Hoplomyzon atrizona was described by the American ichthyologist George S. Myers in 1942. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the type locality as a brook tributary to the Río Zulia, at Estación Táchira, roughly 37 mi north of San Cristóbal, Venezuela, at about 492 ft elevation — squarely in the freshwater drainage that feeds Lake Maracaibo rather than the lake's brackish main body.
The species belongs to the genus Hoplomyzon, a small group within the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, so named for the flattened, guitar- or banjo-shaped outline of the head and forebody tapering into a slender tail. The Catalog of Fishes treats Hoplomyzon atrizona as a currently valid name, and there is no evidence in the available sources of it having been shuffled through an older genus.
Morphology
Like other banjo catfishes, Hoplomyzon atrizona has a broad, dorsoventrally flattened head and front body that narrows sharply into a long, slim caudal peduncle and tail, giving the whole animal its family's distinctive silhouette. The skin is naked — banjo cats have no true scales, though the body is often roughened by small tubercles or bony plating rather than smooth skin, and this scaleless condition carries directly into how the species should be medicated in captivity.

The type locality lies in the Río Zulia drainage at modest elevation, suggesting the species favours smaller, flowing freshwater tributaries over the open lake basin.
The wider Lake Maracaibo ecoregion has a tropical, semi-arid climate with reported annual water temperatures spanning roughly 61–79 °F across the system, and the lake itself is a mixed system where freshwater inflow meets mild salinity. Hoplomyzon atrizona, however, is a freshwater tributary species; detailed data on its exact stream conditions (substrate, flow, vegetation) beyond this general regional picture is sparse in the available sources.
Feeding

It is a naked-skinned, scaleless catfish like its relatives, so it should be treated as sensitive to copper-based medications and dosed conservatively if treatment is ever needed — the same caution applied to loaches, puffers and other scaleless fish.
As a nocturnal bottom-dweller from small freshwater tributaries, it would need fine sand substrate to allow burrowing or resting, plenty of leaf litter and driftwood for cover, and stable water quality; the wider region's water sits in a broad 61–79 °F range, but a specific target for this species has not been confirmed. Handle it gently and avoid netting where a container can be used instead, though at this size the fish's main vulnerability is being lost or harmed by rough handling rather than by locking spines. This is a species best regarded as a rarity for specialist keepers rather than a mainstream community fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Hoplomyzon atrizona as Vulnerable (VU), reflecting its status as a narrow-range endemic restricted to the Lake Maracaibo basin of Venezuela. A species confined to a small number of freshwater tributaries in a single lake system is inherently exposed to localised pressures — habitat degradation, water extraction, pollution and land-use change in the Maracaibo basin are the kinds of threats that typically drive this classification for similarly restricted South American catfishes.
