Megalodoras guayoensis is a large armoured thorny catfish endemic to the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela, reaching about 21 in in standard length — well over half a metre, and enough to make it a fish for a serious pond or public-aquarium display rather than a home tank. Megalodoras guayoensis was described by the Venezuelan ichthyologist Agustín Fernández-Yépez in 1968, with a type locality at Caño de Guayo, Delta Amacuro, Venezuela — the source of the specific epithet guayoensis. It belongs to the family Doradidae, the thorny or talking catfishes, a large South American group named for the bony lateral scutes running along the body and for the audible sounds many species produce.

The genus Megalodoras has shifted around in the older catfish literature, and species now placed here have at times been associated with other doradid genus names as the family's internal classification was revised. Because it is scaleless and plated rather than true-scaled, it should be treated as medication-sensitive; use conservative doses of copper-based treatments and other medications formulated for scaleless fish. Its dorsal and pectoral spines lock rigidly and are sharp enough to tangle in and tear a net, and can jab the handler, so it should always be moved in a container rather than netted. As a demersal river fish it appreciates a soft substrate and cover, and given its bulk, filtration and water volume need to be generous to handle its waste load. Tankmates must be too large to be swallowed.
