Taxonomy & naming
Kryptopterus lais was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1851 as Silurus lais, based on material from the Southeast Asian mainland. Over the following century it moved through several combinations — it has been treated as Cryptopterus lais and, at times, as Kryptopterichthys lais — before settling in its current genus, Kryptopterus, within the family Siluridae, the sheatfishes. The Catalog of Fishes recognises Kryptopterus lais (Bleeker, 1851) as the valid name, with Silurus lais as the basionym.
Kryptopterus is a genus of Asian glass catfishes that includes the well-known aquarium glass catfish (often sold as K. vitreolus or under the historical label K. bicirrhis) alongside larger, more opaque "sheatfish"-type relatives such as Ompok and Wallago. Kryptopterus lais is one of the smaller, more transparent members of the genus and is frequently confused in the trade with its close relatives, since several similar-looking glass catfishes are sold interchangeably as "glass cats" without species-level labelling.
Morphology
Like other glass catfish, Kryptopterus lais has a laterally compressed, elongated body with a long-based anal fin, a very small or absent dorsal fin, and a forked tail. Its skin is scaleless and largely transparent, so the vertebral column, ribs and swim bladder are visible through the flanks, giving the fish its glassy, almost ghostly appearance; only a faint silvery-iridescent sheen and a thin outline of pigment along the back mark out the body in life.
FishBase reports a maximum size of about 5 in total length, with most individuals seen in the trade and in the wild closer to 4–4.5 in — a genuinely modest size for a catfish, though still large enough to need a properly sized shoal tank rather than a nano setup. As in all catfishes the naked skin lacks the protective scale layer of most other fish groups, which makes Kryptopterus lais more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and to poor water quality generally.
Habitat
Kryptopterus lais is native to the river systems of mainland Southeast Asia, with type material and subsequent records centred on the Mekong basin spanning Laos, Thailand and Cambodia. It is a benthopelagic species, meaning it spends its time in open water within the water column rather than sitting on the bottom, typically holding station in loose to tight shoals over slow- to moderate-flow river channels, backwaters and floodplain habitats.
FishBase characterises the species as having high resilience, with a minimum population doubling time under fifteen months, consistent with a widespread river fish that is not under severe pressure across most of its range. Specific published water-chemistry data for wild populations of K. lais are sparse, but the genus as a whole favours warm, well-oxygenated, gently flowing tropical river water.
Feeding
Kryptopterus lais is a midwater micro-predator. In the wild it hangs in loose shoals in open water and picks off small aquatic invertebrates and other tiny prey drifting past, relying on shoaling behaviour and a fast strike rather than active bottom-foraging.
In the aquarium it should be offered small live or frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia and other small crustaceans — which it takes readily; it is generally reluctant to accept dry food, especially newly imported fish, and only settles onto prepared foods gradually once established. Because it is shy and a slow, deliberate feeder compared with more boisterous community fish, it is easily out-competed at feeding time and does best fed with fast-sinking or slow-dispersing foods offered away from more aggressive tankmates.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Kryptopterus lais in the aquarium literature, and detailed field observations of its reproductive behaviour are similarly sparse. Glass catfishes in this genus are essentially never bred in captivity, and virtually all individuals in the aquarium trade are wild-caught rather than farm- or hobbyist-produced, so there is no established account of pairing, spawning site selection or triggers for this species to draw on.
Breeding
Kryptopterus lais has no established captive-breeding record. As with other small Kryptopterus glass catfishes, the trade supply is wild-collected, and there are no verified reports of the species spawning in home aquaria or being produced commercially. This stands in contrast to some other catfish families — armoured callichthyids that bubble-nest, or driftwood catfishes with internal fertilisation — where home breeding is achievable; glass catfish breeding, by comparison, remains essentially undocumented. Larger relatives in the wider Siluridae, such as Wallago and some Ompok, are river spawners that are mostly propagated on a commercial, hormone-induced basis rather than bred naturally in captivity, and nothing comparable has been reported for K. lais.
In the aquarium
Kryptopterus lais tops out at around 5 in total length, which is modest for a catfish, but it is a shoaling species that should never be kept singly or in small numbers — a group of six or more in a suitably long, well-established tank is the minimum for the fish to feel secure and display natural behaviour. It is a nervous, delicate species: sudden movements, bright lighting and poor or fluctuating water quality all cause visible stress, and newly imported individuals in particular need calm, stable conditions and dim lighting with floating cover to settle.
As a scaleless catfish it is notably medication-sensitive; copper-based treatments and many standard fish medications should be dosed conservatively, often at half the labelled rate, and ideally avoided altogether in favour of good husbandry. It lacks the heavy locking spines of larger catfish relatives, but like other siluriforms it should still be handled gently and moved in a container rather than chased with a net when possible. Because all stock is wild-caught, buyers should expect some acclimation losses and should provide immediate, careful quarantine; sourcing from a reputable, low-stress supply chain matters more for this species than for most tank-bred community fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Kryptopterus lais as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution across the Mekong basin and FishBase's characterisation of the species as having high resilience. It is not currently considered at elevated risk of extinction.
That said, because the aquarium trade in this species relies entirely on wild collection rather than captive breeding, sustained demand adds a direct pressure on wild Mekong populations that farm-bred fish would not carry, even where the overall conservation status remains favourable. Broader Mekong basin concerns — damming, sedimentation and habitat alteration across the river system — are the kind of long-term pressures relevant to river-dwelling species in this region generally.
