Taxonomy & naming
Kryptopterus macrocephalus was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1858, with the type locality cited as the Irrawaddy River drainage in Myanmar. It belongs to the family Siluridae — the sheatfishes — a predominantly Asian family of scaleless, elongate catfishes characterised by the absence of an adipose fin and a very long anal fin running most of the length of the body. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Kryptopterus macrocephalus as the valid name in Kryptopterus Bleeker, 1858.
The genus Kryptopterus holds the transparent and semi-transparent glass catfishes of South and Southeast Asia. The epithet macrocephalus is New Latin from the Greek makros (large) and kephalē (head), meaning 'large-headed' — distinguishing this species from its finer-snouted relatives by the proportionally broader head that is most apparent on juveniles and young adults.
Morphology
The body is laterally compressed and near-transparent, with the spine, swim bladder and dark ribbon of viscera visible through the skin in live fish. As in other members of Kryptopterus there is no adipose fin and the dorsal fin is represented by a single small ray; the extremely long anal fin — running almost the full length of the underside — is the principal locomotory surface and gives the fish its characteristic hovering, almost stationary posture in the water column. The tail is forked. Three pairs of barbels are present: one long maxillary pair projects forward and aids in detecting prey.
Adult size is approximately 4.5–6 in standard length (SL) per FishBase data. The skin is entirely scaleless and naked, with no bony armour. Unlike many catfishes, Kryptopterus does not possess the heavy, locking pectoral or dorsal spines that tangle in nets and can injure handlers — the spines are slender and the main care risk is the fish's extreme fragility and skin sensitivity rather than defensive weaponry.
Habitat
Kryptopterus macrocephalus is native to mainland Southeast Asia, recorded from the river drainages of Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, including the Irrawaddy, Salween and Mekong systems. It inhabits the middle and lower reaches of rivers and associated floodplain waters — slower-flowing stretches with submerged vegetation and woody debris where shoals can hang in open water away from strong current.
Water conditions in these lowland tropical rivers are warm and soft to slightly acidic or neutral. FishBase records temperatures of approximately 72–79 °F, with the soft, slightly acidic to neutral chemistry typical of Southeast Asian lowland river fish (pH broadly neutral to mildly acidic). This is not a hard, alkaline rift-lake environment: the species needs conditions resembling the warm, gently flowing lowland rivers of the Indochina mainland.
Feeding
Kryptopterus macrocephalus is a mid-water micro-predator, hanging in shoals and intercepting small aquatic invertebrates drifting in the current — insect larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton and similar prey. The long barbels help locate food in murky water and at low light levels.
In the aquarium it accepts live and frozen foods most readily: bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp and micro-crustaceans are eagerly taken. Acclimatised individuals will learn to accept fine dry foods and micro-pellets, but new arrivals are often reluctant to eat anything but live or frozen prey. It is a shy species easily outcompeted at feeding time; presenting food after lights-out or ensuring calm, uncrowded tankmates is important so it receives adequate nutrition.
Mating
Almost nothing is known of the mating behaviour of Kryptopterus macrocephalus in the wild. Glass catfishes of this genus are rarely observed spawning under natural conditions, and the conditions that trigger reproductive behaviour — seasonal flood cycles, water-chemistry shifts, or specific social cues — have not been documented for this species in the scientific literature.
In the aquarium, courtship and pairing behaviour have not been reported with any reliability. The trade supply is drawn from wild-caught fish, which indicates that captive reproductive cues are not yet understood. Distinguishing sexes is also difficult: mature females may be slightly fuller-bodied than males, but the difference is subtle and no external secondary characters have been described.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Kryptopterus macrocephalus is not established. Glass catfishes as a group are essentially unspawned in the aquarium hobby; the transparent glass catfish K. vitreolus is the best-studied member of the genus and accounts of confirmed home breeding remain vanishingly rare even for that species, let alone the more thinly recorded K. macrocephalus. The aquarium trade relies on wild collection from Southeast Asian river systems.
Keepers should be aware that purchasing fish marketed as 'bred in captivity' for this species is unlikely to be accurate. Until reliable captive-breeding methods are documented, the species must be treated as wild-caught, and sustainable sourcing from responsible traders is the appropriate consideration.
In the aquarium
Kryptopterus macrocephalus demands careful husbandry. Adult size of 4.5–6 in SL, multiplied across the minimum group of six or more fish the species needs to feel secure, means a tank of at least 47–59 in in length is required; a species advertised to beginners as a small, transparent novelty becomes a mid-sized shoaling fish that needs room to drift and turn. Under-housing is the most common husbandry failure.
The skin is entirely scaleless and naked, making this species sensitive to copper and many standard aquarium medications in the way shared by all silurid and loricariid catfishes — copper treatments and organophosphate-based medications should be used at half the normal dose at most, and ideally avoided. Because Kryptopterus lacks the heavy locking spines of many other catfishes, moving it in a net is less dangerous to the keeper than with armoured species, but the delicate skin is easily damaged; a smooth container or fine-mesh bag is preferable to a standard net. Water quality must be excellent: the species is intolerant of ammonia, nitrite or elevated nitrate, and responds to poor water by losing condition rapidly. Provide a well-planted tank with gentle current and diffuse lighting; the fish is most active from late afternoon onward.
Conservation
Kryptopterus macrocephalus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). It is a data-sparse species; published distribution records span several major Southeast Asian river systems (Irrawaddy, Salween, Mekong drainage states of Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia), suggesting a reasonably broad native range, but population-level data on abundance and trends are lacking.
The relevant pressures across its range include habitat degradation from hydroelectric development on the Mekong and Irrawaddy systems, floodplain modification, sedimentation and the trade pressure of continuous wild collection to supply the ornamental fish market. Until a formal IUCN assessment is undertaken, the precautionary position is to prefer responsibly sourced, legally collected fish and to support habitat protection efforts in mainland Southeast Asian river catchments.
