Taxonomy & naming
Pangasius sabahensis was described in 2003 by Renny Gustiano, Guy Teugels and Laurent Pouyaud, part of a wave of Pangasiidae revisions from that research group in the early 2000s that split apart several previously lumped or overlooked shark catfishes across Southeast Asia. The type locality is the Kinabatangan River in Sabah State, on Malaysian Borneo, and the species epithet sabahensis simply means "of Sabah", naming the region it was described from.
It belongs to the family Pangasiidae, the shark catfishes, and to the genus Pangasius, which also contains the well-known iridescent shark (P. hypophthalmus) and the giant Mekong catfish (P. gigas). The Catalog of Fishes treats Pangasius sabahensis as a valid, currently accepted name, and it remains a poorly studied, geographically restricted member of the genus rather than a widely distributed or commercially prominent one.
Morphology
Like other Pangasius, P. sabahensis has the classic shark-catfish silhouette: a streamlined, laterally compressed body, a forked tail, a tall triangular dorsal fin with a stiff leading spine, and a long-based anal fin used for sustained cruising through open water. The mouth carries two pairs of barbels and the eyes sit low and forward on a broad head suited to a mid-water, schooling lifestyle.
The skin is naked and scaleless, as in all Pangasiidae — a detail that matters directly for aquarium medication (see "In the aquarium"). FishBase records a maximum size of 13.5 in standard length for the species, which converts to a total length well beyond that once the tail is included; as with its larger relatives, this is not a small fish, and a healthy specimen only grows from there.
Habitat
Pangasius sabahensis is endemic to the Kinabatangan River system in Sabah, on the Malaysian portion of the island of Borneo, and is not confirmed from any other drainage. It is a benthopelagic river fish of tropical freshwater, and unusually for the genus it is also recorded from estuarine reaches, tolerating brackish conditions where the Kinabatangan meets the sea — one of only a handful of Pangasius species known to move into salt-influenced water.
The Kinabatangan is a large, sediment-laden lowland river draining rainforest and, increasingly, oil-palm landscape in eastern Sabah, and P. sabahensis lives in its main channel and lower, tidally influenced reaches alongside the rest of Borneo's freshwater fish fauna.
Feeding
Pangasius sabahensis is a large-bodied predator and opportunist, in keeping with the genus: it will take any fish or invertebrate prey small enough to swallow whole, foraging through open water and along the riverbed of its home system.
In commercial and pond culture, Pangasius species readily accept large meaty foods — fish, prawn, and formulated pellets — and grow quickly on them; there is no reason to expect P. sabahensis to differ. Its size and appetite mean any tankmate that fits in its mouth is at risk, a point that carries straight through into aquarium keeping.
Mating
Wild reproduction in P. sabahensis itself has not been documented in detail, but the genus Pangasius follows a well-established pattern seen across its commercially important relatives: seasonal spawning tied to the onset of the rains, typically between June and September, when rising river levels and warm water (around 79–88 °F) trigger reproductive activity. Courtship and natural pairing in open river habitat are not something aquarists observe or replicate.
Commercially farmed Pangasius do not spawn reliably on their own in captivity; broodstock are instead brought into condition and induced to spawn using pituitary hormone injections, a technique developed for food-fish species in the genus and assumed to apply similarly here given the shared reproductive biology of Pangasiidae.
Breeding
This is a farm- and hormone-bred fish at commercial scale, not a home-aquarium breeding project. Across Pangasius generally, induced spawning with pituitary hormone is standard practice, egg output is enormous — females of related species can produce up to roughly 80,000 eggs per kilogram of body weight — and fry are raised at high density (60–80 fish per square metre) in pond and hatchery systems, reaching 800–1,100 g within six to eight months on a rich diet.
There is no realistic pathway to breeding Pangasius sabahensis in a home aquarium: the fish outgrows any tank long before maturity, spawning depends on hormone induction rather than natural pairing, and no aquarium spawning of this species (or close relatives) has been documented. Anyone encountering this fish in the trade should assume it is, at best, a juvenile pulled from commercial or wild stock rather than a captive-bred aquarium fish.
In the aquarium
Pangasius sabahensis is a textbook size-trap fish and is not a realistic aquarium species. It is sold, when it appears at all, as an attractive small juvenile a few centimetres long, but the wild maximum recorded is 13.5 in SL — and related, better-studied Pangasius reach well over a metre in nature, with premature deaths in home tanks being the usual outcome for hobbyists who did not plan for that growth. No standard home aquarium can house an adult of this genus; it needs pond- or public-aquarium-scale volume, strong filtration, and open swimming space it will never get in a glass box.
Two further care points follow directly from its biology. The skin is naked and scaleless, so — as with loaches, puffers and eels — it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper and many medications; treatments should be dosed conservatively, often at half the labelled rate. It also carries a stiff, locking dorsal spine typical of the family, which can snag in a net and jab the handler, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted. As a large nocturnal predator it is best not mixed with anything small enough to be swallowed, and it is a nervous, easily startled fish that wants generous open space rather than a cluttered decor scheme. In short: an interesting river fish to know about, not one to buy on impulse.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List currently lists Pangasius sabahensis as Data Deficient, reflecting how little targeted survey work exists for this narrow-range endemic. It is known only from the Kinabatangan River system in Sabah, a catchment under real and growing pressure from oil-palm conversion, sedimentation and water-quality decline, but there is not yet a formal population assessment tying those pressures to a specific extinction-risk category for this species.
As with several other single-river Southeast Asian catfishes, the honest summary is that P. sabahensis is too poorly studied to say more than that it is restricted to a river system facing significant land-use pressure, and that a proper status assessment is overdue.
