Pangasius kinabatanganensis is a little-known shark catfish endemic to the Kinabatangan River basin of Sabah, in Malaysian Borneo — a scaleless, streamlined pangasiid described in 1991 and still classified as Data Deficient. Like its more famous farmed relatives, it belongs to a genus that grows well beyond what most home aquariums can accommodate, and any specimen that turns up in the trade as a small juvenile should be treated as a fish that outgrows an ordinary tank rather than a permanent community resident.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangasius kinabatanganensis was described by Tyson Roberts and Chavalit Vidthayanon in 1991, part of their revision of the shark catfish family Pangasiidae. It sits in the subgenus NeoPangasius within Pangasius, a placement based on the arrangement of palatal teeth in a single large patch and an elevated vertebral count relative to other Pangasius. The Catalog of Fishes recognises Pangasius kinabatanganensis as the valid name, with no history of placement in an older genus such as Pimelodus or Bagrus — it was described directly into Pangasius.

The species epithet kinabatanganensis is a straightforward geographic name, referring to the Kinabatangan River in Sabah, northeastern Borneo, which is both the type locality and, so far as is documented, the species' entire known range. This makes it one of Borneo's local pangasiid endemics rather than a wide-ranging Mekong or Chao Phraya species like its well-known farmed cousins.

Morphology

Pangasius kinabatanganensis shows the classic pangasiid "shark catfish" silhouette: a compressed, torpedo-shaped body, a forked tail, a tall triangular dorsal fin set well forward, and long paired barbels on the upper jaw. FishBase records a maximum size of 9.5 in SL (standard length) for this species — modest by the standards of the genus, but that figure is what is currently documented, not a guarantee of the species' full potential; several Pangasius described from limited material have later proven to grow larger once more specimens are examined.

As in every member of the genus, the skin is completely scaleless, covered instead by a mucous layer, which matters directly for aquarium medication. The dorsal and pectoral fins carry a stout, serrated spine that can be locked rigidly erect — a genuine hazard when handling the fish, since it snags in nets and can jab the skin.

Habitat

The species is known from the Kinabatangan River basin in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo — a lowland tropical river system draining into the Sulu Sea, characterised by warm, well-oxygenated, benthopelagic water typical of large Southeast Asian rivers. It is a freshwater species that, like other Pangasius, likely moves through the main channel and larger tributaries rather than staying in still backwaters.

Detailed water chemistry data for the Kinabatangan population has not been published in the sources available here, so specific pH and hardness figures should be treated as data sparse; what is documented is a warm tropical lowland-river regime consistent with the rest of the genus.

Feeding

Pangasius as a genus are omnivorous and opportunistic, with a voracious wild appetite that spans crustaceans, other fish, and plant matter. Pangasius kinabatanganensis has not been the subject of a dedicated dietary study, but its close relatives and its shared body plan point to the same generalist, predatory habit: as it grows, anything it can fit in its mouth — smaller fish and invertebrates — is fair game, alongside plant material.

In practice this makes it a large predator rather than a delicate community fish. Any tankmates must be too large for it to swallow, and its feeding regime in captivity, where it exists at all, would need to account for a fish that eats meaty foods (fish, prawn, large pellets) in quantity as it matures.

Mating

No wild courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Pangasius kinabatanganensis specifically. Across the genus, Pangasius species that are propagated for food production are induced to spawn using hormone injections under controlled hatchery conditions rather than spawning naturally on demand — natural courtship in the wild is tied to seasonal river-flow and flood cues that are difficult to replicate outside their native basin, and for this narrow-range species those cues have not been described in the literature.

Breeding

This is a large, commercially oriented catfish genus, and Pangasius kinabatanganensis follows that pattern: there is no record of it being bred in home aquaria. Where Pangasius species are propagated at all, it is at hatchery scale for food production, using hormone-induced spawning of mature broodstock — a world away from anything achievable in a home fish room. Given its Data Deficient status and narrow endemic range, there is no aquaculture programme specifically targeting this species either; it should be considered essentially unbred in captivity, full stop.

In the aquarium

Pangasius kinabatanganensis is not a realistic long-term aquarium fish, and this needs to be said plainly: even at its documented maximum of 9.5 in SL it is already too large for the great majority of home tanks, and Pangasius as a genus is notorious for being sold as an appealing small juvenile that quickly outgrows anything short of a very large aquarium or pond. Anyone offered this species, or any unlabelled small "Pangasius" or "iridescent shark" juvenile, should assume it needs vastly more space than a standard setup provides.

Because it is completely scaleless, it is medication-sensitive in the same way as loaches, puffers, and true eels — copper-based treatments and many standard medications should be dosed conservatively, often at half the labelled rate. It also carries a stout, serrated, lockable pectoral spine that snags nets and can injure the keeper's hands; move it in a container rather than netting it. As a large, likely nocturnal predator, it needs tankmates too big to be eaten and should not be kept in anything resembling a mixed community of small fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Pangasius kinabatanganensis as Data Deficient (2022.2). It is known only from the Kinabatangan River basin in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo — a single-river endemic, which is inherently a precarious position regardless of formal listing, since any degradation to that one system affects the entire known population.

The Kinabatangan basin faces well-documented pressures from oil palm plantation expansion, riverbank clearance, and sedimentation, all of which affect its aquatic fauna broadly; without dedicated population surveys for this species, though, its specific conservation trajectory remains unassessed. The Data Deficient rating reflects a genuine lack of data rather than evidence of stability, and further fieldwork in the basin would be needed to resolve it.
