Taxonomy & naming
Chiloglanis kabaensis was described by Schmidt and Friel in 2017 in the journal Copeia, one of nine new Chiloglanis species erected in that single paper from streams across the Upper Guinean forest biodiversity hotspot in West Africa. It belongs to the family Mochokidae — the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes — a large group whose classification has been repeatedly reshuffled as more of its rheophilic, rock-dwelling species are described and separated on fine differences in tooth counts, barbel length, and fin-spine proportions. The holotype, a 1.5 in SL male cataloged as TU 203560, was collected from the Little Scarcies (Kaba) River in Guinea.
The species epithet kabaensis simply marks its type locality, the Kaba River drainage. In the original description the authors distinguished it from its close congeners by a combination of characters: fewer mandibular teeth, moderately long mandibular barbels, and shorter dorsal and pectoral spines than related species sharing the same forest streams. As with many recently split Chiloglanis, older regional literature may still lump populations like this one under a broader, now-outdated species concept; the genus itself has never been placed in older catfish families such as Doras or Silurus, and Chiloglanis kabaensis is the currently accepted, valid combination.
Morphology
Chiloglanis kabaensis is a genuinely small catfish, reaching only about 2 in SL at maximum — smaller than a thumb. Like other members of the genus it has the flattened head and depressed body typical of rock-clinging mochokids, with an underslung, disc-like sucker mouth adapted for gripping rock surfaces in fast water rather than the barbel-fringed mouth of most other squeakers. The mandibular barbels are moderately long for the genus, and the dorsal and pectoral spines are comparatively short compared with related Chiloglanis species from the same river system — one of the diagnostic features used to separate it from its close relatives.
As in all Mochokidae the skin is scaleless. This has a direct, practical consequence: naked-skinned catfish like this one are markedly more sensitive to copper and many other medications than scaled fish, a point worth remembering for anyone attempting to keep or treat one. The pectoral and dorsal fins carry the stiff, serrated, locking spines typical of the family, which can snag in a net.
Habitat
The species is known only from the upper Little Scarcies (Kaba) River drainage, which rises in Guinea and flows down through Sierra Leone to the Atlantic — part of the Upper Guinean forest region, one of West Africa's richest and most threatened freshwater biodiversity hotspots. Within that river it occupies riffles and other fast-flowing stretches, typically around large rocks and accumulations of woody debris, a classic rheophilic (flowing-water specialist) niche shared by most small Chiloglanis.
Water in the Little Scarcies system is soft to moderately mineralised and close to neutral — reported values for the river are around pH 6.9–7.2, 3–8 dH, and 75–81 °F — very different from the harder, more alkaline water of the African Rift lakes home to many other squeaker catfishes. The wider river also includes muddy, vegetated stretches with mangrove roots downstream, but C. kabaensis itself is a current specialist, clinging to hard rock and wood surfaces rather than burrowing in soft sediment.
Feeding
Direct dietary data for Chiloglanis kabaensis itself is sparse, but the genus is well characterised: Chiloglanis are nocturnal, benthic omnivores that graze algae, biofilm, and small invertebrates from rock and wood surfaces in fast-flowing water, foraging mostly after dark. Related species such as C. polypogon take small live and frozen foods (daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm) as well as soft greenstuff like cucumber when kept in aquaria.
In any setting resembling captivity, this feeding style would need to be matched: sinking foods offered after lights-out, plus surfaces (rock, wood) that can grow a biofilm for the fish to graze between feedings, rather than relying on food dropped into open water during the day.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behavior has been documented for Chiloglanis kabaensis. The species was described from a small series of preserved specimens collected for taxonomic work, not observed live in the field or in captivity, and nothing in the available literature describes pairing, courtship displays, or spawning site selection for this particular species.
Breeding
Breeding biology for Chiloglanis kabaensis is unknown, and this species is not known to have been bred or even maintained in aquaria. Data is sparse for the genus generally, though a wide-mouthed, rock-clinging body plan and Endangered conservation status make it very unlikely to be a hobby-breeding candidate: it is best regarded, on current evidence, as a scientifically described but essentially unstudied-in-captivity river specialist rather than an aquarium fish with an established breeding protocol.
In the aquarium
Chiloglanis kabaensis is not established in the aquarium trade, and there is no documented care history to draw on — this account should be read as an inference from the genus and the species' known biology, not a tested protocol. Any attempt to keep it would need to replicate strong, well-oxygenated current over hard surfaces (rock, driftwood) rather than a calm, planted setup, plus soft-to-moderate, near-neutral water in the range the Kaba River itself provides (roughly pH 6.9–7.2, 3–8 dH, 75–81 °F).
Two care points follow directly from its biology and apply to any Chiloglanis kept in captivity. First, it is scaleless, so it is medication-sensitive — copper-based treatments and many other medications should be dosed conservatively, often at half strength, as with loaches and other naked-skinned catfish. Second, it carries stiff, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that can snag a net and jab the handler; move it in a container rather than netting it. At barely 2 in it stays genuinely small, unlike many catfish that outgrow home tanks, but its Endangered status and total lack of an established husbandry record mean it should not be sourced from wild collection for the hobby.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chiloglanis kabaensis as Endangered (EN), assessed in 2019 under criterion B1ab(iii). The species is known only from the upper Little Scarcies (Kaba) River drainage, with an extent of occurrence estimated at roughly 3,122 mi² across just three threat-defined locations — a genuinely narrow-range endemic.
The principal pressures are deforestation, agricultural expansion, and pollution within its small Upper Guinean forest catchment, all of which degrade the clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated riffle habitat this rheophilic species depends on. Because it has no aquarium trade presence, collection pressure is not a factor; habitat protection in the Little Scarcies drainage is the relevant conservation lever for this species.
