Taxonomy & naming
Chiloglanis lukugae was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1944. It sits in the family Mochokidae — the squeakers and upside-down catfishes of Africa — within the large genus Chiloglanis, whose many small, rheophilic, suckermouth species are notoriously difficult to tell apart and remain in need of revision; FishBase itself notes that only type specimens can currently be identified with certainty.
The genus name Chiloglanis combines Greek roots referring to the lip and to a catfish, a nod to the sucker-like modified lips that define the genus. The species epithet lukugae refers to the Lukuga River, the channel through which Lake Tanganyika drains westward into the Congo system — the drainage where the type material originated. No historical placement under a different genus is recorded in the cached sources; the species has been treated in Chiloglanis since its description.
Morphology
Chiloglanis lukugae is a small catfish, reaching only about 3.5 in standard length, well within the modest size range typical of the genus. Like other squeakers it has a flattened head and a scaleless, naked body, and like all Chiloglanis its mouth is modified into a ventral suckermouth formed from thickened, disc-like lips, an adaptation for gripping rock and stone in current rather than for typical benthic browsing.
As in the wider family Mochokidae, Chiloglanis species carry sharp, serrated dorsal and pectoral spines with a locking mechanism; venom has been documented in at least one congener (C. camarabounyi) and is presumed present as a family-level trait across the genus, so C. lukugae should be handled with the same caution. Mochokid catfishes are also known for producing audible stridulation — squeaking sounds made by rasping the locked pectoral spines against the shoulder girdle.
Habitat
This species is native to the upper Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with records from the Luvua River drainage (its type locality), the Rusizi River, the middle Congo including the Wagenia Falls area, the upper Kwango drainage extending into Angola, and tributaries of Lake Tanganyika shared between the DRC and Tanzania. This is a wide but fragmented spread across fast-flowing tropical African river systems.
Chiloglanis lukugae is a benthic, rheophilic fish, living on rocky lake shores and in the stony, rapid stretches of streams and rivers rather than in slow or still water. Its suckermouth is the key adaptation for this lifestyle, letting it hold station against current on rock surfaces where many other fish cannot. Specific pH and temperature data were not captured in the cache; as a tropical African rheophilic species it should be kept in warm, well-oxygenated, flowing water, but exact figures should not be assumed without further confirmation.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data for Chiloglanis lukugae specifically was not found in the cache. Chiloglanis species in general graze biofilm, algae and associated small invertebrates from rock surfaces using their suckermouth, foraging as benthic micro-predators and grazers along stony, current-swept substrate, largely after dark like most mochokids.
In the aquarium, a diet reflecting this rock-grazing habit is the safest approach: sinking algae wafers and vegetable-based foods supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrate foods, offered after lights-out so this small, likely nocturnal fish is not out-competed by more active tankmates. Data is sparse for this species, so feeding should be adjusted by observation rather than assumed to match a generalist omnivore.
Mating
FishBase records Chiloglanis lukugae as oviparous with distinct pairing behaviour during breeding, but the cached sources give no further detail on courtship, spawning site selection or triggers for this species. Unlike Synodontis multipunctatus, there is no indication of any parasitic or unusual reproductive strategy here — pairing before egg-laying is the only behavioural note on record.
Given the rheophilic, rock-clinging habits of the genus, spawning is likely tied to sheltered spots among rocks and stones in flowing water, but this is inference from the genus rather than a confirmed observation for C. lukugae, and it should be treated as such.
Breeding
There is no record in the cached sources of Chiloglanis lukugae being bred in the home aquarium, and no husbandry account of a successful spawn. This is consistent with the genus as a whole: most Chiloglanis are little-studied, rarely traded rheophilic specialists rather than established aquarium breeding projects, and specific parental-care behaviour beyond the noted pairing before spawning is not documented.
Until more is known, breeding for this species should be considered essentially unachieved in captivity. Aquarists should not expect to replicate reproduction without first securing strong flow, oxygenation and rocky cover matching its wild rapids habitat, and even then success is undocumented.
In the aquarium
Chiloglanis lukugae stays genuinely small at around 3.5 in standard length, so unlike many catfish in this atlas it does not fall into the classic size trap — but it does carry the other hallmarks of the family. It is scaleless, so it is medication-sensitive in the same way as loaches, puffers and eels: dose copper and other treatments conservatively, often at half strength. It also carries locking, serrated dorsal and pectoral spines, presumed venomous as in its relative C. camarabounyi, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted to avoid tangling and injury to the keeper.
Because it is an obligate rock-clinging rheophile, a tank for this species needs strong current, high oxygenation, and a bed of smooth rock and stone to graze and grip rather than soft substrate or still water — a river-rapid biotope rather than a general community setup. It is a poorly known, rarely if ever seen in the aquarium trade, so most of what would normally be practical care advice (feeding response, compatibility, exact water chemistry) remains undocumented for this specific species; treat generic Chiloglanis husbandry as a starting point, not a confirmed formula.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chiloglanis lukugae as Near Threatened.
Its range spans several separate Congo basin drainages and Lake Tanganyika tributaries across the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola and Tanzania. As with many small, obscure rheophilic catfishes, it is not meaningfully present in the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not considered a driver of concern; habitat degradation and damming of Congo basin rivers are the more relevant long-term risks for rheophilic specialists in this genus generally.
