Taxonomy & naming
Mystus bimaculatus was described by Volz in 1904 under the original combination Macrones bimaculatus, from the Salween River drainage of Southeast Asia. The genus Macrones — an older name applied to a large sweep of Asian bagrid catfishes — was progressively synonymised and the species transferred to Mystus, the current valid genus under which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats M. bimaculatus today.
Mystus belongs to the family Bagridae, a diverse lineage of freshwater catfishes distributed across Africa and Asia; the Southeast Asian members include Mystus, Hemibagrus and Bagrichthys, among others. Within Mystus, M. bimaculatus represents the larger, more piscivorous end of the genus — several congeners are small and peaceful, which can mislead a buyer who picks the species based on genus alone. The species epithet bimaculatus is Latin for 'two-spotted', referring to markings used in the original description.
Morphology
Mystus bimaculatus has the characteristic bagrid form: a broad, flattened head with a wide gape, a robust and laterally compressed body, and three pairs of barbels — one long maxillary pair reaching well back along the body and two shorter mandibular pairs beneath the lower jaw. The dorsal and pectoral fins are armed with stiff, serrated, lockable spines. The tail is forked. Coloration is generally a warm brownish-grey, often with darker mottling or spots along the flank.
Adult standard length in aquarium literature and FishBase records is in the range of 10.5–12 in; field specimens may exceed this. The skin is entirely scaleless — there are no bony plates or modified scale rows — which confers the medication sensitivity discussed in the care section. Juveniles sold in the trade are typically 2–3 in and give no visual warning of their eventual adult proportions.
Habitat
Mystus bimaculatus is a Southeast Asian river fish, native to the Salween (Thanlwin) River drainage as the type locality, and recorded from rivers of Myanmar (Burma), Thailand and Malaysia. It inhabits slow to moderate-current freshwater channels, larger streams and river backwaters with soft or muddy substrates.
Water conditions across its native range are warm tropical, with temperatures typically 72–82 °F, pH ranging from slightly acidic to near-neutral (approximately 6.0–7.5), and soft to moderate hardness. This is not a rift-lake or alkaline-water fish; it comes from the soft, warm river systems of mainland Southeast Asia and the northern Malay Peninsula.
Feeding
Mystus bimaculatus is a carnivore and active nocturnal predator. In its native rivers it feeds on smaller fish, shrimp and other aquatic invertebrates, taking whatever prey it can engulf whole. The wide gape characteristic of larger Mystus means it can swallow prey considerably larger than it appears capable of from the outside.
In the aquarium it will take large meaty foods — whole or chopped fish flesh, prawns and shrimp, earthworms, and large meaty sinking pellets. Feeding is best done after lights-out when the fish is naturally active. Any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth is potential prey; this must be accounted for in stocking decisions.
Mating
Relatively little detailed information exists in the aquarium literature about the mating behaviour of Mystus bimaculatus specifically. Like other large bagrids, the species is sexually dimorphic at maturity — ripe females become noticeably deeper-bodied and rounder than males when carrying eggs — but this dimorphism is not obvious in juveniles or non-breeding adults.
Mating in large bagrids of this type is understood to require specific environmental triggers (seasonal temperature fluctuation, rising water levels and altered photoperiod mimicking the monsoon season), which are difficult to replicate in home aquaria. No confirmed accounts of spontaneous spawning in home conditions have been documented in the literature reviewed for this profile.
Breeding
Mystus bimaculatus is not bred in home aquaria in any documented, repeatable way. Breeding of large bagrid catfishes of this size class occurs at commercial scale in Southeast Asian fish farms and typically requires hormone injection (induced spawning via gonadotropin analogues) to trigger egg release and fertilisation. The resulting fry are reared in ponds.
The combination of adult size — specimens grow to 10.5–12 in and require large volumes of water — and the need for hormonally induced spawning places this species firmly outside the reach of home breeding. Aquarium stock is farm-produced. Keepers should not expect spontaneous spawning.
In the aquarium
Mystus bimaculatus is not suitable for the typical home aquarium — a blunt statement worth making clearly. At 10.5–12 in standard length as an adult, it requires a tank of at least 80–105 US gal, and the setup must account for its nocturnal piscivory and territorial nature. Any fish or invertebrate small enough to fit in its mouth will be eaten; tankmates must be large, robust species that cannot be swallowed. Dither fish of similar or larger size may coexist, but mixing with smaller species is a stocking error.
The fish is scaleless (naked-skinned) and therefore more sensitive to copper-based medications and many other chemical treatments than scaled fish. When treating disease, use half the standard recommended dose as a starting point and monitor closely. Several common parasiticides at full label dose can be fatal to scaleless catfishes. The locking pectoral and dorsal spines are a practical hazard: do not net this fish — move it in a container. The spines can lock erect, pierce the mesh, and puncture the keeper's hand.
Provide large pieces of driftwood, overhanging rockwork or ceramic cave pipes for daytime shelter; M. bimaculatus is strongly nocturnal and hides during daylight. Water should be soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5) and warm (72–82 °F). Filtration must be robust given the fish's size and high bioload. This is a specimen fish for a dedicated, experienced keeper with an appropriately large system.
Conservation
Mystus bimaculatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is common among the many tropical catfish species from Southeast Asia for which population data are limited and range boundaries are incompletely mapped.
The species is produced commercially on fish farms in Southeast Asia and is available in the aquarium trade; the proportion of wild-caught versus farmed individuals in the trade is unclear but commercial production reduces direct collection pressure. Longer-term threats to wild populations in the Salween, Mekong and related river systems include dam construction, habitat alteration, water quality changes from agricultural run-off and intensive fishing pressure — pressures that affect the broad freshwater fish fauna of the region.
