Pangasius humeralis is a large, scaleless shark catfish endemic to the Kapuas River basin of western Borneo, one of the many Pangasiidae that Southeast Asian rivers hide in their turbid, fast-flowing channels. It reaches roughly 15.5 in in standard length — modest by the standards of its giant relatives, but still a fish that will outgrow any home aquarium and belongs in a large pond or public display, not a glass box. Like the rest of its genus it is a torpedo-bodied, deep-river predator/scavenger with a forked tail and long, sweeping barbels, and it is essentially never bred outside commercial hatcheries.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangasius humeralis was described by the American ichthyologist Tyson R. Roberts in 1989. It belongs to the family Pangasiidae, the shark catfishes, a group of large, silvery, freshwater and brackish-water catfishes distributed across South and Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Pangasius humeralis as a valid species within the genus Pangasius, and no other combination is in current use for it.

The genus Pangasius derives from a local Javanese/Sundanese vernacular name for these catfishes; the specific epithet humeralis is Latin, referring to the shoulder or shoulder region (humerus), likely describing a mark or feature near the pectoral girdle used to distinguish it from congeners. PlanetCatfish places it in the informal subgenus grouping sometimes called "Neopangasius" within Pangasius. The genus contains species spanning an enormous size range, from smaller Bornean endemics like this one to giants such as P. pangasius and P. hypophthalmus, which exceed 47 in.

Morphology

Pangasius humeralis has the classic shark-catfish silhouette: a streamlined, laterally compressed, silvery body, a deeply forked caudal fin, a tall triangular dorsal fin with a stiff leading spine, and long paired barbels on the upper jaw used to feel out food in murky water. The skin is naked and scaleless, as in all catfishes, which makes it more sensitive to certain medications than scaled fish.

Maximum recorded size is about 15.5 in standard length (FishBase), making it one of the smaller members of its genus — still a substantial fish, but far short of the giant Pangasius species that dominate the aquaculture trade. Like several of its relatives it has a facultative air-breathing capability, letting it tolerate the low-oxygen conditions of warm, sediment-laden tropical rivers. Sexes are not reported to differ externally in any documented way.

Habitat

This species is endemic to the Kapuas River basin of western Borneo (Kalimantan, Indonesia), the type locality being the Kapuas River itself. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish, occupying the water column over the bottom of the main river channel and its larger tributaries rather than still backwaters.

Detailed water chemistry data for the wild population is not documented in the available sources; as a lowland Southeast Asian river species it is presumed to experience warm tropical temperatures and turbid, sediment-rich water typical of the Kapuas system, though exact pH and hardness figures are data sparse for this specific species.

Feeding

Detailed dietary data specific to Pangasius humeralis is data sparse, but the genus Pangasius as a whole is broadly omnivorous with a voracious appetite, scavenging and foraging over the riverbed for a mix of plant material, detritus, invertebrates and small fish. Commercially farmed relatives in this genus are raised on formulated feeds and readily take a wide range of foods.

Where it is kept in large ponds or public aquaria, Pangasius accepts live, frozen and commercial foods and forages actively along the bottom; its size and appetite mean feeding volume scales up quickly as the fish grows.

Mating

There is no documented account of natural courtship or spawning behaviour for Pangasius humeralis in the wild or in captivity. As with other members of this genus, reproduction at any commercial or research scale relies on artificial hormone induction rather than fish selecting mates and spawning spontaneously, so little is known about natural pair formation in this species.

Breeding

Pangasius humeralis is not bred in the home aquarium. Large Pangasiidae are farm- or hormone-bred at commercial scale — broodstock are injected with spawning hormones and stripped, with fry raised in hatchery ponds — a technique developed for food-fish species in the genus such as P. hypophthalmus (the "iridescent shark" of the aquarium trade) and P. bocourti. There is no record of this species being spawned by hobbyists, and given its adult size and specialised hormone-induction requirements it is not a realistic aquarium-breeding candidate; any aquarium stock ultimately traces back to wild collection or commercial hatchery production of the wider genus.

In the aquarium

Pangasius humeralis is not a suitable aquarium fish for the vast majority of keepers. Even at the smaller end of its genus, an adult reaching close to 15.5 in standard length needs a correspondingly enormous footprint — realistically a large pond or public-aquarium-scale tank, not a home setup. Juveniles are sometimes sold in the trade under generic "Pangasius" or "shark catfish" labels without species-level identification, and buyers should assume any small juvenile Pangasius will need a home far larger than a typical tank can offer; this is the classic size-trap catfish.

Like all catfish it is scaleless, so medications — particularly copper-based treatments — should be dosed conservatively. It carries a stiff, locking dorsal spine typical of the family, which can snag in a net; large Pangasius are best moved in a container rather than netted. As an active, fast-swimming river fish it also needs strong water flow and high dissolved oxygen; its facultative air-breathing ability helps it cope with warm, oxygen-poor conditions but does not substitute for good filtration and flow in captivity.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Pangasius humeralis as Data Deficient, reflecting how little population or trend data exists for this Bornean endemic. As a species restricted to the Kapuas basin, it is potentially exposed to the same pressures affecting Bornean rivers generally — deforestation-driven sedimentation, water pollution, damming and fishing pressure — but no species-specific assessment of these threats has been published.

Because it is endemic to a single river system rather than widespread across Southeast Asia like some of its farmed relatives, its long-term status would benefit from targeted survey work; until then its conservation status remains genuinely unknown rather than reassuring.
