Chiloglanis longibarbis is a tiny suckermouth squeaker described in 2017 from the Upper Guinean forest streams of West Africa, one of nine new Chiloglanis species Schmidt and Friel documented in a single burst of discovery from a biodiversity hotspot that was still yielding new catfish taxa in the twenty-first century. Barely bigger than a fingernail, it clings to rocks in flowing water with an oral sucker disc and long, sensory maxillary barbels, and remains essentially unknown outside the taxonomic literature — a data-sparse endemic with no established place in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Chiloglanis longibarbis was described by Schmidt and Friel in 2017 in their paper "A Biodiversity Hotspot Heats Up: Nine New Species of Suckermouth Catfishes (Mochokidae: Chiloglanis) from Upper Guinean Forest Streams in West Africa," published in the journal Copeia. It belongs to the family Mochokidae, the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes, and to the genus Chiloglanis, the suckermouth squeakers — small, rheophilic catfish built to hold station on rocks in fast-flowing water using an oral disc rather than the barbel-fringed sucking mouth of a pleco.

The species was one of nine described together in the same paper, reflecting how much cryptic diversity remained undocumented in Upper Guinean forest streams even in recent years. As with the rest of the genus, the Catalog of Fishes treats Chiloglanis as the valid, unrevised placement; there is no older combination to correct here since the description is recent and the genus itself has been stable.

Morphology

The species is described from a holotype female measuring 1.5 in standard length, roughly 1.5 in — a genuinely tiny catfish even by Chiloglanis standards, and the real adult size to plan around rather than assuming it stays smaller still. The head is depressed (flattened top to bottom), and the lateral line runs complete along the flank. Three pairs of barbels ring the head, and the maxillary pair is notably long relative to head length (about 38–44%), which is the character behind the species name.

The mouth is inferior and forms the oral sucker disc typical of the genus, used to grip rock surfaces in current rather than to browse algae the way a plecostomus does. Colouration is a medium brown across the back with yellow-buff to light brown mottling, fading to a cream-buff belly scattered with fine dark melanophores. The dorsal fin carries one spine and five soft rays, the adipose fin is moderate in size, and the caudal fin is forked with a longer lower lobe. Like all Chiloglanis and the wider Mochokidae, the skin is completely scaleless (naked), which matters directly for medicating the fish.

Habitat

Chiloglanis longibarbis is known from the Moa River drainage in the Upper Guinean forest region of West Africa, with the type locality at the Masseni River, roughly 3 miles north of Konesseridou, Guinea. This is classic rheophilic Chiloglanis habitat: clear, oxygen-rich, flowing forest streams over rock and gravel substrate, where the fish's sucker mouth lets it anchor against current on stone surfaces rather than being swept downstream.

Specific water chemistry data for this species has not been located; the cache is data-sparse here. As a rule, Upper Guinean forest-stream Chiloglanis are found in soft, warm, well-oxygenated running water typical of West African rainforest drainages, but exact pH and hardness figures for C. longibarbis specifically are not confirmed and should not be assumed.

Feeding

Chiloglanis as a genus are nocturnal benthic micro-predators and grazers, foraging over rock surfaces after dark for aquatic invertebrate larvae, small invertebrates, algae and biofilm, and detritus caught in the current — a lifestyle consistent with the sucker-disc mouth built for gripping rock in flowing water rather than sifting soft substrate.

In a hypothetical aquarium setting a fish of this build would be expected to take sinking foods and biofilm/algae growth offered after lights-out, following the pattern typical of small rheophilic Chiloglanis, but this has not been documented for C. longibarbis itself and should be treated as a genus-level inference rather than a confirmed account.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Chiloglanis longibarbis. The species is known only from its original taxonomic description and a handful of museum specimens; nothing has been published on how wild fish pair up or where eggs are deposited. Given the genus's rheophilic, rock-clinging habits, spawning in related Chiloglanis is generally assumed to occur over or under rocks in flowing water, but this has not been confirmed for this species and should not be stated as fact.

Breeding

Breeding has not been achieved or documented for Chiloglanis longibarbis in the aquarium. This is an obscure, recently described, single-drainage West African endemic with essentially no aquarium history, and there is no record of captive spawning, parental care, or a reliable breeding method for this species. Do not assume open-water egg-scattering or any other mode without evidence; honestly, the mode is simply unknown.

In the aquarium

Chiloglanis longibarbis has no established presence in the aquarium hobby — it is not known to be traded, and this account is built from its taxonomic description rather than any keeper experience. Anyone attempting to keep a fish matching this profile should still respect its real size: at roughly 1.5 in it is genuinely tiny, but it is also a specialised rheophilic species that needs strong current and pristine, oxygen-rich water to hold station on rock, not a sedentary community-tank fish.

Two care points follow from its biology regardless of the lack of hobby history. First, like all Mochokidae it is scaleless (naked-skinned), so it would be expected to be sensitive to copper and many medications — dose conservatively. Second, while Chiloglanis species carry the stiff, serrated, locking pectoral/dorsal spines typical of the family, a fish this small poses little practical risk to a keeper's hands; even so, moving any mochokid in a container rather than a net avoids tangling those spines. It is presumed nocturnal like its relatives and would need cover during the day.

Conservation

Chiloglanis longibarbis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. It is known only from its Moa River drainage type locality in the Upper Guinean forest region of Guinea, making it a narrow-range, single-drainage endemic of a type that is common among the nine species described together in its 2017 paper.

The Upper Guinean forest region is a recognised global biodiversity hotspot under sustained pressure from deforestation, agricultural conversion, and mining, all of which degrade the clear, flowing forest streams this genus depends on. With no population data and no formal assessment, the conservation status of this species is genuinely unknown rather than reassuring, and its long-term security is tied to the health of a forest-stream system with a documented history of habitat loss.
