Taxonomy & naming
Carinotetraodon lorteti was described by Gabriel Tirant in 1885 from specimens collected at Thu-dâu-môt, what is now southern Vietnam, under the original combination Tetrodon lorteti. For most of the twentieth century the species was known as Tetraodon lorteti; the genus Tetraodon was at that time applied loosely to freshwater puffers across Asia and Africa alike. A subsequent revision recognised that the true Tetraodon is an African genus, and the Asian dwarf puffers were placed in Carinotetraodon — a reclassification formalised in the literature around 2013 and followed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer), which is the authority for valid names used on this site.
The genus name Carinotetraodon refers to the carina or keel — the inflatable ventral ridge that male dwarf puffers erect during courtship and display — combined with the familiar tetraodontid root (Greek tetra, four; odon, tooth, referencing the four fused beak plates). The species epithet lorteti honours Louis Charles Émile Lortet (1836–1909), a French physician, zoologist and naturalist based in Lyon who published extensively on Near Eastern fauna; Tirant named the fish in his honour.
At the time of writing, no subspecies or geographic morphs of C. lorteti have been formally described, though the species co-occurs in parts of its range with the closely related C. irrubesco and C. salivator, and misidentification among hobbyist-imported Mekong puffers is common.
Morphology
Carinotetraodon lorteti is a compact, rounded puffer reaching 2–2.5 in standard length (SL) at maximum, with the typical tetraodontid profile: a large, blunt head, a deep body that tapers sharply to the caudal peduncle, pectoral fins used as the primary means of station-keeping and slow manoeuvre, and no pelvic fins. The four fused teeth form a hard, parrot-like beak divided by a mid-line seam into an upper and lower pair of plates — a structure that never stops growing throughout the fish's life and must be worn down by hard food.
Sexual dimorphism is conspicuous. Males develop a fleshy, inflatable keel along the ventral midline and a raised dorsal crest — the characters from which the genus name derives — and display a complex pattern of brown-green mottling over a paler ground, with vivid red irises (giving the fish its English name, the redeye puffer) and intense colour changes when aroused. Females are plainly patterned, lacking the crest and keel, and generally remain smaller and rounder-bodied when gravid. Both sexes can inflate the body with water as a defensive response, though this is stressful and should never be provoked deliberately.
Habitat
The redeye puffer is native to the lower Mekong basin, spanning Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, and to the Chao Phraya watershed of central Thailand — a distribution centred on the great lowland river systems of mainland Southeast Asia. Within those systems it occupies slow-moving to standing freshwater habitats: shady forest streams, minor tributaries, seasonal backwaters and floodplain pools with abundant aquatic or overhanging vegetation and soft substrates.
FishBase characterises it as a benthopelagic species of standing or sluggish water, consistent with field observations of it in densely vegetated, shaded marginal habitats rather than the main river channel. The water parameters recorded across its range span a wide band: temperature 68–82 °F, pH 5.0–7.5, and hardness from soft to moderately hard (approximately 18–215 ppm, equivalent to roughly 1–12 °dH). In practice it most frequently occurs in the warmer, soft and slightly acidic to neutral end of that range — conditions produced by leaf litter, shaded soil and slow drainage through forested lowlands.
Feeding
Like all tetraodontids, C. lorteti is a specialised molluscivore and hard-prey predator. In the wild its diet centres on shelled invertebrates — small snails, freshwater crabs and other crustaceans — along with aufwuchs (the community of algae, periphyton and micro-invertebrates scraped from hard surfaces). It supplements these with softer items such as worms and small insects. The hard beak is the key adaptation: it gives leverage to crack shells that are impenetrable to most small fishes, and the crushing bite is powerful relative to the fish's size.
In the aquarium, shelled prey are not optional — they are essential. The beak grows continuously and must be abraded by hard food; a puffer fed only bloodworms and other soft items will develop an overgrown beak within weeks or months, which then requires manual trimming under anaesthesia. A diet built around live or frozen snails (pond snails, ramshorns), small cockles, clams and similar shellfish keeps the beak in trim. Bloodworms, earthworm sections and frozen foods make useful supplements but should not be the primary diet.
Mating
Carinotetraodon lorteti breeds as a substrate or plant spawner in which the male plays the leading role in display and post-spawning care. Males are seasonally or conditionally territorial and court females with an elaborate visual display: the dorsal crest is raised, the ventral keel inflated, and the body coloration intensifies — patterns whose combined effect signals male quality and readiness to spawn. A receptive female will approach and the pair manoeuvres together among fine-leaved plants or moss.
The male's crest and keel coloration, unique among the Carinotetraodon species, suggests that intrasexual competition among males and female mate choice are both significant selective pressures. Where multiple males are present they will fight — sometimes severely — for access to spawning sites and females; in the confines of an aquarium, multiple males together result in serious injury. A single male with one or two females, or a true pair, is the only practical arrangement for breeding attempts.
Breeding
Spawning has been documented in aquaria and follows a consistent pattern. The female deposits semi-adhesive eggs low among fine vegetation — Java moss and similar fine-leaved plants are the preferred substrate — and the male then guards the clutch, fanning and attending the eggs through the incubation period of roughly 60–72 hours until hatching. Fry become free-swimming within a few days of hatching.
The male's guarding role is active: he positions himself near the eggs and drives away intruders, including the female once spawning is complete. A separate breeding tank of around 15 US gal, furnished with dense Java moss or similar planting and a gentle sponge filter (to avoid fry loss to suction), gives the best chance of success. Water should be soft and slightly acidic (pH 6.0–6.5), warm (79–82 °F). Parents should be removed as soon as the male ceases to guard, since both adults will eat the fry. First foods for the free-swimming fry are infusoria and freshly hatched Artemia nauplii; growth to a juvenile stage takes several weeks.
In the aquarium
The redeye puffer is a fish for the dedicated specialist rather than the community aquarist. It is aggressive toward conspecifics and other species — a characteristic fin-nipper — and is almost always best kept alone or with one or two females to a single male. Mixing it with community fish invites harassment of slower or longer-finned tankmates and can also result in the puffer itself being attacked if housed with fin-nippers. A dedicated species tank of at least 20 US gal for a single individual, or larger for a pair, with dense planting of fine-leaved plants (Java moss, Ceratophyllum, Rotala) is the standard approach.
Beak maintenance is the keeper's most important husbandry responsibility. Shelled invertebrates — live pond snails, ramshorn snails, small cockles — must be offered several times weekly; a puffer on soft-food-only diets develops an overgrown beak that may need to be trimmed by a veterinarian using a topical anaesthetic. Filtration must be robust: puffers are messy eaters that produce heavy waste, and water quality deteriorates quickly without strong mechanical filtration and regular water changes.
As scaleless fish, puffers have no true scales and reduced gill-cover protection; they are sensitive to medications and must never be treated with copper-based remedies. Dosing of any medication should be conservative. Puffers should also never be deliberately induced to inflate or lifted out of water — the defensive inflation draws water into the body cavity and, out of water, air instead, which can be fatal. The skin and organs of tetraodontids carry tetrodotoxin; while this poses no risk during normal aquarium keeping, damaged or dead fish should be handled with care and never consumed.
Conservation
Carinotetraodon lorteti is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2020 assessment), reflecting its broad distribution across the lower Mekong basin and Chao Phraya watershed and an absence of evidence of major range-wide population decline. It is relatively widely encountered within its native river systems, and collection pressure from the aquarium trade — while present — is not considered the primary conservation concern.
The longer-term pressures on C. lorteti are those shared by most lowland freshwater fish in mainland Southeast Asia: large-scale dam construction on the Mekong and its tributaries is altering flood pulse dynamics and blocking fish movements; deforestation and agricultural expansion degrade the shaded, slow-water marginal habitats the species prefers; and pollution from agriculture, aquaculture and urban areas affects water quality across much of its range. The Mekong basin in particular faces intensifying hydropower development that affects connectivity between the river's seasonal habitats. These pressures warrant continued monitoring even for species currently assessed as Least Concern.
