Taxonomy & naming
Ictalurus pricei was described by Cloudsley Rutter in 1896 and remains in the genus Ictalurus, the bullhead catfish family Ictaluridae, a lineage confined to North and Central America. The Catalog of Fishes treats Ictalurus pricei as the valid combination; it has not been shuffled into another genus the way many Old World catfish groups have been.
The genus name Ictalurus derives from Greek ichthys (fish) and aïlouros (cat), the same "cat-fish" root shared across the family. The species epithet pricei is a patronym, likely honoring a collector or naturalist associated with the original material; the common name "Yaqui catfish" instead points straight at its type locality and core range, the Rio Yaqui drainage of Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico.
Morphology
This is a substantial catfish: FishBase and the USGS both give a maximum length of 22.5 in total length, putting adults well into the size range of other North American ictalurids like the channel catfish it competes with. The body is elongate and robust, dark gray to nearly black across the back, fading to a whitish or grayish belly, with the flanks and back profusely speckled with fine dark spots — a pattern that helps distinguish it from smoother-flanked relatives.
Like all ictalurids it is scaleless, with smooth naked skin rather than scales or bony plates, which matters directly for medication dosing (see "In the aquarium"). It carries the family's signature stout, serrated, locking spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and each pectoral fin — spines that jam a net and can jab an unwary hand, so this fish should always be moved in a container rather than netted. The barbels are jet black, except for the pair on the chin, which are gray to whitish, a small but useful field mark.
Habitat
Ictalurus pricei is native to the Rio Yaqui and Rio Casas Grandes drainages of northwestern Mexico (Sonora and Chihuahua), part of the temperate Nearctic river systems that drain toward the Gulf of California. It historically ranged just north of the border into Arizona, where it was documented between 1899 and 1983 but is now considered extirpated from the United States.
It is a bottom-dwelling, demersal fish of small to medium rivers, favoring quiet stretches over sandy or rocky substrate rather than fast riffles. As a temperate-water ictalurid it experiences a real seasonal range rather than constant tropical warmth, and it does not want to be kept hot year-round; water in the low-to-mid 20s °C, cooling further outside the growing season, better reflects its native rivers than a heated tropical setup.
Feeding
The Yaqui catfish is a nocturnal, carnivorous predator that forages over the riverbed after dark, taking any fish, invertebrate, or other animal prey it can overpower and swallow. Like other large ictalurids it is not a fussy specialist so much as an opportunistic generalist with a big mouth and a big appetite.
Where it is kept under care, it accepts most usual foods — sinking pellets, whole or cut fish and prawn, and other meaty items — and does best on a varied diet. The practical consequence for any keeper is blunt: tankmates need to be too large for it to swallow, because at its real adult size this species will eat anything smaller that fits in its mouth.
Mating
Ictalurus pricei follows the cavity-spawning pattern typical of its family. Courting pairs seek out a sheltered hole or cavity along the riverbank — an undercut bank, a hollow log, or a gap among rocks — rather than broadcasting eggs into open water or building a nest on open substrate. Spawning takes place in late spring.
After the female deposits the egg mass in the chosen cavity, parental duties fall to the male. He remains at the nest to fan the eggs, keeping them clear of silt and oxygenated, and to guard against predators and disturbance through incubation.
Breeding
This is a cavity/burrow nester: the male selects and defends a hole, log cavity, or rock crevice, and after spawning he guards and fans the egg mass until it hatches, continuing to guard the fry until they disperse from the nest. Parental care rests entirely with the male, consistent with the wider ictalurid pattern seen in bullheads and channel catfish.
In practice this species is not a home-aquarium breeding project. What reproduction has been documented comes from wild river populations and conservation-linked propagation efforts tied to its endangered status, not from hobbyist tanks. Its large adult size and cavity-nesting requirements make natural spawning behavior essentially impossible to replicate outside a pond or large managed facility.
In the aquarium
Ictalurus pricei is rare to nonexistent in the aquarium trade, and for good reason: at a documented maximum of 22.5 in, this is a size-trap species that no home aquarium can responsibly house long-term, whatever size it might be offered at as a juvenile. Anyone who does encounter it should plan for a pond or a very large, dedicated system, not a display tank.
Were it kept, husbandry would follow standard ictalurid lines: a soft-acidic-blackwater setup would be wrong for it — this is a temperate-water fish that wants cooler, well-oxygenated conditions reflecting its Nearctic river home rather than constant tropical heat. Being scaleless, it is medication-sensitive in the same way loaches, puffers, and eels are, so copper-based and other treatments should be dosed conservatively. Its locking dorsal and pectoral spines mean it should be moved in a container rather than a net, and as a nocturnal fish it appreciates cover to retreat into during the day.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Ictalurus pricei as Endangered (2019 assessment). Its area of occupancy is under 311 mi², it is known from no more than five locations, and its population is in continuous decline — a species genuinely at risk rather than merely data-poor.
The core threats are loss and degradation of its historical river habitat, combined with competition and hybridization from the introduced channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), which has spread through its native drainages and interbreeds with it, eroding the genetic integrity of remaining wild populations. Its total disappearance from Arizona by the 1980s illustrates how quickly a range-restricted river endemic can be lost once an introduced congener and habitat pressure combine; the species now survives only in its Mexican range in the Rio Yaqui and Rio Casas Grandes drainages.
