Taxonomy & naming
Chiloglanis kalambo was described by Ulrich Schliewen (writing as "Seegers") in 1996, taking its species name directly from the Kalambo River basin in which it is endemic. It belongs to the family Mochokidae, the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes, and to the genus Chiloglanis, the suckermouth squeakers — a large group of small rheophilic catfish distributed across tropical Africa, each adapted to gripping rock in fast current with a modified, disc-like mouth.
The genus Chiloglanis is distinct from the loricariid "suckermouth catfish" of South America; the resemblance between the two groups is a case of convergent evolution, not relation — both independently evolved an oral sucker to hold station in flowing water. Chiloglanis kalambo has not been shuffled between historic genera in the way some older-described catfish have; it was erected within Chiloglanis from the outset and the Catalog of Fishes treats that placement as valid.
Morphology
Chiloglanis kalambo is minute by any catfish standard: FishBase records a maximum size of just 1.5 in total length. Like other members of the genus it has a flattened head and a ventral, disc-shaped sucker mouth used to grip rock surfaces against current, rather than a normal terminal catfish mouth. The body is naked — scaleless skin, as in essentially all catfish — and it carries the stiff, sharp dorsal and pectoral spines typical of Mochokidae; FishBase specifically notes these fins are sharp and the fish should be handled with care.
As with other squeakers the pectoral spines can be locked rigid, a defence against predators and a hazard to careless handling. Given the species' tiny adult size, that spine risk is more about damage to a net than injury to a keeper's hand, but the principle carries across the genus: move small Chiloglanis in a container of water rather than scooping with a net that can snag a locked spine.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Kalambo River basin, which straddles the Tanzania–Zambia border and drains into Lake Tanganyika near the spectacular Kalambo Falls. The type locality is the Kanyele River, a small southeastern tributary of the upper Kalambo, along the road from Sumbawanga to Mbala in western Tanzania.
FishBase describes the habitat as freshwater and benthopelagic in tropical rivers with rocks, boulders, small waterfalls and rapids — explicitly not quiet, still streams. This rheophilic (current-loving) preference is the defining fact about the species: it lives clamped to rock in fast, well-oxygenated water, the same kind of habitat that shapes its sucker mouth and flattened body. Detailed water chemistry for the Kalambo basin was not captured in the sources reviewed for this profile; treat any specific pH or hardness figure as unconfirmed rather than assumed.
Feeding
Chiloglanis kalambo is described only as omnivorous in the available literature, with no further detail on its wild diet. Its relatives in the genus are typical nocturnal benthic feeders, grazing algae, biofilm and small invertebrates off rock surfaces in the current they cling to, and there is no reason to expect this species differs.
In an aquarium setting a suckermouth squeaker of this kind would be expected to graze biofilm and take small sinking foods after dark, but no aquarium feeding record for this exact species was found in the cache — data is sparse, and any care advice here should be read as inferred from the genus rather than confirmed for C. kalambo specifically.
Mating
FishBase records the reproductive guild as oviparous with distinct pairing, but gives no further detail on courtship or spawning behaviour for this species. No aquarium spawning account was located in the sources reviewed.
Breeding
Beyond the oviparous, pair-forming classification noted above, breeding details for Chiloglanis kalambo are not documented in the available sources. Chiloglanis as a genus is essentially not established in home-aquarium breeding — these are specialist rheophilic fish that need strong, oxygen-saturated flow to thrive at all, and this particular species is additionally rare in the hobby, endemic to a single river basin, and Vulnerable in the wild. Treat any claim of home breeding as unconfirmed; the honest picture is that this species is not known to be bred in captivity.
In the aquarium
Chiloglanis kalambo is rarely if ever seen in the aquarium trade — PlanetCatfish notes that specialised care and breeding information for the species is limited, reflecting its scarcity outside its native Kalambo basin. Anyone who does encounter it should still respect the size trap in reverse: at a maximum of 1.5 in TL this is one of the smallest catfish species going, so it must never be housed with anything that could eat or bully it, and even modest tankmates can out-compete a fish this small for food.
Related Chiloglanis kept in the hobby (such as C. polypogon and C. bifurcus) need strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, and a bed of sand, gravel and smooth rocks to grip — essentially a rapids or riffle biotope rather than a still community tank, and this species should be assumed to need the same. As with all catfish, the skin is scaleless and therefore more sensitive to copper and many medications than a scaled fish, so any treatment should be dosed conservatively. The dorsal and pectoral spines are sharp; handle the fish gently and avoid tangling it in a net. It is a nocturnal fish and will be most active after lights-out.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chiloglanis kalambo as Vulnerable under criterion D2, an assessment from 31 January 2006. A D2 listing reflects a very restricted range and population that, while not currently in freaming decline, has a distribution small enough that any new threat (pollution, damming, habitat degradation) could rapidly drive further decline.
Restriction to the Kalambo River basin — a single system on the Tanzania–Zambia border — makes this species inherently vulnerable to any localised pressure on that basin, from water abstraction to sedimentation. Given how little of its aquarium care and breeding biology is documented, and its Vulnerable status, this is a species better left to its native rivers than collected for the hobby.
