Taxonomy & naming
Chiloglanis deckenii was described by the German naturalist Wilhelm Peters in 1868. It belongs to the family Mochokidae, the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes, and to the genus Chiloglanis, a group of small suckermouth squeakers found across sub-Saharan Africa. The Catalog of Fishes and GBIF both treat Chiloglanis deckenii as the currently valid name, with the type locality given as Rufu bei Korogwe, in the Pangani River drainage of Tanzania.
The genus name Chiloglanis derives from the Greek cheilos (lip) and glanis (an old name for a catfish), a direct reference to the enlarged, sucker-forming lips that define the genus. As with many small African riverine catfishes described in the nineteenth century, older literature and museum labels sometimes filed species like this one under broader or now-obsolete catfish groupings; the Catalog of Fishes has since settled the genus as Chiloglanis, and that is the name used here.
Morphology
Chiloglanis deckenii is a small, dorsoventrally flattened catfish reaching only about 3 in standard length, among the smallest catfishes covered in this atlas. Like other members of its genus, its most distinctive feature is a suckermouth formed from modified lips and barbels on the underside of the head, an adaptation for clinging to rock in current rather than for suction-feeding in the way of plecos.
