Taxonomy & naming
Kryptopterus dissitus was described by Singapore-based ichthyologist Heok Hee Ng in 2001, in Folia Zoologica 50(3): 197–200, as part of a revision that split the long-confused "Kryptopterus limpok" complex into several distinct species. It belongs to the family Siluridae, the Old World sheatfishes, alongside the true glass catfishes, Wallago and Silurus. The Catalog of Fishes recognises Kryptopterus dissitus as a valid species.
The genus itself has had an unstable history: species now placed in Kryptopterus were historically shuffled through the old catch-all genus Silurus before the modern Siluridae genera were separated out, and molecular work (Bornbusch, 1995) has shown Kryptopterus as traditionally defined to be polyphyletic — a grouping of convenience rather than a single natural lineage. The specific epithet dissitus is Latin for "separate" or "distinct", chosen by Ng to flag this species' morphological separation from its close relatives within the limpok group.
Morphology
Kryptopterus dissitus shows the classic sheatfish silhouette: a long, laterally compressed, scaleless body, a flattened head, an underslung mouth and a single pair of long maxillary barbels. Like many of its relatives it carries reduced pigmentation, giving live fish a pale, faintly translucent cast rather than the near-total transparency of the true glass catfish, Kryptopterus vitreolus.
Maximum recorded size is 7 in standard length (FishBase), noticeably larger than the diminutive glass catfish sold in the aquarium trade but modest for the Siluridae as a whole, which includes species reaching well over a metre. As in all Kryptopterus the skin is naked and scaleless, which has direct consequences for medication sensitivity (see "In the aquarium").
Habitat
Kryptopterus dissitus is native to the Mekong River drainage in mainland Southeast Asia, one of the world's most species-rich river systems for catfishes. Details of its specific habitat preferences within the Mekong basin are not well documented in the available literature, consistent with its Data Deficient IUCN status.
As a Mekong Siluridae species it is presumed to favour the warm, well-oxygenated, moderately flowing water typical of the basin's main channel and tributaries, similar to other river-dwelling glass and sheatfish cats of the region. Specific pH and hardness data for this species are not available in the cache; treat any figures offered as informed estimates from the broader Mekong Siluridae rather than measurements specific to K. dissitus.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data specific to Kryptopterus dissitus are sparse. Based on the feeding ecology documented for the genus, Kryptopterus species are midwater micro-predators, hanging in open water either singly or in loose aggregations and taking small live prey — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates drifting past in the current.
Where aquarium accounts exist for the genus, glass and sheatfish cats accept small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp, and will move on to fine dry food once well settled. They are shy feeders that are easily out-competed by bolder tankmates, a pattern reasonably expected to extend to K. dissitus given its close relationship to the better-documented Kryptopterus species.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Kryptopterus dissitus. Across the genus, glass and sheatfish cats are essentially unrecorded as captive spawners: the aquarium trade in Kryptopterus species runs entirely on wild-caught fish, and there is no established account of courtship or pairing behaviour observed in the home aquarium.
In the wild, Mekong Siluridae are presumed to be river spawners like their larger relatives (Wallago, Ompok), broadcasting eggs in open water or over the substrate during seasonal high-flow periods, but this has not been specifically confirmed for K. dissitus.
Breeding
Kryptopterus dissitus is not known to have been bred in captivity. This mirrors the genus as a whole: glass and sheatfish catfishes in the aquarium trade are essentially all wild-caught, and no reliable home-aquarium spawning method exists for Kryptopterus species. Larger relatives in the family Siluridae, such as Wallago and some Ompok, are river spawners that are mostly propagated at commercial hatchery scale using hormone induction rather than bred naturally by hobbyists.
Given the complete absence of documented spawns, aquarists should not expect to breed this species, and any wild population decline cannot currently be offset by a captive-breeding safety net — a point worth weighing against continued collection pressure on Mekong stocks.
In the aquarium
Kryptopterus dissitus reaches 7 in standard length, appreciably larger than the small glass catfish species commonly sold to nano-tank keepers, so intending owners should plan for a substantial, long, well-filtered aquarium with strong water flow rather than a small community tank — the size trap that catches many Kryptopterus buyers applies here too, since juveniles are inevitably smaller and more tempting than the adult footprint demands.
As with all Siluridae it is scaleless, so it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many standard treatments; dose conservatively, ideally at reduced strength, and monitor closely during any treatment. Handle with a soft net or, better, move the fish in a container to avoid damaging its delicate, unscaled skin. Kryptopterus species are shoaling, nervous fish that do poorly alone or in small numbers — keep in a group in dim lighting with open swimming space and subdued tankmates, and expect a shy fish that fasts if bullied or out-competed at feeding time.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Kryptopterus dissitus as Data Deficient, an assessment made in 2011. This reflects a genuine lack of targeted population, distribution and threat data for the species within the Mekong basin, rather than any specific evidence of decline.
The wider Mekong basin faces well-documented pressures — damming, sediment starvation, habitat modification and heavy fishing pressure across its many endemic and near-endemic fish species — and any Mekong Siluridae relying on river-channel habitat is exposed to those pressures by default. Because the aquarium and food-fish trade both draw on wild-caught stock rather than captive-bred fish, ongoing collection adds to that baseline pressure; a fresh IUCN assessment would help clarify whether the Data Deficient rating still holds.
