Taxonomy & naming
Chiloglanis igamba was described in 2011 by John Friel and Gregory Vigliotta in a Zootaxa paper (Zootaxa 3063: 1–21) that erected three new species of the genus at once — igamba, polypogon and benuensis. It belongs to the family Mochokidae, the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes, within the large rock-clinging genus Chiloglanis, whose members are sometimes called suckermouth squeakers for their sucker-disc mouths.
The holotype (CUMV 90576) was collected from the Malagarasi River in Kigoma Region, Tanzania, at Lower Igamba Falls, and the species epithet igamba refers directly to that type locality. As a recently described, narrow-range species, C. igamba has not been subject to any generic reshuffling since its description; the Catalog of Fishes treats Chiloglanis igamba as the current valid combination.
Morphology
Chiloglanis igamba is a small catfish, reaching only about 2.5 in standard length, well within the typical size range for the genus. Like other Chiloglanis it has a flattened head and a ventral sucker-mouth formed from modified lips, an adaptation for gripping rock surfaces in fast water rather than for suction-feeding on food. The skin is naked and scaleless, as in all mochokids.
The original description notes sexual dimorphism in the caudal fin, distinguishing males from females — a detail used alongside body proportions and pigmentation to separate C. igamba from its close relatives described in the same paper. Beyond this the species has not been the subject of detailed morphological study outside the type description, and no live photographs or aquarium accounts appear to exist.
Habitat
Chiloglanis igamba is endemic to the Malagarasi River basin in western Tanzania, part of the wider Lake Tanganyika watershed. The type series and subsequent records come specifically from the Igamba Falls area and the large rapids associated with it; the species is reported as much less common in smaller rapids upstream and downstream, suggesting a preference for strong, well-oxygenated current over rock substrate rather than the river's slower reaches.
The Malagarasi is Tanzania's second-longest river, running through the Malagarasi-Muyovozi wetlands at roughly 1,656 ft elevation before reaching Lake Tanganyika, and supports more than 50 indigenous fish species. Recorded water temperatures in the July–August dry season range from a cool 54 °F up to about 68 °F, cooler than many lowland tropical African rivers. Detailed pH and hardness data specific to C. igamba's rapids have not been published; data is sparse beyond the general river ecology.
Feeding
No diet study exists for Chiloglanis igamba specifically. Rock-clinging Chiloglanis species as a genus are generally understood as nocturnal benthic grazers and micro-predators, browsing algae, biofilm and small invertebrates from rock surfaces in current, and this is consistent with the species' sucker-mouth anatomy and rapids habitat, but it should be read as inference from the genus rather than a confirmed observation for igamba.
Aquarium accounts of the wider genus describe an omnivorous fish that will take small live and frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm, along with algae wafers and blanched vegetables, but no such account exists for this species since it has essentially never been kept.
Mating
Nothing has been published on the courtship or spawning behaviour of Chiloglanis igamba. The species was described from preserved museum material collected for taxonomic purposes, not from field or aquarium observation of live behaviour, and no subsequent study appears to have addressed reproduction in this species.
Breeding
Breeding of Chiloglanis igamba in the aquarium is unknown and, as far as available sources show, has never been attempted or achieved — the species has essentially no aquarium history. More broadly, most Chiloglanis are rheophilic rock-clingers that are rarely if ever bred in captivity, since replicating the strong, well-oxygenated flow of their rapids habitat at spawning scale is difficult in home aquaria. Nothing should be assumed about parental care or spawning mode for this species; it is honestly unknown.
In the aquarium
Chiloglanis igamba is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it is a narrow-range endemic of a single stretch of the Malagarasi River, has essentially never been imported, and no husbandry record exists. Anyone who did encounter it would need to treat it as a true rheophilic species: a tank with strong, well-oxygenated current, a rocky substrate for gripping, and cool-to-warm water in the range the Malagarasi itself experiences, rather than a typical warm, still tropical community setup.
As with all mochokid catfishes, the naked, scaleless skin makes it medication-sensitive, so copper-based and other treatments would need to be dosed conservatively. Its small size (to about 2.5 in) keeps it within reach of a modest species tank, but the total absence of husbandry data means any care advice beyond matching the wild rapids habitat is speculative.
Conservation
Chiloglanis igamba has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation status; it is Not Evaluated. As a species restricted to a single falls-and-rapids system on the Malagarasi River, described only in 2011 and known from very few records, its narrow range is a plausible long-term conservation concern even without a formal assessment.
The Malagarasi-Muyovozi wetland system faces pressures typical of East African river basins — sedimentation, water use change and habitat disturbance — that could affect a habitat specialist restricted to specific rapids. No population trend or threat data specific to this species has been published; a formal Red List assessment would be needed to establish its true conservation status.
