Taxonomy & naming
Chiloglanis mongoensis was described by Schmidt & Barrientos in 2019 in Zootaxa, as a new suckermouth catfish in the family Mochokidae from the Rio Mongo in Equatorial Guinea. It belongs to the genus Chiloglanis, the suckermouth squeakers, a large African genus of small, flow-adapted mochokids distinguished from other squeaker genera (such as Synodontis) by an oral sucker disc used to grip rock in current.
As a species described in 2019, Chiloglanis mongoensis has no older synonyms or historical combinations to correct — it has always been placed in Chiloglanis. The species epithet mongoensis refers directly to the type locality, the Rio Mongo. Genus-level placement follows the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the standing authority for valid names in Siluriformes.
Morphology
The holotype, an adult male, measured just 1 in standard length — Chiloglanis mongoensis is among the smallest members of an already small-bodied genus, and available data give no reason to expect it grows much beyond this size. Like other suckermouth squeakers it has a flattened head and a ventral oral disc modified into a sucker, used to anchor against bedrock in current rather than to feed by suction alone.
As in all catfishes in this family, the skin is scaleless (naked), a trait that carries directly into husbandry: scaleless fish are markedly more sensitive to copper-based and some other medications than scaled species, so treatment doses should be conservative if this fish is ever kept. Detailed fin-spine and colour-pattern description beyond the original diagnosis is not available from the cached sources; data is sparse for this recently described species.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Rio Mongo near Mosumu, Equatorial Guinea, in continental West-Central Africa. The type series was collected from bedrock cracks in the riverbed, consistent with the rock-clinging, current-adapted lifestyle typical of the genus Chiloglanis, whose members use their sucker mouth to hold position on stone in flowing water rather than drift in the water column.
Specific water chemistry data (temperature, pH, hardness) were not captured in the available sources for this species. Chiloglanis mongoensis is not established in the aquarium trade and there is no evidence it has ever been kept in captivity — this account exists to document a genuine, recently described species, not to recommend it as a fishkeeping subject. Should material ever reach hobbyists, the operative facts from its biology still apply: it is genuinely tiny (holotype 1 in SL), so it is not a candidate for the size trap in the usual sense, but it would need strong, oxygen-rich current over rock or bedrock-like decor to replicate its clinging, flow-adapted lifestyle, plus conservative dosing of any medication because its scaleless skin makes it copper- and med-sensitive like other naked catfishes. Any locking pectoral or dorsal spines typical of small mochokids should be handled the same way as in other squeakers — move the fish in a container rather than a net.
