Taxonomy & naming
Pangasius elongatus was described in 2002 by Laurent Pouyaud, Renny Gustiano and Guy Teugels, part of a wave of taxonomic work that clarified the long-confused Pangasius shark catfishes of Southeast Asia. It belongs to the family Pangasiidae within the order Siluriformes, and the Catalog of Fishes treats it as a valid species in the genus Pangasius.
The genus name Pangasius derives from a regional Southeast Asian vernacular name for these river catfishes, while the species epithet elongatus is Latin for "elongated", describing its comparatively slender body form relative to other Pangasius. Pangasiidae as a group has been heavily revised over the decades, with species historically lumped or confused under broader names before modern morphological and molecular work — including the 2002 description that named this species — separated them out; P. elongatus has no older synonym in wide use and should not be confused with the far better-known iridescent shark (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), a related but distinct genus.
Morphology
Pangasius elongatus is a streamlined, laterally compressed shark catfish reaching about 11 in standard length, with a predorsal length of roughly 30–34% SL and a notably long caudal peduncle (about 17.6–21.4% SL) that gives the body its "elongated" look and namesake. Like all Pangasiidae it is scaleless, with smooth naked skin rather than bony plating, and carries the family's typical stiff, serrated dorsal and pectoral spines, which can lock erect.
The body is silvery, countershaded pale below and darker above, with a forked tail and the sharklike dorsal profile that gives the group its common name. Barbels are present around the mouth, used for probing the substrate. Data on this specific species' fin-ray counts and colour pattern beyond the FishBase morphometrics above are sparse, as it is one of the lesser-studied members of a genus dominated in the literature by its larger, commercially important relatives.
Habitat
This species is native to the lower reaches of the Chao Phraya, Bangpakong and Mekong river basins across Indochina and Southeast Asia, occupying freshwater and brackish stretches typical of large tropical lowland rivers. It is described as benthopelagic, meaning it moves between the riverbed and open water rather than staying strictly bottom-bound.
Water in these lower-basin reaches is warm, tropical, and often turbid, with a seasonal flood pulse that shapes both habitat and diet. Precise pH and hardness figures specific to P. elongatus were not found in the sources reviewed; treat any aquarium water parameters as inferred from the general lower Mekong/Chao Phraya system rather than a documented range for this exact species.
Feeding
Pangasius elongatus is omnivorous, feeding mainly on benthic molluscs and crustaceans picked from the river bottom. During the rainy season, when the floodplain inundates and fruiting trees and vegetation are within reach, its diet shifts to include fallen fruit and organic debris — a seasonal flexibility typical of large Mekong-basin river fish that track the flood pulse.
In captivity, Pangasius species generally accept sinking pellets, frozen foods and vegetable matter without difficulty; they are not fussy feeders. Any keeper taking one on should offer a varied diet reflecting this natural omnivory, but should also recognise that a fish this size needs proportionally large meals and a filtration system to match its waste output.
Mating
Specific spawning behaviour for Pangasius elongatus has not been documented in the sources reviewed here, but the genus as a whole is well characterised: Pangasiidae are migratory spawners, moving upriver within the Mekong and Chao Phraya systems to spawn during the late spring and summer flood pulse, broadcasting large numbers of eggs into open water with no nest and no parental involvement.
Commercially farmed Pangasius species are induced to spawn using hormone injections, because they do not reliably spawn on their own in captivity — a workaround for a migratory-trigger reproductive strategy that pond and tank conditions cannot replicate. There is no reason to expect P. elongatus differs from this pattern, though data specific to the species is sparse.
Breeding
Pangasius elongatus is not bred in the home aquarium, and for the same reasons as its commercially farmed relatives: it is a large, migratory river fish whose spawning is cued by natural flood and flow conditions that no aquarium can reproduce. Where Pangasiidae are propagated at all, it is on a commercial farm scale using hormone-induced spawning, primarily for food-fish species rather than this one.
There is no record of P. elongatus being deliberately bred by hobbyists, and given the size and migratory biology of the genus, that is expected to remain the case. Anyone encountering "bred" Pangasius in the trade should assume farm-raised food-fish stock, not a home-aquarium spawn.
In the aquarium
Pangasius elongatus reaches roughly 11 in SL — modest by Pangasius standards, where some relatives exceed a metre, but still a genuinely large, active river fish that is unsuitable for the vast majority of home aquariums. It is frequently the case with this genus that small, appealing juveniles are sold without adequate size warnings; buyers should assume this species needs a very large, long system with strong filtration and swimming room, not a standard community tank, and should not purchase on the strength of juvenile size alone.
Because it is scaleless, it is medication-sensitive in the same way as other naked-skinned catfish — copper-based treatments and many standard medications should be dosed conservatively, often at reduced strength. It carries serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that can snag a net and jab the handler, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted. Pangasius are also known as nervous, easily startled fish prone to glass-impact injuries in tanks that feel too small or too brightly lit, which reinforces that this is not a beginner or small-tank species. Tankmates must be robust, similarly large river fish; anything small enough to be swallowed is at risk.
Conservation
Pangasius elongatus has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is currently listed as Not Evaluated. This is common for lesser-known Pangasiidae described relatively recently (2002) and overshadowed in both fisheries data and conservation attention by economically dominant relatives such as the iridescent shark and striped catfish.
It inhabits the lower Chao Phraya, Bangpakong and Mekong basins, river systems under sustained pressure from damming, sediment change, overfishing and habitat modification across Indochina. Without a formal assessment its population trend is undocumented, but the general pressures facing lower-Mekong and Chao Phraya fish communities are relevant context for its long-term status.
