Taxonomy & naming
Leptodoras oyakawai was described in 2008 by José L. O. Birindelli, Lucia H. Sousa and Mark H. Sabaj Pérez, part of a broader revision of the thorny catfish family Doradidae. It belongs to the genus Leptodoras, a group of slender, long-bodied doradids sometimes called "talking catfishes" for the sound their locking pectoral spines can produce, within the family Doradidae. The Catalog of Fishes treats Leptodoras oyakawai as the currently valid name, with no synonyms in general use.
The genus name Leptodoras combines the Greek leptos, "slender" or "thin", with Doras, the type genus of the family — describing the narrow, elongate body that distinguishes these fish from stockier doradids. The species epithet oyakawai honours Osvaldo Takeshi Oyakawa, the Brazilian ichthyologist, in recognition of his contributions to the study of South American freshwater fishes.
Morphology
Leptodoras oyakawai is a small doradid with the characteristic Leptodoras body plan: an elongate, laterally compressed body tapering to a slender caudal peduncle, a long conical snout covered by a membranous oral hood, and a moderately sized gas bladder with simple walls (lacking the diverticula seen in some relatives). The anteriormost vertebrae carry paired bony capsules that are reduced to small cup-like laminar ossifications, a detail used to distinguish it from close relatives. Some paratypes show a dusky, triangular black blotch at the base of the dorsal fin.
The species is known mainly from small individuals — the holotype and most paratypes measure well under 2.5 in standard length, with the largest recorded specimen reaching about 5 in SL. Like other doradids it is scaleless (naked-skinned) rather than plated with true scales, which makes it more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and should inform any treatment dosing. It also carries the stiff, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines typical of the family, which can snag a net and should prompt careful handling.
Habitat
The type locality of Leptodoras oyakawai is the rio Jamanxim, a major tributary of the rio Tapajós in Pará state, Brazil. The species is also known from the rio Teles Pires and rio Peixoto de Azevedo (both part of the Tapajós system) as well as the rio Culuene and rio Curisevo, headwater tributaries of the upper rio Xingu in Mato Grosso state — giving it a range spanning two adjacent southern Amazon basins on the Brazilian Shield.
These are clearwater to moderately turbid river systems draining ancient crystalline terrain, typical of the southern tributaries of the Amazon. Precise water chemistry data specific to this species has not been published, but doradids from this region generally inhabit soft, slightly acidic to circumneutral river water; detailed pH and hardness figures for L. oyakawai itself are not available and should not be assumed with precision.
Feeding
As in other Leptodoras and doradids generally, Leptodoras oyakawai is presumed to be a nocturnal benthic omnivore, foraging along the riverbed after dark for small invertebrates, detritus and organic material swept along the bottom. No dietary study specific to this species has been published, but its close relatives in the genus follow this pattern consistently.
In an aquarium setting this feeding strategy would translate to sinking pellets, frozen foods and other prepared foods offered after lights-out, since these fish forage mostly at night and can be out-competed by diurnal tankmates if fed only during the day. This species is not established in the trade, so this remains inference from its relatives rather than direct observation.
Mating
Nothing has been published on the courtship or spawning behaviour of Leptodoras oyakawai. The species is known only from museum survey material collected in its native rivers, and no aquarium spawning or field observation of its reproductive behaviour has been documented.
Breeding
Leptodoras oyakawai has not been bred in captivity, and there is no record of it being kept in aquaria at all — it is essentially unknown outside ichthyological collections. Larger, better-studied doradids are typically open-substrate egg-scatterers with no parental care, but this cannot be confirmed for L. oyakawai specifically, and readers should not assume this mode applies without direct evidence. Given the total absence of husbandry data, this is a species to leave to field biology rather than the home aquarium.
In the aquarium
Leptodoras oyakawai is not known to be present in the aquarium trade. It is a small species by the standards of thorny catfishes — the largest recorded specimen is only about 5 in SL — but with no husbandry record, no tank, water or diet recommendations can be responsibly given beyond what is known of the genus generally.
Any doradid, including this one, should be assumed scaleless and therefore medication-sensitive: copper-based treatments and many standard medications should be dosed conservatively, as for loaches and other naked-skinned catfishes. Doradids also carry stiff, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that catch in aquarium nets and can jab the handler, so any specimen encountered should be moved in a container rather than netted. Because this species is effectively unavailable and undocumented in the hobby, it is presented here for its taxonomy and natural history rather than as a care candidate.
Conservation
Leptodoras oyakawai has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is classified as Not Evaluated. It is known from a limited number of river systems in the upper Tapajós and upper Xingu basins of Pará and Mato Grosso states, Brazil — a region under increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion and hydroelectric development, though no population-level data exists to gauge the species' status against these threats.
As with many narrow-range Leptodoras species described from a handful of survey specimens, its conservation status is best described as data-deficient in practice even though it lacks a formal Red List category. There is no indication that this species enters the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not a known concern.
