Chiloglanis niloticus is a tiny suckermouth squeaker of the Nile and Niger river basins, built to cling to rock and gravel in fast-flowing water rather than to cruise open sand. At a maximum of about 2 in standard length it is one of the smallest members of the family Mochokidae, and its whole body — a flattened head, an oral sucker disc, and stiff pectoral spines — is a set of adaptations for staying put in current, not for the sedate community-tank life most catfish keepers picture.

Taxonomy & naming

Chiloglanis niloticus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1900. It belongs to the family Mochokidae, the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes, a family of roughly 180 species in which about two-thirds sit in the single large genus Synodontis; Chiloglanis is a separate, much smaller genus of small, rock-clinging suckermouth species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the standing authority for the valid combination Chiloglanis niloticus.

The genus name Chiloglanis derives from Greek roots referring to the lip and to a catfish-like form, a nod to the fleshy oral disc that gives the genus its distinctive sucker-mouth. The species epithet niloticus is straightforward Latin/Greek for "of the Nile", naming the river system in which it was first collected, though the species is now also known from the Niger basin.

Morphology

Chiloglanis niloticus is a genuinely small catfish, reaching only about 2 in standard length — this is not a species that grows into anything bulky, and keepers should not expect the size trajectory of the larger Mochokidae. Like its relatives it is a squeaker: stiff, serrated pectoral fin spines can be locked and rasped to produce an audible sound, and in Mochokidae these spines carry venom glands capable of inflicting a painful wound, so the fish should always be moved in a container rather than netted.

The skin, as in all catfish of this family, is scaleless, which makes it more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many standard treatments — dose conservatively. Its most distinctive feature is the oral sucker disc formed from the modified lips, which the fish uses to grip rock and gravel surfaces in current, functionally similar to (though not related to) the sucking mouths seen in hillstream loaches and some plecos.

Habitat

This species is native to the Nile and Niger river basins in tropical Africa, where it lives as a rheophilic (current-loving) fish over rocky, gravelly and sandy substrates in flowing water rather than still pools. It is benthopelagic, holding position near the bottom and using its oral disc to anchor itself against the current.

Specific water chemistry for the wild population is not well documented in the sources available; as a fast-water riverine African species it should not be assumed to need the soft, acidic blackwater conditions associated with some other African catfish, nor should it be treated as a still-water fish. Data on precise temperature and pH range is sparse — care should follow the general parameters of flowing, well-oxygenated tropical African river water until better data is available.

Feeding

Chiloglanis niloticus is an omnivorous benthic forager, recorded with a trophic level around 3.1 on FishBase, consistent with a diet of small invertebrates, algae and organic material grazed or picked from rock and gravel surfaces in its current-swept habitat. As with most Mochokidae it likely forages more actively after dark.

In the aquarium this points to a diet of sinking pellets, small frozen foods and algae-based foods, offered ideally in the evening or after lights-out so a small, retiring fish is not out-competed by more active tankmates. Given its tiny adult size, portions and prey items should be scaled down accordingly.

Mating

Chiloglanis niloticus is oviparous with external fertilization, and distinct pairing has been observed, with spawning taking place in flowing water rather than over open ground. This fits the species' rheophilic lifestyle: courtship and egg deposition are tied to the same rocky, current-swept habitat the fish occupies day to day.

Beyond pairing behavior and the preference for flowing water at spawning, details of courtship — clutch size, egg placement, and how long the process takes — are not well documented in the sources available for this species.

Breeding

Breeding in the aquarium is not well documented for Chiloglanis niloticus. Maturity size, clutch size, hatching time and captive lifespan are all sparse in the available literature, and there is no record here of the species being routinely bred in home aquaria. This is consistent with the wider pattern in small rheophilic Mochokidae, whose reproduction depends on strong, well-oxygenated current that is difficult to replicate in a standard tank.

Unlike the bubble-nesting armored catfishes or the cuckoo brood-parasitism of Synodontis multipunctatus, there is no evidence of any specialized parental-care strategy in this species beyond simple egg-scattering in flowing water with no described guarding behavior. Prospective breeders should treat this as an open question rather than assume a known, repeatable protocol.

In the aquarium

Chiloglanis niloticus stays genuinely small at around 2 in SL, so tank size is not the size-trap risk it is with many catfish — but replicating its current-loving lifestyle is the real challenge. It needs strong water flow and well-oxygenated conditions with rocky and gravelly surfaces to grip, rather than the calm, sandy-bottomed setup typical of many small African catfish. Without adequate current it will not thrive.

As with all Mochokidae, its skin is scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper and many medications, so treatments should be dosed conservatively. Its pectoral spines lock and can carry venom glands, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted. It is best kept in a river-biotope setup with other small, current-adapted fish, and given its size and retiring habits it is easily overlooked or out-competed in a mixed community — a specialist's fish rather than a generalist community catfish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Chiloglanis niloticus as Data Deficient (assessed 2019), meaning there is not enough information on its population, range, or trends to determine a conservation category. It is known only from the Nile and Niger river basins.

As a small, specialized, rheophilic species restricted to specific flowing-water habitats, it is potentially vulnerable to the same broad pressures facing African river systems — damming, siltation, and habitat alteration — but no species-specific assessment data is available to confirm population impact. Data Deficient status here should be read honestly: an assessment gap, not a clean bill of health.
