Taxonomy & naming
Hoplomyzon sexpapilostoma was described by Donald Taphorn and Antonio Marrero in 1990, in a paper on Venezuelan catfishes that also discussed the wider Hoplomyzontini. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, and to the genus Hoplomyzon, a small group of dwarf South American aspredinids. The Catalog of Fishes treats Hoplomyzon sexpapilostoma as the valid name; the original description in the Biodiversity Heritage Library remains the primary taxonomic reference and source for the type locality on the Río Orinoco, Venezuela.
The tribe Hoplomyzontini groups several genera of small, sand-dwelling banjo catfishes distinct from the larger, better-known Aspredo and Bunocephalus lineages. Within that tribe, H. sexpapilostoma is often noted as the largest of the genus Hoplomyzon — though at barely 1 in, "largest" is relative. As with much of Siluriformes, generic limits within Aspredinidae have been revised repeatedly; no old-combination synonyms are documented in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
Like other banjo catfishes, Hoplomyzon sexpapilostoma has the family's signature shape: a broad, flattened, disc-like head and forebody that tapers abruptly into a narrow, almost eel-like tail, giving the whole fish the outline of a banjo. The skin is naked and scaleless — banjo catfishes lack true scales, instead often bearing small tubercles or bony platelets in some genera, though Hoplomyzon is a smooth-skinned, cryptically coloured dwarf.
Maximum recorded size is just 1.5 in standard length (SL), making this one of the smallest catfishes in the atlas and, notably, the largest species within its own genus. Its scaleless skin means it should be treated as medication-sensitive, on par with loaches, puffers and eels — copper-based and many other treatments should be dosed conservatively, at half the labelled rate or less, if this species is ever kept and needs treatment.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela, with its type locality on the Río Orinoco itself. It lives buried in fine sand in the deep channels of medium to large streams, a lifestyle shared with many small aspredinids that spend the day hidden beneath the substrate with only eyes or barbels exposed, emerging to forage as light fades.
Water conditions at its native sites are slightly acidic and not too hard, with temperatures in the 68–77 °F (68–77 °F) range — mild, soft-to-neutral tropical river water rather than the blackwater extremes associated with some other South American catfishes. As a psammophilic (sand-dwelling) species restricted to a specific microhabitat within large river channels, it is rarely encountered even by targeted collecting.
Feeding
Hoplomyzon sexpapilostoma is a nocturnal benthic omnivore and micro-predator, in keeping with the general pattern for small aspredinids. It forages over and within the sand substrate, mostly after dark, taking small invertebrates, detritus and other minute food items sifted from the channel bed.
No aquarium feeding regime is documented for this species, as it is essentially absent from the hobby. Based on its foraging ecology and that of related banjo catfishes, a keeper would need to offer small sinking foods — fine pellets, frozen bloodworm or similar — after lights-out, since a fish this size and this nocturnal would be readily out-competed by more active tankmates during the day.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour for Hoplomyzon sexpapilostoma have not been documented in the sources available. What is known is a striking taxonomic detail: this species shows sexual dimorphism, and notably the pattern is reversed compared to most other banjo catfishes — though the specific external differences between the sexes are not detailed in the available literature.
In several Aspredinidae, breeding biology is unusual for catfish: some banjo catfish females carry fertilised eggs attached to the skin of the belly, via small fleshy stalks (cotylephores), through much of incubation. Whether Hoplomyzon shares this trait with its larger aspredinid relatives is not established for this species in the sources reviewed here — it should not be assumed without direct confirmation.
Breeding
Breeding in Hoplomyzon sexpapilostoma is poorly known, and no aquarium breeding records are documented. This is consistent with the wider pattern in Aspredinidae, where only a handful of species have had their reproduction observed in any detail, and captive breeding of the family's small, cryptic, sand-dwelling genera is essentially unrecorded.
Given the near-total absence of this species from the aquarium trade — most individuals evade collection entirely, living buried in sand in deep river channels — there is no realistic prospect of home breeding at present. Any care information for this species should be treated as provisional and extrapolated cautiously from its close relatives rather than from direct observation.
In the aquarium
Hoplomyzon sexpapilostoma is essentially unavailable in the hobby; aquarium-trade sources note that banjo catfishes of the Hoplomyzontini rarely enter the trade at all, typically escaping the fine nets used by fish collectors because of their tiny size and sand-burrowing habits. Anyone who does encounter this species should treat it as a specialist proposition, not a casual purchase.
Were it kept, tank conditions should mirror the wild habitat: a fine sand substrate deep enough for burrowing, slightly acidic and moderately soft water, and a stable 68–77 °F. Its naked, scaleless skin makes it medication-sensitive — dose copper and other treatments conservatively. At barely 1.5 in as an adult it is not a size-trap species in the usual sense, but its minute size and burrowing habit mean it is easily lost among coarser substrates, outcompeted by more active tankmates, or overlooked entirely; it is best suited to a dedicated nano species tank with only the gentlest companions, or none at all. As with any catfish carrying stiff pectoral spines, it should be moved in a container rather than netted.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Hoplomyzon sexpapilostoma as Least Concern, as of an assessment dated 2020. As a narrow-range endemic restricted to the Orinoco basin of Venezuela, its conservation status should nonetheless be watched alongside the broader pressures facing Orinoco river systems — water quality, sedimentation and habitat alteration — even though it is not currently classified as threatened.
Because the species is so rarely collected and so little studied, population trend data are limited; the Least Concern rating reflects its apparently wide occurrence within suitable sandy-channel habitat across the basin rather than detailed abundance monitoring.
