Taxonomy & naming
Kryptopterus palembangensis was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1852, with a type locality at Palembang in South Sumatra, Indonesia — the source of its species epithet. It belongs to the family Siluridae, the sheatfishes, a family that also holds the true glass catfishes (Kryptopterus), the Wallago river cats, Ompok, and the Eurasian wels catfish Silurus. The Catalog of Fishes treats Kryptopterus palembangensis as the valid combination, and it has at times been grouped closely with the more widely traded Kryptopterus bicirrhis, which it resembles.
The genus Kryptopterus comes from Greek kryptos ("hidden") and pteron ("fin"), a reference to the reduced, near-invisible dorsal fin shared by the group's glass catfishes. Within the genus, K. palembangensis is distinguished from its close relative K. bicirrhis chiefly by a prominent dark lateral stripe running along each flank, a feature that is the most reliable way to tell the two apart in the trade.
Morphology
This is a laterally compressed, elongated catfish with an almost entirely transparent body in healthy specimens — the vertebral column, ribs and internal organs are visible through the flesh, an adaptation thought to aid concealment in open water. The most obvious identifying mark is a dark stripe running along each side from head to tail, which separates it from the similar and more commonly traded Kryptopterus bicirrhis. As in other Kryptopterus, the dorsal fin is reduced to a tiny vestige or absent altogether, while the anal fin runs long and low along the body and provides most of the fish's propulsion; long, whisker-like maxillary barbels project forward from the upper jaw.
FishBase records a maximum length of 6.5 in total length, though common length in the wild is closer to 3 in standard length, and some sources describe typical adult size nearer 4–5.5 in standard length. Like all catfishes in this family the skin is naked and scaleless, which makes the species more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and to some other treatments.
Habitat
Kryptopterus palembangensis is known from the mainstem rivers and peat-adjacent waters of central and southern Sumatra, Indonesia, with records concentrated in Jambi and South Sumatra provinces near its type locality of Palembang. Sumatran lowland rivers in this region are frequently blackwater or clearwater systems draining peat swamp forest, tannin-stained and structurally complex with submerged wood and marginal vegetation, though the species is also taken from open river mainstems rather than being confined to peat swamps proper.
Reported water conditions span a fairly wide temperature range of about 68–82 °F, a pH of roughly 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water (approximately 36–268 ppm total hardness). This breadth likely reflects the fish's presence across both blackwater tributaries and larger, more mineral-rich river mainstems rather than a narrow habitat preference.
Feeding
This is a midwater micro-predator that hangs in loose aggregations in open water, picking off small invertebrates as they drift past rather than foraging over the substrate. In the wild it takes small crustaceans and other aquatic invertebrates.
In the aquarium it accepts bloodworm, tubifex, earthworms and other small live or frozen foods readily, and will take sinking pellets once it has settled in. It is a shy feeder that is easily outcompeted by bolder tankmates, so food should be offered where the shoal is holding station and competition kept to a minimum.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Kryptopterus palembangensis. Glass catfishes in this genus are not established aquarium breeders, and the handful of specimens that reach the trade are wild-caught rather than farm-raised, so there is no aquarium record of pairing, spawning site selection or courtship display to draw on.
Breeding
Breeding of Kryptopterus palembangensis has not been achieved or documented in the home aquarium, and the species should be considered essentially unbred in captivity. This is consistent with the wider genus: true glass catfishes are almost never bred by hobbyists, and the trade in Kryptopterus species relies on wild collection rather than captive propagation. Larger relatives in the family Siluridae, such as Ompok and Wallago, spawn in rivers on a much bigger scale and are mostly produced through farming rather than home breeding, but that commercial-scale approach has not been reported for this species either. Anyone acquiring this fish should assume it was collected from the wild in Sumatra.
In the aquarium
Kryptopterus palembangensis reaches roughly 6.5 in total length as an adult — appreciably larger than the small glass catfish many keepers picture — and Seriously Fish recommends a minimum tank footprint of 120 × 12 in for a properly kept shoal, so this is not a fish for a small community tank. It should always be kept in a group; glass catfishes are highly shoal-dependent, and a lone or thinly stocked individual becomes stressed, refuses food and rarely settles.
Because it is naked-skinned and scaleless, treat medications conservatively, particularly copper-based products, which this species tolerates poorly compared with scaled fish. It is shy and slow to compete for food, so tankmates should be calm, similarly sized, and not aggressive feeders. Provide gentle water movement, subdued lighting and open swimming space rather than dense cover, and expect a fish that spends its time suspended in mid-water rather than resting on the bottom. Given how rarely this species appears in the trade, most keepers are far more likely to encounter and should not confuse it with the widely sold Kryptopterus bicirrhis or Kryptopterus vitreolus.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Kryptopterus palembangensis as Least Concern. It occupies river systems across a reasonably broad area of central and southern Sumatra and does not currently show signs of population decline sufficient to warrant a higher threat category.
As with many Sumatran lowland river and peat-swamp fishes, the longer-term pressures are habitat-related — peat swamp drainage, deforestation, and river modification across Sumatra are ongoing regional concerns even where a given species is not yet classed as threatened. The aquarium trade in this species is negligible; it is extremely rarely offered for sale, so collection for the hobby is not a meaningful pressure on wild populations.
