Hemidoras morrisi is a slender, naked-skinned thorny catfish of the upper Amazon basin, described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1925 from specimens collected at Iquitos, Peru. Reaching around 5.5 in standard length, it is a modestly sized member of the family Doradidae — the South American thorny catfishes — equipped with a row of bony lateral scutes, stiff locking pectoral and dorsal spines, and soft, scaleless skin that makes it more sensitive to copper and many aquarium medications than scaled fish. In the wild it forages nocturnally on the river floor for invertebrates and small organic matter; in an aquarium it spends the day tucked inside driftwood or caves, emerging after lights-out to pick at sinking foods.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemidoras morrisi was formally described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1925 in his comprehensive review of the Doradidae, published in the Transactions of the American Philosophical Society (volume 22, no. 5, pp. 280–365). The holotype, catalogued as CAS 52130 at the California Academy of Sciences, was collected at Iquitos in the upper Amazon of Peru. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Hemidoras morrisi as the valid combination.

The genus Hemidoras belongs to the family Doradidae, the thorny catfishes, a South American family characterised by a row of ossified lateral scutes armed with hooks that run along each flank. The genus name Hemidoras means roughly 'half thorny' in Greek (hemi-, half + doras, hide or thorny catfish), distinguishing it from closely related genera by aspects of its scute armature. The species epithet morrisi honours Percival Morris, who served as Eigenmann's assistant and interpreter during fieldwork in Iquitos and contributed materially to the collection of specimens on which the 1925 monograph was based.

Morphology

Like other doradids, Hemidoras morrisi has a broad, flattened head, a tapering body, three pairs of barbels (one long maxillary pair flanking the upper jaw and two shorter mandibular pairs), and a moderately forked caudal fin. Running along each flank is the family's diagnostic feature: a longitudinal row of bony lateral scutes, each typically bearing a posterior hook or spine that gives the doradids their common name, thorny catfishes. The dorsal and pectoral fins are each fronted by a stiff, serrated spine that can be locked erect — a defence mechanism that makes these fish difficult to remove from a net and capable of jabbing a keeper.

Maximum recorded size is approximately 5.5 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase, with other sources citing 5.5 in SL; this is an adult measurement, not a juvenile size. The skin between and beneath the scutes is naked — there are no scales — which has direct care implications (see "In the aquarium"). Overall coloration is a muted brown-grey, which provides effective camouflage against sandy and leaf-littered substrates.

Habitat

Hemidoras morrisi is native to the Amazon basin, with records from Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, and a type locality at Iquitos on the upper Peruvian Amazon. It inhabits warm, slow to moderately flowing lowland rivers and associated flooded zones, areas characterised by soft or sandy substrates, abundant leaf litter and submerged woody debris.

Water conditions in these Amazonian habitats tend toward the warm, soft and slightly acidic to neutral: temperatures in the range of 72–77 °F and pH around 6.5–7.0 are reported for this species, consistent with the upper Amazon's chemistry. This is not an extreme blackwater specialist but a fish of the warm lowland mainstream and its tributaries, where soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions prevail.

Feeding

Hemidoras morrisi is a nocturnal benthic omnivore and micro-predator. In the wild it forages the river floor after dark, picking up aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — along with organic detritus and plant matter.

In the aquarium it will accept high-quality sinking pellets and wafers, frozen or thawed bloodworms and brine shrimp, small earthworms and other benthic invertebrate foods. Because it is most active after the lights go off, feeding late in the evening or after lights-out is advisable, especially in a community tank where more active daytime fish might out-compete it. Blanched vegetables and algae wafers can supplement the diet usefully.

Mating

Spawning behaviour in Hemidoras morrisi is poorly documented in the scientific literature, as is typical for most small Amazonian doradids that are not widely kept or bred in captivity. Aquarium reports suggest that a cool-water temperature-drop trigger — lowering the water to around 64 °F with a large water change, followed by vigorous aeration — can stimulate spawning activity, mimicking the onset of the Amazonian wet season when cool, oxygenated floodwater enters the river system.

Accounts describe a ratio of approximately two males to one female as favourable for inducing spawning, though reliably sexing the fish outside of the breeding season is not straightforward. Females are generally broader in the body when gravid. This kind of cool-trigger seasonal spawning pattern is consistent with other lowland South American catfish that breed during the seasonal flood pulse.

Breeding

Breeding Hemidoras morrisi in captivity is rarely reported and must be considered an unusual achievement rather than a routine aquarium prospect. The limited accounts available describe eggs laid in clumps, with fry hatching approximately three to four days after spawning. First foods for the fry are reported to include newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) and microworms from around day six or seven.

No parental guarding behaviour has been described for this species in available sources, and the precise breeding mode — whether eggs are scattered freely, deposited in a cavity, or guarded in any way — has not been confirmed from careful observation. Given the general scarcity of breeding records, hobbyists interested in attempting spawning should treat the cool water-change and aeration trigger as a starting point rather than a proven protocol, and document outcomes carefully. The species is not commercially bred at scale.

In the aquarium

Hemidoras morrisi is a manageable catfish for a hobbyist prepared to accommodate its nocturnal habits and need for appropriate water conditions. An adult reaches roughly 5.5 in SL — a real adult size, not a juvenile measurement — so a tank of at least 39.5 in in length (approximately 55 US gal) is appropriate for a small group of three to five individuals, which is a more natural social unit than a singleton. A soft or fine-grained sandy substrate, pieces of driftwood, smooth rocks and a generous depth of leaf litter replicate the Amazonian floor habitat and give the fish places to retreat during the day.

Two care points are non-negotiable. First, the skin is scaleless and naked between the bony scutes: like loaches and pufferfish, this species is more sensitive to copper and many standard aquarium medications than a scaled fish, and a half-dose or scaleless-fish protocol is advisable whenever treatment is needed. Second, the pectoral and dorsal spines can lock erect and the scute hooks tangle in net mesh — always move this catfish in a smooth container or bag rather than a net, and handle it carefully to avoid a spine jab. Water conditions should be warm (72–77 °F), soft to moderately hard, and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–7.0), matching its upper Amazon home. Feed after lights-out with sinking pellets, frozen invertebrates and occasional vegetable matter.

Conservation

Hemidoras morrisi has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its range spans four Amazonian countries — Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru — and it is likely found across a broad extent of the upper Amazon basin rather than being restricted to a single river. The upper Amazon faces the pressures common to the basin as a whole: deforestation-driven sedimentation, water quality changes from agricultural and urban runoff, and continuing habitat alteration.

Aquarium demand for this species is modest, and wild-caught fish entering the trade are typically collected as bycatch alongside more commercially significant species. A formal IUCN assessment would be needed to evaluate current population trends. Until such an assessment is conducted the species cannot be categorised as threatened or secure.
