Taxonomy & naming
Pangasius myanmar was described by Tyson R. Roberts and Chavalit Vidthayanon in 1991, in a revision of the shark catfish family Pangasiidae published in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. It belongs to the genus Pangasius, one of several genera of Asian shark catfishes that also includes the well-known iridescent shark, which sits in the separate genus Pangasianodon. The Catalog of Fishes treats Pangasius myanmar as a valid species within the family Pangasiidae.
The genus name Pangasius derives from a local Southeast Asian vernacular name for these river catfishes, while the species epithet myanmar refers directly to the country of Myanmar (Burma), reflecting the type locality in the Irrawaddy-to-Salween river systems. As with many Pangasiidae, older literature and some databases may still group species of this genus loosely with other large Asian catfish genera; the Catalog of Fishes' current placement in Pangasius is followed here.
Morphology
Pangasius myanmar has the classic pangasiid shark-catfish silhouette: a streamlined, laterally compressed body, a forked tail, a tall pointed dorsal fin with a stout leading spine, and long paired barbels used to feel out food on the riverbed. The skin is entirely scaleless, like other members of the family, which leaves it more exposed to injury and infection than a scaled fish and has direct consequences for how it must be medicated.
Maximum recorded size is about 39.5 in standard length (FishBase), placing it among the larger Pangasius species and firmly in size-trap territory for anyone considering it as a pet. Juveniles offered in the trade are a small fraction of this adult length, and — as with the iridescent shark — buyers can easily be misled into thinking the fish will stay small. The dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff, serrated, locking spines typical of catfishes generally, which can snag in a net and jab the handler if the fish is not moved carefully.
Habitat
The species is native to the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) and Salween (Thanlwin) river systems and the area around Yangon (Rangoon) in Myanmar, where it inhabits large tropical rivers as a benthopelagic fish — spending time both near the bottom and in open water. Like several of its relatives it is a facultative air-breather, able to gulp atmospheric oxygen when dissolved oxygen in its river habitat runs low, an adaptation useful in the warm, sometimes turbid, slow sections of large Southeast Asian rivers.
Detailed habitat data for this specific species are sparse. It is presumed to share the general Pangasiidae preference for warm, well-oxygenated to moderately oxygen-poor river water, migrating along river channels as many large Asian catfishes do, though the specifics of its seasonal movements have not been well documented.
Feeding
Pangasius myanmar has a reported trophic level around 2.8, consistent with an omnivorous to moderately predatory diet typical of the genus — invertebrates, smaller fish, plant matter and organic debris taken opportunistically from the riverbed and water column. As it grows, larger individuals of Pangasius species generally shift toward taking a greater proportion of animal prey, including other fish.
In any captive setting large enough to hold an adult, this species would need to be treated as a substantial predator: it should be offered large meaty foods (fish, prawn, and large sinking pellets) and housed only with tankmates too large to be swallowed. Detailed captive feeding data specific to Pangasius myanmar are not available, so care recommendations follow the pattern well documented in related farmed Pangasiidae.
Mating
No detailed account of the natural mating behaviour of Pangasius myanmar has been documented; FishBase and other sources note that reproduction data for the species are limited. Related large Pangasiidae, including farmed species in the genus, are understood to undertake spawning migrations in the wild, moving upriver to reach appropriate spawning grounds during the rainy season, but this has not been specifically confirmed for P. myanmar.
Given the extreme adult size and river-migratory biology typical of the family, natural courtship and spawning are not something a home aquarist would ever witness — this is a species whose reproduction, where it has been studied at all in the genus, is understood mainly through fisheries and aquaculture research on its relatives rather than aquarium observation.
Breeding
Pangasius myanmar is not bred in home aquaria, and there is no realistic prospect that it ever would be. Large Pangasiidae are propagated commercially by hormone-induced spawning on fish farms — the same approach used for the iridescent shark and other large farmed pangasiids — where broodstock kept in huge ponds are injected with spawning hormones and stripped, with eggs and milt combined artificially. This requires infrastructure, broodstock the size of adult humans, and controlled hormone dosing that has no place in a hobbyist setting.
Even where P. myanmar itself is not a major aquaculture species, the pattern across its genus is consistent: home breeding is not documented and is not feasible given the fish's eventual size and migratory reproductive biology. Anyone encountering young Pangasius myanmar in the trade should assume breeding is off the table entirely and plan only for the animal's long-term housing, not propagation.
In the aquarium
Pangasius myanmar is not a realistic aquarium fish for the vast majority of keepers. With an adult size around 39.5 in SL, it needs the kind of space only a large pond, public aquarium, or exceptional dedicated system can provide — no standard home tank comes close. Juveniles are occasionally seen in the trade looking like a modest, active schooling catfish, which is precisely the trap: the fish does not stay that size, and rehoming a fully grown individual is extremely difficult.
Anyone who does encounter this species should keep its scaleless skin firmly in mind: like other naked-skinned catfishes it is more sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard treatments than scaled fish, so dosing should be conservative and ideally reduced. Its dorsal and pectoral spines lock rigid and are serrated, so it should always be moved in a container rather than netted, both to protect the fish and to avoid a painful jab to the keeper. As a facultative air-breather it benefits from access to the surface and well-oxygenated water. Given the size and specialist requirements involved, this species is best appreciated in its native rivers or in large public aquarium displays rather than purchased as a pet.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List currently lists Pangasius myanmar as Data Deficient, meaning there is not enough information on its population size, trend, or the pressures it faces to assign a threat category. This is a common status for lesser-known large river catfishes of Myanmar, where systematic population monitoring is limited compared with the heavily studied Mekong pangasiids.
Large Pangasiidae as a group face pressure from river damming, habitat alteration, and both artisanal and commercial fishing across Southeast Asia, and species restricted to Myanmar's Irrawaddy and Salween systems are additionally exposed to the environmental changes affecting those rivers. Without a full assessment it is not possible to say how Pangasius myanmar specifically is faring, underscoring the need for more targeted survey work in its native range.
