Taxonomy & naming
Mystus mysticetus was described by Tyson Roberts in 1992, placing it directly in the genus Mystus within the family Bagridae — the Asian bagrid catfishes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Mystus mysticetus Roberts, 1992 as the valid combination; no prior genus assignment is recorded.
Bagridae is a large and taxonomically complex family distributed across Asia and Africa. Mystus itself is a South and Southeast Asian genus of medium to large-bodied river catfishes, and the group has seen significant revision over the decades as molecular and morphological work has split off genera such as Hemibagrus, Sperata and Bagrichthys from older, broader interpretations of Mystus. Roberts's 1992 revision of regional bagrid taxonomy placed M. mysticetus within the residual Mystus assemblage.
The species epithet mysticetus derives from Greek mystax (moustache) and cetus (whale or large sea creature), sometimes loosely interpreted as referring to conspicuous barbels — a naming convention with precedent in the genus.
Morphology
Mystus mysticetus is a robust, streamlined catfish with the characteristic bagrid body plan: a broad, slightly flattened head, a stout body tapering to a forked caudal fin, and three pairs of barbels — one long maxillary pair reaching well past the gill cover and two shorter mandibular pairs. The dorsal fin is tall and bears a stiff, serrated, locking spine; the pectoral fins carry equally robust locking spines that can lock erect when the fish is threatened.
Adult body length has been estimated at 10–14 in standard length based on the genus profile, placing this species firmly among the larger members of Mystus. The skin is entirely scaleless (naked), with no protective scale cover — a characteristic of bagrids shared with loaches, puffers and eels that has direct consequences for medication sensitivity. Colouration in live specimens is not well documented in English sources; most Mystus species show a brownish to grey-olive ground colour, sometimes with faint lateral banding or spotting.
Habitat
Mystus mysticetus was described from the Chao Phraya river drainage of Thailand, and its range likely extends through connected lowland river systems of the Malay Peninsula and neighbouring mainland Southeast Asia. The Chao Phraya system drains the central lowlands of Thailand into the Gulf of Thailand and supports a diverse fish fauna across warm, moderately productive rivers and their floodplains.
As a lowland riverine species, it inhabits warm freshwater, tolerating a range typical of tropical Southeast Asian rivers: temperatures broadly in the 75–82 °F range, near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and moderate water hardness. It likely favours deeper pools and undercut banks with structural cover during the day, emerging at night to forage. Some Mystus species move into slightly brackish water near river mouths; whether M. mysticetus does so is not documented in available sources.
Feeding
Mystus mysticetus is a piscivorous predator. Like other large Mystus, it forages nocturnally and takes any fish or invertebrate it can fit into its mouth — smaller fish, crustaceans and other aquatic animals encountered along the bottom and in midwater. This is not an omnivore or detritivore but an active, size-limited predator.
In the aquarium it will accept large meaty foods: chunked fish or prawn, large sinking pellets, and whole feeder invertebrates. Feeding is best done after lights-out when the fish is naturally active. Any tankmate small enough to be swallowed is at genuine risk; co-inhabitants must be chosen to exceed the fish's maximum gape by a comfortable margin.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour in Mystus mysticetus has not been documented in English aquarium or scientific literature. Based on the biology of closely related large Asian bagrids, spawning almost certainly requires hormonal induction and is not triggered by ordinary aquarium conditioning. The species reaches a size and scale that precludes most home-aquarium breeding attempts in any case.
Sexual dimorphism, if present, is not described for this species; in related Mystus, ripe females are typically fuller-bodied, but distinguishing the sexes without size and condition context is difficult.
Breeding
Mystus mysticetus is not bred in home aquaria. Like other large bagrid catfishes — and like the big pimelodids and pangasiids of similar adult size — commercial propagation of Mystus species depends on hormone-induced spawning carried out at fish farms. Adult fish are injected with pituitary extract or synthetic gonadotropins to trigger gamete release, and hatching is managed under controlled conditions at scale.
The adult size of this species (10–14 in SL) is itself the primary barrier to home breeding: the fish outgrows most domestic tanks before reaching sexual maturity, and the hormonal induction requirement means even facilities with space rarely succeed without veterinary-grade inputs. Stock in the trade, when available, originates from commercial farms in Southeast Asia.
In the aquarium
Mystus mysticetus is a fish for dedicated large-predator specialists, not for community tanks. Its adult size of 10–14 in standard length demands a tank of at minimum 80–105 US gal, and larger is better — a fish of this bulk needs unobstructed swimming space and strong filtration to handle the bioload of a sizeable piscivore. The keeper must plan for this adult size from the outset: juveniles are sold at a fraction of their final length, and the size trap is real.
The scaleless skin of all Mystus species means copper-based medications and many organophosphate treatments must be used at no more than half the standard dose; at full dose they can kill the fish. Avoid exposed copper fittings in the plumbing. When moving the fish, always use a smooth-sided container rather than a net — the locking, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines tangle in mesh and can deliver a painful jab to the handler's hand.
This species is nocturnal; provide substantial cover (large driftwood, overhangs, cave structures) for daytime retreat. Water conditions should reflect its Southeast Asian river origin: 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness. Tankmates must be large enough that they cannot be swallowed — robust, similarly sized fish only. This is not a community animal.
Conservation
Mystus mysticetus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Many Bagridae, particularly mid-sized species with restricted or poorly documented ranges, lack formal conservation assessments despite being potentially vulnerable to habitat modification.
The Chao Phraya drainage, the type locality, has experienced significant modification through irrigation, dam construction, water extraction and urbanisation over the past half-century; similar pressures affect connected river systems of the Malay Peninsula. The extent to which wild populations of M. mysticetus are affected by these changes is undocumented. Where trade specimens occur, they most likely originate from commercial farms rather than wild collection, which limits direct harvest pressure but does nothing to address habitat integrity in the native range.
