Taxonomy & naming
Pangasius djambal was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1846. It belongs to the family Pangasiidae, the shark catfishes of South and South-East Asia — a group that includes the well-known Iridescent shark (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) and the giant Mekong giant catfish (Pangasianodon gigas). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Pangasius djambal as the valid combination, with Bleeker as authority.
The genus Pangasius was established to accommodate these large, elongated Asian catfishes and has undergone revisions; several former Pangasius species have been transferred to Pangasianodon or Helicophagus following anatomical studies. Pangasius djambal remains in its original genus. The specific epithet djambal is a local vernacular name used in the Mekong region.
Morphology
Pangasius djambal has the streamlined, laterally compressed build typical of the family: a broad, slightly flattened head bearing short maxillary barbels and smaller mandibular barbels, a strongly forked tail, and a high dorsal fin with a stiff leading spine. The body is silvery to grey-brown, paler on the underside, and becomes darker with age.
This species is entirely scaleless — the skin is naked, with no protective armour — which is a critical care point (see "In the aquarium"). The pectoral and dorsal fins carry stiff, locking spines that can tangle in a net and inflict a painful jab; handling should always be done in a container, never a net. Adults recorded in the literature reach at least 39.5 in standard length, with some accounts suggesting larger individuals; juveniles in the trade are typically only a few centimetres long, giving no visual warning of the adult proportions.
Habitat
The native range of Pangasius djambal centres on the Mekong basin — one of the world's great river systems, draining parts of China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam — and also includes the Chao Phraya drainage in Thailand. These are large, warm, lowland freshwater rivers with gently flowing to moderately fast currents, turbid water and complex inundated flood-plains during seasonal high water.
Water conditions in the Mekong lowlands are warm throughout the year (typically around 75–82 °F), neutral to slightly alkaline, and of moderate to low hardness. This is not a soft, acidic blackwater species; it occupies productive lowland river habitat and is tolerant of the variable conditions that characterise large tropical drainage systems.
Feeding
Pangasius djambal is a piscivore and opportunistic large predator. In the wild it preys on fish and large invertebrates including crustaceans, foraging actively at night. Its gape grows proportionally with the body, and as an adult it can consume prey of considerable size.
In captivity young fish accept commercial pellets, prawn, fresh or frozen fish, and other meaty foods. Keepers must understand from the outset that any fish or invertebrate the djambal can fit in its mouth will be eaten — tankmates must be substantially larger than the catfish's gape at all times, and this bar rises constantly as the fish grows. It is a predator, not a community fish.
Mating
In the wild, Pangasius djambal undertakes seasonal upstream migrations tied to spawning, a pattern common to the large Pangasiidae of the Mekong. Spawning is thought to occur in the main river channel during the wet-season flood pulse, when rising water and temperature cues trigger reproductive activity. Males and females aggregate at these times, but the details of courtship and mate selection in wild fish remain poorly documented.
In commercial aquaculture, sex identification relies on the larger, rounder abdomen of gravid females near spawning time. Pairing or group spawning under hormonal induction is the standard approach at hatcheries across South-East Asia. There is no observed pair bond or territory defence; this is a broadcast-style spawner driven by seasonal environmental cues.
Breeding
Pangasius djambal is not bred in the home aquarium. Like others of the large Pangasiidae, it reproduces in commercial hatcheries exclusively through hormone-induced spawning: females are injected with pituitary extract or synthetic GnRH analogues to trigger ovulation, eggs are stripped and fertilised artificially, and the larvae are reared in large earthen ponds or flow-through tanks. The same technique underpins South-East Asian aquaculture of the Iridescent shark and related species.
The reasons home breeding is not feasible are straightforward: the fish attain breeding size at 39.5 in or more, requiring pond-scale space; they need seasonal conditioning and environmental spawning cues associated with tropical monsoon river systems; and the egg quantities involved are industrial, not hobbyist, in scale. Aquarists should treat this as a species to observe rather than breed.
In the aquarium
Pangasius djambal is sold as a small juvenile and is a common victim of the size trap that affects the whole genus: it looks manageable at 2–4 in in a shop tank and grows rapidly to 31.5–47 in or beyond, a size that demands a tank measured in thousands of litres or, more honestly, a public aquarium or a large outdoor pond in a suitable climate. The vast majority of private aquaria cannot house an adult. Keepers who acquire one should have a plan for the fish's adult needs before purchase.
Because the skin is naked and entirely scaleless, Pangasius djambal is significantly more sensitive to copper-based medications and many common fish treatments than scaled species. Half-dose or quarter-dose treatment protocols are advised, and salt and copper should be avoided unless there is no alternative. Treat this species with the same caution you would apply to loaches, puffers or freshwater eels. Water temperature of 75–82 °F suits the fish well; aim for neutral to slightly alkaline pH matching its Mekong origins.
The locking pectoral and dorsal spines make netting extremely hazardous — the fish will thrash, embed the spines in the mesh, and injure itself and the handler. Always move it in a smooth-walled container. A nocturnal species by habit, it benefits from a dark, sheltered resting area, though it will use the full tank once settled. Given its predatory nature and eventual size, tankmates from the outset must be large enough to be impossible prey.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pangasius djambal as Near Threatened in 2011, reflecting genuine concern about its wild populations despite its commercial familiarity. The primary threats identified are overfishing — it is a large, valuable food fish actively targeted in commercial and subsistence fisheries across the Mekong — and the progressive alteration of the river system by dam construction. Dams on the Mekong mainstream and tributaries impede the upstream spawning migrations the species depends on and alter the seasonal flood pulse that cues reproduction and provides nursery habitat in inundated flood-plains.
The species is extensively farmed across South-East Asia, and aquaculture production is substantial; however, commercial production does not reduce pressure on wild fish, which are separately targeted for human consumption and for the ornamental trade as juveniles. Continued monitoring of wild populations, particularly in the face of accelerating Mekong dam development, remains a conservation priority.
