Taxonomy & naming
Mystacoleucus argenteus was described by Francis Day in 1888, the parenthetical authority marking a subsequent move out of the original genus in which Day placed it. The species is a member of the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Cyprininae, and the genus Mystacoleucus encompasses a group of medium barbs native to the rivers of the Indo-Burmese region.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Mystacoleucus argenteus (Day, 1888). Older literature and trade sources may list the species under Barbus or Puntius, genus names formerly used as broad receptacles for Asian and African barbs before systematic revision. The species epithet argenteus is Latin for "silvery", a reference to the reflective flanks characteristic of many open-water cyprinids.
Morphology
Mystacoleucus argenteus is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed barb reaching approximately 6 in in standard length, making it larger than the great majority of barbs encountered in the aquarium trade. The body is typical of a rheophilic, schooling cyprinid: streamlined through the midsection, with a somewhat pointed snout and a strongly forked tail suited to fast-water locomotion.
The flanks are bright silvery, giving the species its name, and the dorsal surface is dusky olive to grey. Fin coloration is unremarkable — clear to faintly yellowish. Detailed meristic data and colour descriptions from life remain limited in the published literature.
Habitat
The species is native to the Salween (Salwin) River drainage in Myanmar and Thailand, one of the longest free-flowing rivers in Southeast Asia, draining from the Tibetan Plateau through the Shan hills and into the Andaman Sea. Within this system Mystacoleucus argenteus inhabits clear, well-oxygenated running water — headwater streams and the main river channels — over substrates of sand, gravel and cobble.
Water conditions in the Salween system are typically cool to warm depending on altitude and season, moderately soft to moderately hard, and broadly neutral in pH. Seriously Fish records a recommended aquarium range of 68–81 °F and pH 6.0–7.5, with hardness of approximately 36–268 ppm, which reflects the Salween's varied geology from upper granitic headwaters to lower alluvial reaches.
Feeding
Mystacoleucus argenteus is an omnivore. In the wild it is presumed to take the range of food items typical of free-living barbs in fast-flowing Asian rivers: aquatic invertebrates including insect larvae, crustaceans and worms, along with filamentous algae, aquatic plant matter and organic detritus drifted or swept into the current.
In the aquarium it accepts live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp alongside plant-based dried foods and good-quality pellets or flake. The species feeds vigorously and can outcompete slower or more timid tankmates at mealtimes; robust, active companions are therefore preferable.
Mating
Like all members of its family, Mystacoleucus argenteus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No detailed account of courtship in the wild has been published, but the pattern shared by barbs generally involves a dominant male driving a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, with eggs and milt released in brief, close-contact bursts.
There is no nest construction and no pair bond maintained beyond the spawning act itself. Adults consume their own eggs given the opportunity, and no territory is defended. In large river barbs of this size class, seasonal triggers — rising water temperature, increased flow, or rainfall — likely initiate breeding migrations over gravel bars or into shallow spawning areas.
Breeding
Breeding of Mystacoleucus argenteus in the aquarium has not been recorded in the hobby literature. Given its size and the generally uncontrolled conditions of typical community tanks, deliberate spawning would require a large, dedicated set-up with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water in the lower part of its temperature range, fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops over a protective substrate layer, and a well-conditioned group.
By analogy with other medium Asian barbs, eggs would be adhesive and scattered among plants or onto the substrate, with the adults removed immediately after spawning to prevent predation. Fry would initially require fine infusoria before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Until an aquarium breeding account is published, details remain speculative.
In the aquarium
Mystacoleucus argenteus is an uncommon fish in the hobby, appearing sporadically through specialist importers rather than the mainstream trade. Its size — up to 6 in — means it is not a fish for small or medium community aquaria; a spacious, well-filtered tank with good water movement and open swimming volume is required to meet its needs as an active, fast-water schooling species.
It should be kept in groups of at least six, which provides social cohesion and reduces individual stress. Robust co-inhabitants of similar scale — other large cyprinids and loaches that share the Salween drainage or comparable fast-water systems — make more appropriate companions than slow or timid fish. The species' vigorous feeding behaviour means it can dominate quieter tankmates. Water should be maintained in the cool-to-warm tropical range (68–81 °F), soft to moderately hard, and close to neutral pH, with regular partial water changes and good mechanical filtration to replicate the clean, oxygenated conditions of its native river habitat.
Conservation
Mystacoleucus argenteus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List based on its distribution across the Salween River system, one of the longer and comparatively less-impacted major rivers of mainland Southeast Asia. The Salween has so far avoided the large-scale damming that has fragmented many other Mekong and Irrawaddy tributaries, helping preserve habitat connectivity for riverine species.
Longer-term threats include proposed hydropower development on the Salween mainstream and tributaries, sedimentation from upland agricultural expansion, and artisanal fishing pressure. The species' distribution is largely confined to Myanmar and Thailand, and given the limited freshwater research output from the Salween basin, population trends and total range remain imperfectly known. Continued monitoring of the basin's hydrology and ichthyofauna is warranted.
