Taxonomy & naming
Chiloglanis disneyi was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1974. It belongs to the family Mochokidae, the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes, in the genus Chiloglanis — the suckermouth squeakers, a group of small rheophilic (current-loving) catfishes distinguished from their Synodontis relatives by a modified, disc-like oral sucker used to cling to rocks in fast water.
The genus name Chiloglanis comes from the Greek cheilos (lip) and glanis (an old name for a catfish), referring to the fleshy, sucker-like lips that define the genus. The species is named for its describer's associate or collector — as with many Trewavas-era species names, the exact dedication is not documented in the sources consulted here. The Catalog of Fishes treats Chiloglanis disneyi as the valid name; there is no indication in available sources that it has ever been placed in another genus.
Morphology
Chiloglanis disneyi is one of the smallest catfishes in this atlas, reaching only about 1.5 in standard length. Like other members of its genus it has a flattened head and an underslung mouth modified into a fleshy, disc-shaped sucker with radiating grooves — the anatomical signature of the suckermouth squeakers, used to grip rock surfaces against strong current rather than to feed by suction alone.
The body is scaleless, as in all mochokid catfishes, and carries the stiff, serrated, locking spine at the leading edge of the pectoral fins that gives "squeakers" their name and their common defence mechanism, though this species is not known to be venomous. Its naked skin means it shares the medication sensitivity typical of scaleless catfishes, loaches and similar groups — a point that matters far more for care than for identification, given how small and unobtrusive the fish is.
Habitat
The species is known from the Ndian, Mungo and Cross River basins straddling the Cameroon–Nigeria border, with its type locality in the Mungo River. These are fast-flowing forest streams and rivers, and Chiloglanis disneyi is strictly rheophilic — it is a riffle specialist, found clinging to rocks in well-oxygenated, moving water rather than in still pools or backwaters.
Recorded water at the Mungo River locality runs neutral to slightly alkaline, around pH 7.6–7.8. The fast, shaded forest-stream habitat suggests moderate, relatively cool-to-warm temperatures in roughly the 72–79 °F range, with water that is well aerated by the current rather than mineral-rich or hard by nature. Feeding
Chiloglanis disneyi is a nocturnal benthic omnivore that forages after dark, working the surfaces of rocks and stones for invertebrates, algae and detritus dislodged or trapped by the current. Its sucker mouth lets it hold station on a rock face in strong flow while it feeds, a very different strategy from the mud-and-sediment foraging typical of larger, softer-water catfishes.
In the aquarium it should be offered sinking pellets and frozen foods, ideally given after lights-out so this small, retiring fish is not out-competed by more assertive tankmates at feeding time. Some grazing on aquarium biofilm and algae is likely given its wild diet, but this should not be relied on as a sole food source.
Mating
Chiloglanis disneyi is oviparous, and FishBase records that it forms distinct pairs during breeding rather than spawning in an open aggregation. Beyond that, courtship behaviour has not been documented in the sources available here; PlanetCatfish material describing it as a likely cavity-nesting pair-spawner could not be independently confirmed due to access restrictions on that source. Treat the cavity-spawning description as plausible but unverified rather than established fact.
Breeding
This species is not established as a regularly captive-bred aquarium fish. Its small size, obligate riffle habitat and reliance on fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water make it a difficult candidate for home spawning, and no reliable aquarium breeding account was found in the sources consulted here. As with many small rheophilic Chiloglanis, most specimens reaching the hobby are likely wild-collected rather than tank-raised. Given the pairing behaviour noted on FishBase, cave or crevice spawning with some form of guarding is plausible for the genus, but this should be treated as an informed guess rather than a documented mode for this species specifically.
In the aquarium
Chiloglanis disneyi stays genuinely tiny — about 1.5 in — so it does not present the size trap that catches out keepers of larger catfish, but it does present a current trap: this is a riffle specialist that needs strong water movement and excellent oxygenation, more like a hillstream loach setup than a typical lowland catfish tank. A shallow tank with a powerful powerhead or two, a rocky substrate for it to grip, and pristine, well-oxygenated water suit it far better than the sluggish, decor-heavy setups common in general catfish keeping.
Because it is scaleless, it carries the medication sensitivity typical of naked-skinned catfishes — dose copper-based treatments and other medications conservatively. It also carries a small locking pectoral spine typical of squeakers; handle or move it in a container of water rather than a net to avoid snagging it. It is a peaceful, retiring fish best suited to a dedicated rheophile or hillstream-biotope tank rather than a general community, and given its wild-collected origin and specialist needs it is not a fish for beginners.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chiloglanis disneyi as Least Concern, based on the 2022 assessment. It is a small-range endemic restricted to a handful of forest river systems on the Cameroon–Nigeria border, and while the current assessment is not one of elevated concern, the human impact on its specific streams is described as uncertain in available sources.
As with many small, single-region rheophilic catfishes, its future depends on the health of fast-flowing forest streams that are vulnerable to deforestation, siltation and altered flow regimes even when the species itself is not directly targeted by fishing or the aquarium trade.
