keeping with the general Clariidae pattern.
In the aquarium, catfish of this build typically take sinking pellets, frozen foods and other prepared foods readily once settled, and do best fed after lights-out so a shy, elongate, litter-dwelling species is not out-competed by more active tankmates. Given the sparse documentation for this particular species, keepers should treat its feeding regime as inferred from the genus rather than confirmed by direct study.
Mating
No description of courtship or spawning behaviour for Channallabes ogooensis was found in available sources. Data is sparse for this recently described, poorly studied species, and nothing here should be assumed to mirror any other clariid's mating pattern without confirmation.
Breeding
Breeding of Channallabes ogooensis has not been documented in the aquarium hobby, and no captive-breeding reports were located. As with many obscure, recently described African clariids, it should be treated as effectively unbred in captivity; any fish in the trade almost certainly originates from wild collection rather than captive propagation. Keepers should not assume this species follows the bubble-nest or cavity-spawning patterns seen in other catfish families — its actual reproductive biology remains unrecorded in the literature reviewed here.
In the aquarium
Channallabes ogooensis reaches roughly 6–9.5 in — a genuinely elongated, eel-bodied catfish rather than a small or ornamental one, and any tank plan should be sized to the upper end of that range rather than to a juvenile's proportions. Like all Clariidae it is a naked-skinned, scaleless fish, which makes it more sensitive than scaled species to copper-based medications and many standard treatments; dose conservatively, as with loaches, puffers and eels.
As an airbreather it relies on access to the surface to gulp atmospheric air via its arborescent breathing organ, so it needs a tank that is not sealed tight and ideally some open water at the top. Its elongate, near-limbless body and reduced eyes point to a burrowing, litter-sifting lifestyle: expect it to hide in root tangles, soft substrate or thick leaf litter and to be most active at night. Handle it in a container rather than a net, as with other clariids, to avoid tangling stiff spines and to reduce stress on a fish adapted to squeezing through tight cover. Because this species is so poorly documented in captivity, treat any husbandry plan as provisional and be prepared to adjust based on the individual fish's behaviour.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Channallabes ogooensis as Data Deficient, reflecting how little is known about its population size, trends and threats since its 2007 description. It appears to be endemic to Gabon's Ogowe drainage and associated coastal rivers, a region that has not been exhaustively surveyed for this species' status.
As with many recently described, single-country African catfish, the main conservation-relevant fact for aquarists is the uncertainty itself: there is no basis in current data for treating this species as either secure or threatened, and any wild collection for the trade should be weighed against that uncertainty.
