Megalodoras uranoscopus is a heavily armoured giant doradid — the thorny catfish family — native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America. Females reach 23.5 in standard length and females weigh up to 4.6 kg; males are somewhat smaller at around 21 in. Despite that bulk the species has a reputation as a gentle giant among its tankmates, provided those tankmates are large enough not to be swallowed. It earns the common name 'mother of snails' from a pronounced fondness for aquatic gastropods and other hard-shelled invertebrates, which its strong jaws crush with ease. Like all doradids it is encased from head to tail in rows of bony lateral scutes rather than scales, it carries serrated locking spines on its pectoral and dorsal fins, and it can produce audible sounds by stridulation. This is a fish for public aquaria or very large private systems: most home tanks are simply too small.

Taxonomy & naming

Megalodoras uranoscopus was originally described as Doras uranoscopus by Rosa Smith Eigenmann and Charles Henry Eigenmann in 1888, with the Amazon Basin as its type locality. The species has accumulated several synonyms in the literature: Hoplodoras uranoscopus (also an Eigenmann combination), and Megalodoras libertatis and Megalodoras irwini, which represent earlier attempts to separate populations now considered the same taxon. The Catalog of Fishes recognises Megalodoras uranoscopus (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1888) as the valid name and places it in the family Doradidae — the thorny catfishes, or talking catfishes — within the order Siluriformes.

The genus Megalodoras holds only a small number of species. The epithet uranoscopus is from Greek (ouranos, sky or heaven; skopos, watcher or observer), a reference to the upward-turned eyes characteristic of the fish — eyes that face more toward the sky than the sides of the head, giving the appearance of a stargazer. This trait inspired the alternative common name 'stargazer catfish'.

Morphology

Megalodoras uranoscopus is a large, massively built catfish. Females reach 23.5 in standard length (SL) and can weigh up to 4.6 kg; males are slightly smaller, reaching around 21 in SL. The body is laterally compressed at the rear but broad and depressed anteriorly, with a wide, flat head and the upward-angled eyes that give the species its scientific name.

The entire flank from behind the head to the base of the tail is protected by a lateral series of bony scutes, each bearing a sharp spine or thorn — the hallmark of the Doradidae. These scutes are not scales; true scales are absent. The dorsal fin and both pectoral fins are preceded by stout, serrated, locking spines that can be locked erect by the fish as a defence mechanism. The three pairs of barbels (one maxillary, two mandibular pairs) are well developed. Colouration is typically a mottled brown-grey above, paler below, allowing the fish to blend against a sandy or rocky substrate. Like other doradids, Megalodoras uranoscopus can stridulate — grinding the pectoral spine against its socket to produce an audible grunting or croaking sound.

Habitat

This species is native to the Amazon Basin broadly — spanning Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru — and also occurs in the Orinoco drainage. It inhabits main-channel rivers, large tributaries and flooded areas, generally favouring soft substrates where it can search for food at night. It is a lowland tropical fish found in warm, typically soft-to-neutral water.

FishBase records it from freshwater habitats at temperatures of 75–82 °F and pH 6.0–7.5, consistent with the soft, slightly acidic to neutral water typical of much of Amazonia. These are not extreme blackwater conditions; the species tolerates a reasonable range of water chemistry and is found in white-water and clearwater river systems as well as softer environments.

Feeding

Megalodoras uranoscopus is an omnivore with a particular specialisation for hard-shelled invertebrates. Aquatic gastropods (snails) form a notable part of its wild diet, earning it the vivid common name 'mother of snails catfish'; fallen fruits are also recorded as a natural food item, reflecting the species' opportunism in seasonally flooded forest. Its strong jaws and crushing mouthparts are adapted for dealing with mollusc shells.

In the aquarium, larger specimens take earthworms, cockles, mussels, prawns and crab or crayfish meat. Quality sinking pellets, vegetables and live or frozen molluscs round out a suitable diet. Because Megalodoras is a nocturnal forager it is most active after the lights go out, and food should be offered at that time to ensure it actually feeds rather than waiting out its tankmates.

Mating

The reproductive behaviour of Megalodoras uranoscopus in the wild is not well documented in the published literature. Large doradids in general are known to undertake seasonal breeding migrations linked to the flood pulse of Amazonian rivers, with spawning occurring during or after the onset of the rainy season. Specific details of courtship or mate choice in this species are not confirmed in the available sources.

Based on general doradid biology, spawning likely occurs in open or sheltered water with the female scattering eggs; the bony scutes and spines make prolonged physical contact more awkward than in unarmoured catfishes. Without confirmed breeding records for this species, these details should be regarded as inferred from family-level patterns rather than established fact.

Breeding

Megalodoras uranoscopus has not been bred in home aquaria, and captive breeding of this species is not documented in the hobby literature. At 23.5 in SL and several kilograms in weight, it is a fish whose sheer size effectively precludes most private-aquarium breeding attempts. Keeping even a single adult in suitable conditions is a significant undertaking; maintaining a compatible pair or group in a space large enough to trigger spawning behaviour is essentially beyond a domestic setting.

Commercial aquaculture of this species, if it occurs, would likely require hormone induction and large pond systems, in the manner used for other large Amazonian catfishes. The aquarium trade relies on wild-collected juveniles, which are exported from range countries and grow quickly under captive conditions — often faster than their keepers anticipated when they purchased a small specimen.

In the aquarium

Megalodoras uranoscopus is sold routinely as a small, appealing juvenile — but it grows to 23.5 in SL and several kilograms, and most home aquaria cannot house it as an adult. The minimum recommended aquarium footprint is 94.5 in × 47 in, and even that is a compromise for a fish of this size. Anyone considering this species should plan for the adult size before purchasing a juvenile.

Despite its bulk the species is considered a relatively gentle community fish: according to Seriously Fish it can be housed with fish that are at least 25% of its own body length, so companions must be genuinely large. It is best kept in groups where space permits. The substrate should be soft sand — a fish encased in bony scutes and designed to forage on the bottom can damage itself on coarse or sharp gravel. Powerful filtration is essential; this is a large, messy eater that produces significant nitrogenous waste, and two or more canister filters are typically recommended. Lighting should be dim or diffused, with hiding places and caves provided, as the fish is nocturnal.

Two care points are non-negotiable. First, the skin is scaleless (the lateral armour is bone, not scale), making the fish sensitive to copper-based medications and some other treatments — always dose conservatively and use catfish-safe formulations. Second, the serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines tangle readily in a net and can inflict painful puncture wounds on the keeper; this fish must always be moved in a container, never netted. Water temperature should be maintained at 75–82 °F and pH at 6.0–7.5.

A diet rich in molluscs, earthworms, prawns and high-quality sinking pellets suits this species well; food should be offered after dark.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Megalodoras uranoscopus as Least Concern in 2023 (updated from a 2020 assessment), citing the species' wide distribution across five countries in the Amazon and Orinoco basins and the absence of evidence of a major decline. The IUCN notes medium resilience and moderate to high vulnerability to fishing pressure, indicating that sustained heavy exploitation could affect local populations even if the species is not currently at risk globally.

Like most large Amazonian catfishes, this species is subject to artisanal and subsistence fishing across its range, and the export of wild juveniles for the aquarium trade adds to that pressure. The Amazon and Orinoco basins face ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, hydroelectric development and artisanal mining, all of which degrade water quality and alter the flood dynamics that large migratory catfishes depend on. At present the species' range is broad enough to absorb these pressures without a threatened listing, but continued monitoring is appropriate.
