Taxonomy & naming
Kryptopterus hesperius was described by Heok Hee Ng in 2002, part of a taxonomic revision that split the long-confused "glass catfish" of the aquarium trade into several distinct species. Before this work, fish now recognised as K. hesperius, K. vitreolus and other segregates were routinely sold under the single, now largely invalid name Kryptopterus bicirrhis, and much older aquarium literature still uses that name loosely for any transparent Kryptopterus. The Catalog of Fishes treats Kryptopterus hesperius as a valid species in the family Siluridae, the Old World sheatfishes.
The genus name Kryptopterus derives from Greek kryptos, "hidden", and pteron, "fin" or "wing", a reference to the vestigial, easily overlooked dorsal fin typical of the genus. The species epithet hesperius is Latin for "western", marking this species as the more westerly of the glass catfish species Ng described from Southeast Asia, distinguishing it geographically from its eastern relatives.
Morphology
Kryptopterus hesperius has the elongated, laterally compressed, almost knife-like body typical of glass catfish, tapering to a long, gently forked tail. The skin is entirely scaleless and, in undamaged, unstressed fish, remarkably transparent — the vertebral column, ribs and swim bladder are visible through the flanks, especially under side lighting. A single pair of long maxillary barbels extends from the upper jaw. The dorsal fin is reduced to a tiny, often barely visible ray or two, while the anal fin runs in a long, low fringe along most of the ventral length of the body, providing the gentle sculling motion the fish uses to hover in place.
FishBase records a maximum size of 10 in standard length for this species — a substantial catfish by the time it is mature, even though the juveniles sold in the aquarium trade are usually only 1–2 in. As in other Siluridae, the skin carries no scales and is comparatively delicate, which matters for both handling and medication.
Habitat
Kryptopterus hesperius is native to the Mae Klong River drainage of western Thailand, where it inhabits the open water of freshwater mainstream rivers, typically holding in loose aggregations over slow-to-moderate current. As a mid-water species it does not associate closely with the substrate, instead hanging just off the bottom or in open water where it can pick off small drifting prey.
Detailed water-chemistry data specific to this species is sparse, but Mae Klong drainage rivers are warm, lowland Southeast Asian waters; keepers should aim for stable, well-oxygenated conditions typical of the region rather than assuming any extreme of pH or hardness without direct evidence.
Feeding
In the wild, FishBase records the diet of Kryptopterus hesperius as insects and small shrimps, consistent with its role as a mid-water micro-predator that intercepts small drifting invertebrates rather than foraging on the bottom.
In the aquarium it should be offered small live or frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp are all well taken — and will generally accept fine dry or sinking foods once settled, though newly imported fish can be shy feeders. Because it is a slow, deliberate mid-water feeder, it is easily out-competed by faster tankmates and should be fed where it can reach the food without a scramble.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Kryptopterus hesperius specifically. Glass catfish in this genus are essentially never bred in the home aquarium, and the aquarium supply of this and related Kryptopterus species is wild-collected rather than farmed or captive-propagated. Larger relatives in the sheatfish family, such as Wallago and some Ompok, spawn in rivers on a seasonal cycle and are mostly produced by hatcheries rather than bred by hobbyists, but no comparable account exists for Kryptopterus.
Breeding
There is no established protocol for breeding Kryptopterus hesperius in captivity, and it should not be expected to spawn in a home aquarium. This is consistent with the genus as a whole: glass catfish are shy, schooling, open-water fish whose reproductive biology has not been worked out in aquarium conditions, and virtually all specimens in the trade are wild-caught from Southeast Asian rivers rather than tank-raised.
Keepers should treat this species' continued availability as dependent on wild populations and sustainable collection rather than on any captive-breeding program, and should not assume that any spawning-like behaviour observed in a home tank represents genuine reproduction.
In the aquarium
Kryptopterus hesperius is sold small — often only a few centimetres — but FishBase gives a real maximum size of 10 in SL, well beyond what many keepers expect from a "glass catfish" bought as a juvenile; plan tank size and long-term stocking around the adult, not the shop specimen. It is a shoaling fish that becomes stressed and loses its prized transparency (turning cloudy or blotchy) when kept alone or in poor conditions, so it should always be kept in a group in a mature, well-established, heavily planted aquarium with gentle filtration and stable water quality.
Because it is scaleless, like other naked-skinned catfishes it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and should be dosed conservatively, ideally at reduced strength, when treating disease. It has no locking spines of concern and is not aggressive, but its slow, deliberate feeding style means it does poorly with fast or boisterous tankmates that out-compete it for food. Choose calm, similarly-scaled companions and avoid nipping species, since a stressed glass catfish is quick to show it.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List has not evaluated Kryptopterus hesperius, so it currently carries a status of Not Evaluated rather than a formal threat category. FishBase reports medium resilience with an estimated minimum population doubling time of 1.4 to 4.4 years and low vulnerability to fishing pressure, suggesting the species is not intrinsically fragile, but no dedicated conservation assessment has been made.
As the aquarium trade in this species relies entirely on wild collection from the Mae Klong drainage rather than captive breeding, ongoing pressure on Thai lowland rivers from damming, pollution and habitat conversion is the main long-term concern, even in the absence of a formal Red List assessment.
