Taxonomy & naming
Chiloglanis kerioensis was described in 2015 by Schmidt, Bart and Nyingi as one of two new suckermouth catfishes from Kenya, published in a paper on African suckermouth catfishes of the genus Chiloglanis (Siluriformes: Mochokidae) that also revised other Kenyan taxa in the group. The holotype, specimen NMK-FW-3959-1, is held at the National Museums of Kenya.
The species belongs to the family Mochokidae, the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes, and to Chiloglanis, a genus of small suckermouth species found across sub-Saharan Africa. The epithet kerioensis refers directly to the Kerio River, the type locality and the only river system in which the species is known to occur — it is, notably, the only suckermouth catfish (Chiloglanis) yet recorded from the Lake Turkana basin, making it a geographically isolated and narrowly distributed species.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Chiloglanis kerioensis has a flattened head and an oral sucker disc formed from modified lips and barbels, used to grip rock surfaces in current rather than to filter or manipulate food. The body is small and slender behind the disc, built for clinging and creeping over boulders rather than for open swimming.
Maximum recorded size is only about 1.5 in standard length, making this one of the smaller species even within a genus of small fish. As in all Mochokidae the skin is scaleless (naked), which is an important care consideration where medications are concerned — scaleless catfish are markedly more sensitive to copper-based and some other treatments than scaled fish, and dosing should be conservative.
Habitat
The species is known only from the upper Kerio River, part of the Lake Turkana drainage in Turkana County, northern Kenya. The Kerio is a roughly 249 mi river that rises near the equator in the Rift Valley highlands and flows north through a semi-tropical to arid landscape before reaching Lake Turkana; its lower reaches are markedly seasonal, running low or dry outside the rains.
Chiloglanis kerioensis occupies medium rapids near boulders — fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over rock and coarse substrate, a habitat type that favours a fish able to hold its position with a sucker mouth rather than by strong swimming alone. Recorded water conditions in the river are warm (around 84 °F) and distinctly alkaline (pH around 8.0), reflecting the mineral character of Rift Valley waters rather than the soft, acidic conditions often assumed for African streams. The species' benthopelagic habit ties it closely to this rapid, rocky microhabitat.
Feeding
As in other Chiloglanis, Chiloglanis kerioensis is best understood as a nocturnal benthic omnivore-grazer: it forages over rock surfaces for algae, biofilm, aquatic invertebrates and detritus, activity that is typical of the genus's rapids-dwelling members. Detailed dietary data specific to this species has not been published; the account here follows the general feeding ecology documented for the genus.
A fish adapted to grazing current-swept rock surfaces has little use for open-water foods; it depends on a constant film of algae and small invertebrates rather than large prey items, consistent with its very small adult size.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Chiloglanis kerioensis. The species was only formally described in 2015 from a small number of museum specimens, and field data on its reproductive biology from the wild Kerio River population is not available in the sources consulted.
Breeding
Chiloglanis kerioensis is not known to have been bred in captivity, and it does not appear to be established in the aquarium trade at all — the data available on this species come from its taxonomic description and river-basin records rather than from hobbyist accounts. As with many small rapids-dwelling Chiloglanis, reproduction likely depends on the strong, oxygen-rich flow of its native habitat, a condition difficult to replicate outside a specialised setup. Breeding mode should be considered unknown rather than assumed; nothing here should be read as egg-scattering behaviour confirmed for this species.
In the aquarium
Chiloglanis kerioensis is essentially unknown in the hobby — it is a narrow-range Kenyan endemic collected for scientific description rather than for trade, and no aquarium-keeping records were found. Any prospective keeper should treat it, hypothetically, as a demanding rapids specialist: strong current, high dissolved oxygen, rocky substrate for the sucker mouth to grip, and warm, alkaline water in the range recorded from the Kerio River (around 84 °F, pH near 8.0) rather than a generic soft, acidic community setup.
Two general Mochokidae care points still apply if this or a similar Chiloglanis is ever encountered: the skin is scaleless, so medications — copper treatments especially — should be dosed conservatively; and although this species is far too small to carry the locking spines of larger catfish in a way that threatens a keeper, gentle handling in a container rather than a net is still good practice with any Mochokidae. Given its tiny size and un-established status in the trade, this is not a species to seek out or stock casually.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chiloglanis kerioensis as Least Concern, an assessment made in 2022. This may understate its vulnerability in practice: the species is known only from a single river system feeding a closed, arid-zone lake, and the lower Kerio River itself runs seasonally, meaning the population's range is inherently narrow and tied to a specific, variable-flow habitat.
As an endemic restricted to one Rift Valley drainage, the species' long-term outlook depends on the health of the Kerio River and the wider Lake Turkana basin — water abstraction, sedimentation and changes to seasonal flow are the kinds of pressures that would matter most for a fish with nowhere else to go. There is no evidence of aquarium collection pressure on this species; its main conservation relevance is as a distinctive, geographically isolated component of the Lake Turkana basin's freshwater fauna.
