Taxonomy & naming
Chiloglanis congicus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1920. It sits in the family Mochokidae, the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes, in the genus Chiloglanis — a large group of small suckermouth species found in fast water across tropical Africa. As with other Mochokidae, older literature and some historical collections have shuffled small Chiloglanis species between genera over the decades, but the Catalog of Fishes maintains congicus in Chiloglanis, and that placement is used here.
The genus name Chiloglanis derives from the Greek cheilos (lip) and glanis (a catfish), a direct reference to the enlarged, sucker-like lips that define the genus. The epithet congicus simply means "of the Congo", naming the river system the species is endemic to. It carries the vertebral count typical of the genus (32–33 vertebrae) and the type locality lies in the Congo River rapids.
Morphology
This is a small catfish, reaching only about 3 in total length, with the flattened, teardrop-shaped body typical of rapids-dwelling Chiloglanis. The head and lips are modified into a broad, fleshy oral disc that functions as a suction cup, letting the fish grip smooth or rough rock in current that would sweep an ordinary fish away. Like all catfish in this family the skin carries no scales, which is worth remembering when medicating this species.
As in other squeakers, Chiloglanis congicus bears stiffened pectoral and dorsal spines that can be locked erect and rasped to produce an audible squeak, a trait shared across Mochokidae and thought to serve defensive and communicative purposes. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented for this species in the sources available; the cache carries no data on external differences between males and females, so this is left unstated rather than guessed.
Habitat
Chiloglanis congicus is endemic to the Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, known from Stanley Falls near Kisangani, Pool Malebo (Stanley Pool), the rapids at the Pool's outflow, the rapids of the lower Congo, and the Inkisi River. Every one of these localities is defined by strong current over rock and rubble — this is a lotic, high-energy habitat, not slack water or still pools.
The species lives clinging to rock faces in the fastest, most turbulent stretches of one of the world's largest rivers, a niche that its suckermouth is built for. General sources on the family describe warm, soft-to-neutral tropical river water for Chiloglanis, but the cache does not give precise pH or hardness figures specific to congicus, so exact numbers are given cautiously below.
Feeding
Chiloglanis congicus is a nocturnal benthic omnivore, grazing the rock surfaces of its rapids habitat for algae and biofilm and picking off small invertebrates, much like its relatives in the genus and family. Feeding activity in related squeakers concentrates after dark, when the fish leaves cover to work over the substrate.
In the aquarium this translates to a diet of sinking pellets, frozen foods and some vegetable/algae-based foods, offered in the evening or after lights-out so a shy, small nocturnal fish is not out-competed by more active tankmates. Given its rock-grazing habit in the wild, a tank with some natural algae or biofilm growth on hardscape suits it well.
Mating
FishBase records Chiloglanis congicus as oviparous with distinct pairing during breeding, but the sources available do not describe courtship behaviour, spawning site, or egg-laying specifics for this species. Rather than default to the open-water egg-scattering seen in many larger Synodontis, this account leaves the mating description honestly thin: data is sparse for this small rapids-endemic, and nothing here should be read as more specific than "pairs, then spawns" as the sources state.
Breeding
There is no record in the cache of Chiloglanis congicus being bred in captivity, and no aquarium-breeding account for this species is documented in the available literature. Given its dependence on strong, oxygen-rich rapids current and rock substrate to complete its life cycle, it is very unlikely to be a species that spawns readily in typical home aquarium conditions.
As with many small, rapids-restricted African catfish, the aquarium trade in this species — where it appears at all — almost certainly relies on wild-collected fish rather than captive breeding. Prospective keepers should treat any specimen as wild-caught and source responsibly.
In the aquarium
Chiloglanis congicus stays genuinely small at around 3 in, but it is a specialist, not a beginner community fish: it needs strong, well-oxygenated current and rocky hardscape to mimic the rapids it comes from, conditions most community tanks do not provide. A powerhead or high-flow filter return directed across rockwork, along with a stable temperature and clean, well-oxygenated water, comes closest to replicating its Congo rapids habitat.
Like all catfish in this family it is scaleless, so it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and should be dosed conservatively, at half strength or less, when treatment is unavoidable. It also carries locking pectoral and dorsal spines that can snag in a net and jab the keeper, so it is best scooped and moved in a container rather than netted. As a nocturnal fish it appreciates caves and rock crevices for daytime cover, and should be fed after dark to make sure it gets its share of food.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chiloglanis congicus as Least Concern, with no critical threats currently documented for the species as of its most recent assessment. It occupies a demanding but stable niche — fast rocky rapids across a large stretch of the Congo River system — that has so far kept it out of immediate conservation concern.
As with other rapids specialists in the Congo basin, the long-term outlook depends on the health of that river system: dam construction, water quality changes and habitat disruption in the rapids and cataracts it depends on are the pressures most likely to matter for a species this tightly tied to a single kind of fast-water habitat.
