Pangasius silasi is a shark catfish described in 2017 from the Krishna River system in Telangana, India, where it is known from the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam area. It reaches at least 16 in SL as an adult — squarely in the size range that makes Pangasius a trap for aquarists who buy an inch-long juvenile without reading the fine print, because this fish, like its larger relatives, quickly outgrows anything but the biggest home aquarium or a pond. Naked-skinned and facultatively air-breathing, it belongs to a genus that is farmed at commercial scale for food rather than bred by hobbyists.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangasius silasi was formally described in 2017 by Dwivedi, Gupta, Singh, Mohindra, Chandra, Easawarn, Jena and Lal, based on specimens from the Krishna River system in Telangana, India. It belongs to the family Pangasiidae, the shark catfishes, a group of large-bodied Asian river catfish that includes the well-known iridescent shark (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) and the giant Mekong catfish.

The species is distinguished from the similar and more widespread Pangasius pangasius by dental and skeletal characters: its vomero-palatine teeth form a single confluent, uninterrupted curved band, whereas P. pangasius has two separate lunate tooth patches with a gap between them, and P. silasi has 48 vertebrae versus 44 in P. pangasius. The epithet honours Eric Godwin Silas (1928-2018), the Sri Lankan-born Indian ichthyologist who made major contributions to the study of South Asian freshwater and marine fishes.

Morphology

Pangasius silasi has the classic shark-catfish silhouette shared by its relatives: a streamlined, laterally compressed body, a forked tail, a tall pointed dorsal fin with a stiff locking spine, and paired barbels on the upper and lower jaw used to feel out food on the riverbed. Like all catfish in this family it is scaleless, with smooth naked skin rather than the bony plating seen in some other catfish groups.

Maximum recorded size is 16 in SL (standard length) — already a substantial fish, and one that should be assumed to grow larger still given how poorly studied the species is. The stiff dorsal and pectoral spines lock in place and can jab a hand reaching into a net or bag, a trait shared across nearly all catfish in this size class.

Habitat

The species is known from the Krishna River system in Telangana, India, with records centred on the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam area. It is a freshwater, demersal (bottom-associated) fish of tropical rivers and reservoirs, and like many pangasiids it is a facultative air-breather, able to gulp atmospheric air to supplement gill respiration when dissolved oxygen in slow, warm, silt-laden river water runs low.

Detailed water-chemistry data for the species has not been published. As a large-river fish of peninsular India it should be expected to tolerate warm, moderately hard, near-neutral water typical of the Krishna basin, but specific pH and hardness figures are not available from current sources — treat any precise range as an estimate rather than a documented fact.

Feeding

Pangasius species in general are omnivorous with a voracious appetite, taking smaller fish, invertebrates, and plant matter in the wild, and readily accepting live, frozen and prepared foods in captivity. Nothing species-specific has been published on the diet of P. silasi, but its close relatives are unselective bottom-and-midwater foragers that will eat anything they can fit in their mouths.

In practice this means any tankmate small enough to swallow is at risk — a large Pangasius is a predator by default, not by exception, and feeding plans for this species need to assume it will eat live fish and invertebrates opportunistically alongside pellets and meaty frozen foods.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Pangasius silasi specifically. Across the genus, wild spawning in large pangasiids is tied to seasonal river conditions — typically triggered by rising water levels and monsoon flooding — and commercial production instead relies on hormone-induced spawning of hatchery broodstock rather than natural pairing in captivity.

Breeding

This is a large, commercially significant catfish genus, and species of this size are farm- or hormone-bred at aquaculture scale rather than bred by hobbyists. Pangasiids in food-fish culture are typically induced to spawn with hormone injections under controlled hatchery conditions; there is no home-aquarium breeding pathway for a fish that reaches 40+ cm and needs specialised broodstock handling to reproduce.

No aquarium spawning of Pangasius silasi has been reported, and given its size and biology none should be expected. Anyone encountering breeding claims for this species in the trade should treat them with scepticism — the realistic picture is wild or hatchery-produced fish, not home-bred stock.

In the aquarium

Pangasius silasi is not a realistic long-term aquarium fish for the vast majority of keepers. At a confirmed 16 in SL — and quite possibly larger, since the species is newly described and poorly studied — it falls squarely into the Pangasius size trap: juveniles sold small and cheap grow rapidly into fish that need a six-foot-plus tank, a pond, or a public aquarium, and that outcompete or eat anything smaller sharing the water. Anyone buying a young Pangasius silasi should have a concrete plan for housing an adult before doing so, not after.

Because it is scaleless, it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and should be dosed conservatively if treatment is needed. Its dorsal and pectoral spines lock rigid and can injure hands or tangle in a net, so it is safer to move with a container than to net directly. As a facultative air-breather it benefits from access to the surface and well-oxygenated water is still important. It is a predator: any tankmate small enough to be swallowed should be assumed to eventually become food.

Conservation

Pangasius silasi has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, and no dedicated population assessment appears to exist. Its known range is limited to the Krishna River system, including the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam area, in Telangana, India, which makes it vulnerable in principle to the same pressures affecting other Krishna basin fishes: damming and altered river flow, water abstraction, pollution and fishing pressure. Given how recently the species was described (2017), current knowledge of its distribution and status is likely incomplete, and further survey work would be needed before its conservation status can be meaningfully assessed.
