Taxonomy & naming
Ictalurus spodius was described by Smith in 1987 from Pleistocene fossil material collected near Jocotepec, Jalisco, in central Mexico. It belongs to the family Ictaluridae, the North American catfishes, and to the genus Ictalurus, which today includes the widespread channel catfish (I. punctatus) and several bullheads and their relatives across North and Central America.
A systematic study of fossil Ictalurus from central Mexico (Journal of Paleontology) places I. spodius within the I. punctatus species group on the basis of skull and fin-spine osteology, indicating it is a close fossil relative of the modern channel catfish rather than a wholly separate lineage. As a fossil taxon it has no FishBase entry and no IUCN assessment; there is no evidence it survived into the modern fauna, and no living population is known. Data on this species is sparse beyond the original osteological description.
Morphology
Descriptions of Ictalurus spodius come from fossilized skeletal elements — chiefly skull bones and the stiff, serrated pectoral and dorsal fin spines typical of ictalurid catfishes — rather than from complete or soft-tissue specimens. These spine and skull characters are what allow it to be placed within the I. punctatus group and compared against other fossil and living Ictalurus from Mexico.
Because the fossil record for this species does not preserve external colour, skin texture, or complete body proportions, no reliable adult size or live appearance can be given. Like all ictalurids, living relatives in this genus have scaleless (naked) skin, a deeply forked tail in the punctatus group, and stout locking spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins — but these are inferences from its living relatives, not direct observations of I. spodius.
Habitat
The type material of Ictalurus spodius was recovered from Pleistocene deposits at Jocotepec, in the state of Jalisco, central Mexico — in or near the Lake Chapala basin, a region with a long history of freshwater fish fossils. This places the species in a Mesoamerican freshwater lake or river system during the Pleistocene, broadly consistent with the modern genus's North and Central American distribution.
No data exists on the water chemistry, depth, or seasonal conditions of its Pleistocene habitat beyond what can be inferred from the depositional setting. As an extinct species it has no current range, water requirements, or living population to describe.
Feeding
No direct evidence of diet exists for Ictalurus spodius; fossil material of this kind rarely preserves gut contents or unambiguous dental/feeding adaptations beyond general skull architecture. Living members of its species group, including the channel catfish, are opportunistic omnivore-to-piscivore feeders taking fish, invertebrates and organic matter, but extending that diet directly to this fossil species would be speculation rather than a documented fact.
Mating
Ictalurus spodius is known only from fossil skeletal remains, and no aspect of its reproductive behaviour, timing, or courtship can be documented from that material. Nothing about mating in this species is recorded in the available literature.
Breeding
There is no breeding record for Ictalurus spodius — it is an extinct Pleistocene species with no living population and was never kept or bred in captivity. Its modern relatives in the I. punctatus group (including the channel catfish) are cavity or gravel-nest spawners in which the male guards and fans the egg mass, typically in a burrow, undercut bank or hollow; this is the general pattern for the genus but is not a documented observation of I. spodius itself, which is known only from fossils.

Its fossil record is nonetheless a useful data point for understanding the deeper history of Ictaluridae in central Mexico, documenting that close relatives of the modern channel catfish inhabited the Lake Chapala region of Jalisco during the Pleistocene.
